The Heels defense was stout last night
North Carolina -1 vs Tenn - An instant classic and the best game of the bowl season so far. TN had abandoned the run game from the outset and QB Tyler Bray had a coming out party. Throwing for 312 yds, Bray had his third TD pass (out of 4) with 5 minutes left as the
Vols took the lead for the first time all night. But UNC blocked the
PAT keeping the Heels within a FG 20-17. Tenn had a chance to clinch the game when they got the ball back with 1:36 but they were unable to get a first down and punted the ball back with 0:36 on the clock.

The fun was about to start. Starting on the Heels 20, QB TJ Yates completed a 28 strike to WR Todd Harrelson who held on despite a viscous hit by the TN defender who was flagged for an unsportsmanlike. (Tenn had been getting away with cheap shots all night and it finally cost them). With first and ten at the Vol 37 Yates next pass was complete for 12 yds to get to the 25 where he spiked the ball. From there it was pure chaos - UNC ran the ball to the Vol 18 and as the seconds ticked off the clock some idiot called out for the FG team. Yates waived them off and spiked the ball but too late as the clock had struck zero. Or did it - As the teams were congratulating at midfield the refs announced the play was under further review and determined there was 1 second left (it was the right call).
Kudos to UNC PK Casey Barth who calmly kept practicing kicks along the sideline in the midst of all the madness. He trotted out to the field and kicked the tying FG.
In the first OT the teams traded TDs. In the second OT Bray's inexperience finally caught up with him as he threw a pick, On their possession UNC then calmly drove to the Tenn 9 and Barth kicked the winning FG.
Great game WIN
Getting a little mo going during bowl week - so I'll take a stab at two games today with:
South Carolina -3 vs Florida State - Break out your Titanic DVD, rehang your Brittany Spears poster and play a game of Super Mario Brothers – it’s the '90's all over again as Spurrier takes on Florida State. While this match up doesn't have National Championship implications it should be pretty entertaining nonetheless. FSU will most likely
become one dimensional as their average running game will go up against USC's ninth ranked run defense. Those stats include having to against two great running teams in Bama and Auburn. 6 of the 12 rushing TDs USC allowed were against Auburn. FSU QB Christian Ponder had 2 minor surgeries in Dec on his injured elbow but is expected to start. If he struggles FSU will need to rely on backup EJ Manuel who was subpar in his only start against Va Tech
throwing 2 picks. USC can be passed on so FSU will hang around.
USC's offense is led by freshman phenom RB Marcus Lattimore. He has 1,198 yds and 17 TDs and the ability to catch out of the backfield. The passing game has on of the best WR in Alshon Jefferey. At 6'4" 235 he should have a field day against an undersized FSU secondary.
The last time USC played in the Georgia Dome they were pantsed by Auburn in the SEC championship game 56-17. Wanting to avenge that loss and Spurrier wanting to get back at his old nemesis with a month to game plan - I like the 'Cocks chances of going back down I-20 to Columbia with a win in hand.
Central Florida +6.5 vs Georgia - playing the motivation factor here. Georgia is coming off a 6-6 season that has Mark Richt on a luke hot seat. 25th ranked UCF with 16 Georgians on their roster will be licking their chops with a chance to take on an SEC school. The 'Dawgs running game took a hit when RB Caleb King blew his academics. UCF has speedy linebackers and has stuffed the run all year long. Georgia will get their yards with top 5 pick WR AJ Green going against an OK but not great UCF pass defense. But UCF will get their yards too with mobile true frosh QB Jeff Godfrey and two RBs who combined for over 1,400 yds. Georgia has been gashed by teams who commit to the run. Wish I was getting 7 here but I'll take a shot at 6.5 - To Hell with Georgia
