The Heels defense was stout last night
North Carolina -1 vs Tenn - An instant classic and the best game of the bowl season so far. TN had abandoned the run game from the outset and QB Tyler Bray had a coming out party. Throwing for 312 yds, Bray had his third TD pass (out of 4) with 5 minutes left as the
Vols took the lead for the first time all night. But UNC blocked the
PAT keeping the Heels within a FG 20-17. Tenn had a chance to clinch the game when they got the ball back with 1:36 but they were unable to get a first down and punted the ball back with 0:36 on the clock.

The 'Boys defense was sky high for the game
OK State -4.5 vs Arizona - The Big Book of Guesses got an easy one last night as OK State demolished Arizona
36-10. OK State's first drive stalled but AZ fumbled the punt return at their own 26 and the 'Boys made em pay. Six plays later OK State was up 7-0 and the BBofG
8 game string of opponents scoring first was finally over. Arizona then drove to OK St 34 but blew it on 4th down. The 'Boys made em pay again with a bomb to a wide - I mean wiiiiiide open Justin Blackmon (who took it all in by running right in front of the goal line for about 40 yds
before stepping in). But AZ was not about to give in yet as they took their next drive to the house to close the gap to 14-7. OK St got a FG to end the 1st quarter and a 17-7 lead.

WV looked like they would rather dance than play offense
West Virginia -3 vs NC State - Well that blew
Now I know why West Virginia hired a new OC as coach in waiting for next year. Even with Noel Devine back healthy - the 'Neers made themselves one dimensional by completely abandoning the run game. Devine was given the ball only 8 times for 50 yds. 28 of those yds came on a nice run to open the 4th qtr which he then fumbled. Turnovers were a killer for WVA as they lost 4 fumbles and 1 INT. The defense was actually not bad even though they let up the most points they have all season at 23.

Midway through the game was 16-7 with NC St having made 3 40+ yd FGs and WVA having missed 2. NC St scored its last TD with 4 minutes left after WVA fumbled it away on their own 7 on a punt return - grooooan. Let's see - terrible play calling, turnovers out the wazoo and poor special teams. Yup - that's the recipe for losing games. Should have taken the under.

The Doofus didn't have a good feeling about the Christmas Week games
Some more entertaining moments in Week 17. My favorite was probably when the Air Force went into its usual routine of letting a Falcon swoop down onto the field during their pregame ritual at the Independence Bowl. Only problem was the falcon committed insubordination and flew away from the field into downtown Shreveport.

The Air Force Special Ops was dispatched to find the AWOL bird which they finally did somewhere around half time. Too bad the Wreck was unable to take advantage of the situation as they lost a heartbreaker 17-10.

The Minnesota Vikings weather travails continued as their game against the Eagles was delayed until Tuesday due a monster blizzard that hit the east coast. It will be the first Tuesday game in the NFL since 1946. While some complained that we are becoming a country of wusses - its probably coming from the same guys who would get all drunked up watching the game and then miss work blaming it on the snow.

The Doofus was in the Christmas Spirit but the results were just ho hum
What a wacky week in the NFL! From the Miracle in the Meadowlands - to a rumbling record setting return by a
lineman in the New England Green Bay game (that was hilarious to watch) - to the Lions getting the benefit on an

offensive
pass interference call to get a shot at OT and the win - it sure was fun to watch the games this week.

Watch Dan Connolly and how he carries the ball,
runs
past the Packers safety
and lumbers for 71 yards - anyone want a sweaty squished loaf of bread?

They won't be kicking to him anymore" - Tom Brady after the game

The Doofus was wearing gear and rooting for Navy!!
The Coaching carousel continued this week and is starting to spin
faster.
Arkansas State... First-year offensive coordinator Hugh Freeze was named as Steve Roberts' replacement. Freeze, was the Red Wolves OC last year.  Yawn...
Ball State... Stan Parrish didn't get as much time as predecessor Brady Hoke; then again, Hoke didn't inherit a 12-1 team as did Parrish, out after two years and going 6-18. The Cardinals are looking at MSU OCDon Treadwell, and perhaps Wisconsin OC Paul Chryst. Sources say another longshot to watch could be Stanford special teams coach Brian Polian, son of NFL Colts President Bill Polian, not far away in Indianapolis. Hope Treadwell gets his chance

Navy will be relying on good Senior leadership this week
A small slate was on tap for Week 14-Championship Week but a lot of good games were played.

First - Congratulations to UConn as they go to a BCS game without having been ranked all year. In a solid defensive effort by both teams - UConn led 16-6 with 9 mins left in the game - with their only TD being a pick 6 with 1:22 left in the first half. USF then forced a  fumble on the UConn 28 and punched it reducing the lead to 16-13. With 1:16 left USF got a tying FG. UConn then drove to the USF 35 and kicker Dave Taggert kicked a career long FG with 17 seconds left to win the game. Big Al is pulling out all the stops this year for the Huskies.
