The festivities started out on Thursday. Getting into the Las Vegas Hilton with time to spare to make some bets on the Thursday night games (No pushing the "needing special assistance" out of the way like last year) I plunked down some starter bets on the Houston Cougars and under on San Diego/Oakland. Pete and Woz came in during the games having already gotten some action on Houston and Va Tech. All the bets cashed in and we got the weekend off to a profitable start.
Ellis arrived in a spiffy rental scooter Another great GO JUMBO weekend!!

The Week 9 picks went down in flames A bad weekend of football for the Doofus. Michigan State started out the weekend on a sour note getting run out of Lincoln NE with a 24-3 loss stapled to their butts. The Man Cave Whiskey Swilling Cigar Chomping Football Society didn't have a particularly good week either as MSU, Purdue, Ohio State, USC, UConn, Wake and Rutgers all lost. GT, Auburn, Northwestern, FSU and UNC chalked up wins to keep the weekend from being a total bummer. Army played a Div 1AA so they didn't count (c'mon Dwink - man up - you shouldn't be playing 1AA this late in the year) The Mega Bets were absolutely terrible to going a perfect 0-4. Every pick started out like crap only to rally. Tough to lay tons of points and start out down 2 touchdowns. Week 9 Recap: Arkansas -10.0 @ Vanderbilt - Vandy got up 21-7 late in the first half. Arkansas came back to win 31-28. Vandy missed a chip shot FG at the buzzer which would have sent the game into overtime. LOSS Baltimore -14.0 vs Arizona - Arizona got up 24-3 late in the second quarter. Baltimore rallied to win 30-27 LOSS New York G Men -10.5 vs Miami - Miami got up 14-3 midway through the second quarter. Giants rallied to win 20-17 LOSS New Orleans -14.0 @ St Louis -. St Louis ran out to a 24-0 lead late into the third quarter. This time there was no rally - just a plain old 31-21 LOSS But all was not lost - as I was in the stands cheering GT on to a 31-17 win over previously unbeaten Clemson. Bobby Dodd stadium was electric as they won another night game over a ranked opponent. I was rooting against Clemson despite the MinMega on the TIgers (better known as a diversification bet) - and I was really coming on strong as the Bees held on late to preserve the under - run that ball!! The Michigan State Miracle!! MSU went with the Hail Mary play called Rocket to pull out a miracle. Maybe the best ending for an MSU game ever. Right up there with the last second win over Michigan (thanks Spartan Bob) back in 2001. And if you can't get enough of the play here it is Rocket Man Johnny E called the next day to congratulate the Doofus. He's looking forward to a rematch in Indy in the inaugural Big Ten Championship game. Same here. Get by the Huskers this week and our ticket is all but punched. The Big Book of Guesses had an OK week going 39-35-1 including a great 10-2 on the over/unders (of course the only two I missed were the ones on the parlay - that's what kind of week it was) But apparently I used up all my luck on the Rocket play as the Mega Bets went 1-4 as: Week 8 Mega Bets Recap: West Virginia -14.0 @ Syracuse: The last time I was in the Carrier Dome - A pathetic Syracuse squad upset a 12 point favorite Louisville team. Should have known better than to bet against the Orange on a Friday night in the dome. Syracuse's defense put constant pressure on WVU's QB Geno Smith and the Orange running game pounded away. WVU tried to make a game of it getting a TD midway through the 2nd quarter. But Syracuse took the kick off return to the house and the rout was on. Final score Big Orange 49 Moonshiners 23 LOSS Arkansas -15.5 @ Mississippi - Tough to cover 15.5 when you get down 17 points. With Arkansas sleep walking - Ole Miss got out ahead 17-0 with 6 minutes left in the first half. Arkansas then awoke scoring 29 straight points. Looking like I might get my cover after all - Ole Miss went on a 5 minute drive to close the score to 29-24 with 1:23 left to seal the cover. To rub it in - Ole Miss recovered the onside kick but threw a game killing pick with 0:32 left. With the loss, the Rebs set a new record for SEC futility by losing 10 straight conference games. Final Hawgs 29 Lil Miss 24 LOSS Mooo--oom!! Sparty is playing too hard!! Great win for the Green and Bronze! And all the Wolvies can do is complain we played too rough. Waaaa Waaaa Waaa! After 4 straight years - the Paul Bunyon trophy has enough credits to graduate from State. A few more years and he will be there as long as some of my kids. The Big Book of Guesses was not so hot going a fairly random 33-37-3. But - it's not how you pick 'em - it's how you bet 'em. And the Doofus had a great week too going 3-1 as: Week 4 Recap: Alabama -25.0 @ Mississippi: That's the way you blow out a team. Ole Miss scored on their opening drive but that was all. Bama then spent the rest of the game stuffing the Rebs (holding them to 137 yds of total offense) while piling on 52 points. A beautiful beat down. Final Bama 52 Ole Missing offense 7 WIN Clemson -8.0 @ Maryland - Clemson HC Dabo Sweeney was not about to get Mike Stoopsed and get the axe after blowing a Mega Bet. Trailing 38-24 late in the 3rd quarter to a mediocre Maryland team - the Tigers went on a tear. Clemson reeled off 32 points in a little over 15 minutes to beat the Terps. With 3:35 left they got their final TD and a a nice front door cover. Final Clemson 56 Cool flags 45. WIN Western Michigan -1.0 @ Northern Illinois - Went to the well one too many times with Western. Should have stopped when I was ahead - especially on the road. In blustery conditions the Huskies kept to the ground - pounding out 494 yds on the Broncos. Western led 15-13 at the half but collapsed in the second half - letting up 38 straight points. Final NIU 51 Where's Waldo Stadium 22 LOSS Green Bay -15.0 vs St Louis - Another nice beat down. Green Bay, in their hideous retro uniforms jumped to a 24-0 lead then coasted in the second half. The defense held the inept Rams offense to one late 2nd quarter FG. Final Green Bay 24 Lambs 3 WIN A real face plant by the Doofus last week Ooof - that was ugly. The Big Book of Guesses went 30-42-1. The Mega Bets were just as bad going 1-3 as: Week 6 Recap: Western Michigan -10.5 vs Bowling Green - Western continues to perform for the Doofus! The Broncos rolled for 278 yards in B slapping the Falcons. BGSU tied it at 14 all midway though the second quarter. But it was all Brown and Gold after that. The Broncos reeled off 31 straight points in the beat down winning 45-24. WIN Arizona -2.0 @ Oregon State - A tough loss. ASU spotted OSU a 27-6 lead but climbed back to trail 30-27. But, with 5 minutes left the Beav put the final dagger in the heart of the Bum Devils with a TD - to go up 37-27. With their backs to the wall at home - OSU fought hard to win. A lesson I was to learn again on Sunday. To top it off, Arizona fired HC Mike Stoops this week. Apparently, the Wildcat brain trust respects a good Mega Bet and was furious for Stoops not coming through for the Doofus. You other head coaches better be listening! LOSS Texas A&M -8.5 @ Texas Tech - This game was typical for the week for the Doofus. A&M was trading TD's for TTU FGs and built a 15 point lead early in the 4th quarter. WIth 2:55 left and the score now 45-33 (TT got a FG that bounced off the upright and went through - ugh), A&M punted to the TTU 9 yd line. Playing against a soft defense, the Red Panty Raiders drove 91 yds for a TD to get the cover 45-40 with 31 seconds left. Good thing the Doofus was alone in the Man Cave - the profanities were curling the hair on the dog. In fact, I'm still pissing and moaning about that one. Crap! LOSS The Spartans were having great success with the Waterboy Blitz package What a great weekend for Football! Michigan State was fantastic in shutting out OSU for 59:50. The nations's number 1 defense held the BuckNuts to 35 rushing yards and 178 yards in total. And consider this: Ohio State gained more than half of those yards on its last two drives, the first one ending in a fumble after 33 yards, and the second, a 62-yard touchdown drive with 10 seconds left against MSU's soft prevent defense. On the day, the Buckeyes had five three-and-outs, four negative yardage drives and four more drives that went for under 10 yards. Bubba's spirit was roaming the sidelines Saturday. MSU's offense, however, left too many points on the field as Kirk Cousin fumbled at the OSU 37, threw a pick in the OSU end zone and another pick at the OSU 20. The Spartans also missed a FG. That will need some fixing before they face Wisconsin and Michigan. And what a come back by the Lions!! Down 27-3 early in the 3rd quarter, Tony Romo throws not one but two straight pick sixes. The Unknown Picker was right in calling out Romo. With the score now 27-17 Stafford and CJ got to work. Cowboy DC Rob Ryan had channeled his brother Rex Ryan by going all motor mouth on CJ - saying he would be no better than the Cowboys' third wide receiver. CJ made him pay by nabbing five catches for 58 yards and two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to pull out the win 34-30. Nice. Still - that is the second straight 20+ comeback in as many weeks. You can only go to that well so many times. The Lions are still struggling at the line of scrimmage. Next up is Chicago and a good DL. It will be Monday Night Football in Motown!! The fans will be rocking. Should be a great game! Sorry - those Week 5 picks really stunk Not a good week as the BBofG went 29-40-0 including a snake bit 2-7 on games decided by 1 point or less. The Big Flippy finally awoke getting off to a modest 2-2 start going with UAB (Win) LSU (Win) St. Louis (Loss) Atlanta (Loss). Randomness rules at an expected 50% clip. The Sax Man went 2-1 with Oregon (Win) Buffalo (Nice win - NE was up 21-0 but Buffalo came back to win 34-31 on a walk off FG) and Atlanta (Loss) bringing his season record to 6-4. In a strange finish - Toledo made a FG as time expired to tie the game. Syracuse went on to win in OT. But after the game the Big East issued a statement that a Syracuse extra point with 2:07 left was not good and the "replay official erred in not overturning the ruling." Bad Call Had the extra point been ruled correctly Toledo would have won 30-29 in regulation. Toledo is now asking the Big East to have Syracuse vacate the win. Good Luck with that Rocket fans. An update on Minnesota HC Jerry Kill - he checked himself into the Mayo Clinic on Sunday after having another seizure that morning. It is unclear whether he will be on the sidelines in the Big Ten opener against Michigan. Let's hope they get his condition under control. Meanwhile the Gophers continue to tank losing to 1AA North Dakota St 37-24 to drop to 1-3. Speaking of 1AA upsets - a week after UNLV beats Hawaii in a Mega Bet upset, UNLV loses to 1AA Southern Utah - sigh. I was right - UNLV is bad -they just get fired up when the Doofus picks against them. Well, I'm ready for you Rebs - there'll be more mega bets coming after you! My apologies for last week - I was working and got the picks and analyses out late. And a bigger apology for the picks themselves. They reflected the lack of preparation. Work is just going to have to know that there has to be time allowed for the Big Book of Guesses. Week 3 Recap: Michigan State +5.0 @ Notre Dame - OK, I promise not to take MSU as a Mega Bet again. I just plain jinxed them. And what was with the play calling? Did Inspector Gadget become the new Offensive Coordinator? MSU actually out gained the Irish 358 yds to 275 - but stats are for losers. The Spartans turned the ball over 3 times inside the ND red zone (fake FG - really?, interception and late game incomplete 4th down pass) while also giving up an 89 yd kickoff return. ND's defensive line destroyed a beat up Spartan offensive line winning 31-13 Loss Hawaii -20.0 @ UNLV - Easily the worst pick of the season (so far that is). Hawaii fumbled the ball away 4 times including three straight times to start the second half in a miserable performance. The Warriors have reverted to old form of playing terrible on the mainland. The passing game needs to get untracked soon or its going to be a long season on the islands. Don't let the score fool you - UNLV is still a bad team but Hawaii was simply pathetic last week losing 40-20 as 20 point favorites LOSS Detroit -7.5 vs Kansas City - Detroit kept the Mega Bets from being a total wash out for the week as the Lions totally dismantled the hapless Chiefs 48-3. It was the largest margin of victory ever for the Lions during the regular season - surpassing its 44-0 beat down of the expansion Jaguars in 1995. The Chiefs have been outscored by 79 points in its first 2 games - the most ever for a returning division champion. Stafford threw for 4 TDs including 2 to Calvin Johnson while Kansas City turned the ball over 6 times. A few more games like this and the Chiefs can start making tee times for December. WIN The Irish were not feeling too lucky last week Lot of good games last week. ND and Michigan decided to go defense free at the end of their games with 3 touchdowns being scored in the last 1:12 of the game. MSU held FAU to one first down for the entire game in a 44-0 romp. Bama's defense forced three PSU turnovers as they cruised to a 27-3 late fourth quarter lead. At one point in the third quarter, Bama nearly intercepted 5 straight Lion passes. Penn State scored a TD with 2 minutes left finally losing 27-11. In a wild game Friday night, Missouri came from 14 points down in the 4th quarter to tie it, only to miss the winning FG with 12 seconds left. Arizona won it with a TD in OT to win 37-30. A scary moment in the Minnesota - New Mexico State game. As Minny was going down for a tying TD with 25 seconds left - HC Jerry Kill had a seizure and was taken to the hospital. He returned to practice on Thursday and is apparently doing OK. The most controversial game as far as Vegas was concerned was USC and Utah. Utah went to kick a tying FG on the last play of regulation when USC blocked the kick and scored a TD. But the refs called an unsportsman like penalty negating the TD - leaving the score at 17-14. Since the spread at kickoff was 7.5 - Ute backers started cashing their tickets. A full 2 1/2 hours later the Pac 12 ruled that the penalty was a dead ball foul and therefore the TD was good. Why they decided to overrule the refs on the field had everyone wondering as it had no effect on the outcome (USC won either way) other than to make the final score 23-14. Now Vegas was in a pickle as USC covered the spread. Some casinos ignored the ruling and still paid Utah tickets. Most started paying only USC tickets, screwing Utah backers who waited too long to cash in while Stations casino paid for both sides. Trust me when I say that the Strip is really pissed off at the Pac-12 and rules wil be established to handle these kind of situations. I'll tell you what - it's the traditions, the color and pageantry that makes college football so much fun. I had a chance to go to the Auburn / Utah State game. Before the game, on the JumboTron, HC Gene Chizek was talking to Aubie the Tiger. He ends his lecture by saying "I have one more thing for you to do" and hands him the National Championship trophy. The picture then jumps to the tunnel under the Jumbotron and there is Aubie holding the trophy. Aubie runs out onto the field and the place goes absolutely nuts! I don't care who you root for - that was cool! Auburn played an exciting game scoring 2 TDs in the last three minutes to win. After the game we went to Toomers Corner to celebrate. A great day of college football. The Big Book of Guesses has a great weekend to going 24-16. But the Sons of Doofus were hoisting him on his own petard with "It's not how you pick 'em Dad - it's how you bet 'em" True enough - the Doofus got the 2011 campaign off to a slow start going 1-2 as: |
