I took the football watching on the road for the Championship games - travelling to my Aunt Betty's to meet up with the Mother of all Doofusses and cousin Robin. Robin made enough appetizers to feed a Canadian logging camp while at the same time keeping our glasses topped off with Captain and Cokes. Her catering experience came in real handy and was well received.

I Meanwhile Aunt Betty’s roving pack of 6 large hunting dogs (down from her career average of 13.8) were very happy to see someone new – always wanting to watch the game on your lap while being petted. Unable to watch the action – it was a couple of ear scratches and then on the floor with you.

As we steered the pack away from the TV we were able to watch a couple of great games. I went 1-1 again with my Mega Bets as:

Baltimore @ New England over 50.5 – I taught the Mom what an over and under was. She really got into betting the over. Whoever has the ball – that’s who you go for. No need to pick a team. Just get into the end zone. We were having a blast as the Patriots and Ravens traded punches – putting up 33 points in the second and third quarter.

I don't F*&%ing believe it - the Pats are playing defense
Dan invited us over to the Scaliwag Slats Sunday. Unable to get a flat screen from Costco (the one he was eyeing was only available on line)  - he pulled out an old relic of a TV - started a great fire using left over materials from his many home projects and then served up some nice snacks and adult beverages.

We all scooted back in our chairs - peered though the flames and settled in for a fine afternoon of NFL football.

Dobbie accidentally opened up a 21 year old scotch (I think he was saving it for a better crowd). As we hurriedly finished it off I watched as my Mega Bets went 1-1 with:

Denver +13.5 @ New England – Man, Tom Brady must hate Tim Tebow. He just seems to get fired up when he comes to town. I guess he must figure he is really God's favorite.

And what was up with the Pats defense? They played out of their minds! Brady, Belichick and the boys scored 2 TDs late in the second quarter to get up 35-7 at the half as the buried the Broncos 45-10

The Doofus deck was no where to be during a lightning storm
I invited the Whiskey Swilling Cigar Chomping Football Society and Glee Club over to watch the Lions on Saturday. A huge thunderstorm broke out just before kick off. Braving the elements (we were sitting outside in a steel cage of a gazebo covered by nylon with electronics plugged in) we saw the Lions get destroyed 45-28. How bad were the Lions – the Saints had zero punts for the game. Oh well, at least the whiskey swilling and cigar chomping went off well. With the Lion playing defense like a WAC school there was little to celebrate and the glee club stood mute.

But at least the Mega Bets kept its winning streak intact as:

Week 19 Mega Bets Recap:

Denver +8.5 vs Pittsburgh – That was easy! After holding the Steelers to 2 field goals in the first quarter, the Broncos exploded for 20 points in the second quarter. Up 14 points and getting 8.5 made the half time meal go down real easy. Pittsburgh came back to tie it with 3 minutes left in the game. I figured the only way Denver could blow the spread is if Pittsburgh scored a FG on the first possession and then did a pick six under the new overtime rules (which allow a team a possession if the other team scores a FG on its first possession). The point became moot when Denver won the toss and elected to receive. Now they could only lose by a max of 6 points. The point became really moot when the Broncos scored on the first play causing the shortest OT in NFL history. Final score Tebows 29 Rburgers 23 WIN

Any one need a light for their cigar?
The Doofus Deck (Mike nominated the Doofus Den – I like it and tweaked it just a little) was overflowing with football fans on Monday as we partied through chilly windy conditions and tons of exciting football. We had so many partiers I was afraid Fire Marshall Bill was going to show up.

The Big Ten took it in the shorts again  going 1-3 on the day. But the Spartans carried the day with a great defense and timely special teams. I have never seen an over time where 1. The team that through a pick on the first possession still won 2. A team missed two field goals and 3.  had a triple OT with no TDs. The deck was rocking all through the game!!

Penn State started out the day by getting blown out by the Houston Cougars 30-14 followed by South Carolina giving a wedgie  to Nebraska by an eerily similar score of 30-13. Wisconsin capped off the Big Ten beat down losing to Oregon 45-38. Unlike last year – I went against the Big Ten on New Years and was rewarded by ending up in 4th place in a 200 person pool by the end of the day. The success was short lived when Michigan paid off the refs and jobbed Va Tech on Tuesday dropping me to 9th and no chance to get in the money. F#%k the Blue.

Overall the Mega Bet win streak continued in week 18 as

Week 18 Mega Bets New Years Day Bowl games

The Man Cave needs a new name
The Man Cave is going to need a rebrandng. According to this years list from Lake Superior State University of the most over used and "should be banned" terms - Man cave was near the top. Don't disagree with that one - so I will have to come up with a new name for the former Man Cave.   Right now I am leaning towards the Fortress of Fun.

The gang is coming over Monday for lots of good football. I'm sure they will have plenty of derogatory replacements.

Last week was yet another winning week of Mega Bets. Even more fun was that all the games came down to the last minutes. The Doofus went through a stocking full of Rolaids.

Week 17 Mega Bet Recap:
Miami +9.5 @ New England -
This one seemed in the bag early as the Fins jumped out to a 17-0 halftime lead.  But the Pats went to the no huddle and scored on their first five possessions of the second half - taking a 27-17 lead with three minutes left. The Doofus was steaming until Santa left an early Christmas present. Matt Moore threw a 15 yard TD pass with 1:48 left to get the back door cover. nice! Final Brady's Boys 27 Miami 24 WIN

The Doofus Brothers came into town
The Doofus brothers came in from around the country to celebrate the Holidays. Good times with lots of football, teaching the younger ones how to win money on dice games and other exciting reindeer games!

And while the household was finishing off its second barrel of rum and diets the Doofus was having another solid weekend of Mega betting finishing up 2-1 with:

Week 16 Mega Bets:

Cincinnati -6.5 @ St Louis - The Rams scored a TD with 1 minute left to make the score seem closer that it was. Good thing I got in a 6.5 - Final Score Bengals 20 Clams 13 WIN

Seattle @ Chicago under 35.5 -
The killer for unders is defensive scores and special teams. This game was full of them. Seattle forced a fumble at the Chicago 22 which led to a TD. Chicago responded by scooping up a Seattle fumble and going for a TD. And that was just the first quarter! Seattle and Chicago both had pick sixes and the Seahawks returned a punt to the Bears 29 yd which led to a TD. Just brutal - Final score - Seattle 41 da  Bums 14 Over LOSS

Week 16 Mega Bets and Bowl Confidence Picks

The Doofus wore his snazziest Navy gear last weekend
Its that time of year again when way too many bowls are played. Some teams (that would be you UCLA) didn't even qualify to play in a bowl but fired their head coach, got an exemption and head up the coast to play another coaching carousel member - Illinois in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl. The Fight Boredom Bowl is more like it.

But for every clunker there are plenty of interesting matchups. And to keep you interested in all the bowls there are Bowl Confidence pools to play in. I'm in two. Last year I was winning one until the Big Ten melted down on New Years Day.

But before we get into the Bowl picks here is:

Week 15 Mega Bets recap:
Houston +3.0 @ Cincinnati - pulled this one out of the backside of the trousers. Houston QB TJ Yates (a Tar Heel no less) scored the winning TD with 2 seconds left to beat fading Cincinnati - Final Texans 20 Bungles 19 WIN

The Doofus has been on a tear lately going 8-2 since the GO JUMBO weekend!!

Week 16 Mega Bets:

Cincinnati -6.5 @ St Louis -
Cincinnati has been reeling lately losing three of their last 4. But against a ravaged St Louis secondary, QB Andy Dalton and WR AJ Green should have a field day. Meanwhile a banged up Rams QB Sam Bradford is going to spend much of his time scraping astro pellets off his butt as the Bengals rank 6th in sacks while St Louis has given up the most sacks this year.

The Doofus kept the gang in plenty of good spirits
Good times in the Man Cave last weekend as we watched plenty of championship football. The booze was flowing and the cigars were burning in a rip roaring good time!

Unfortunately, what could have been another classic ending for the Spartans ended in disaster. Trailing 42-39, MSU returned  punt to the Wiscy 1. It set up what would have been an phenomenal ending. 1:49 left, no time outs, first and goal at the one. A TD to win, field goal to go to OT. Epic

But noooo- there is a flag. MSU runs into the punter. Bucky goes into the victory formation and runs out the clock. Lame Lame Lame.

But the Doofus had third straight great week going 2-1 as:

 Week 14 Recap

Baylor -3.0 vs Texas -
Baylor scored the most points ever against Texas and set records for home wins and Big 12 wins as they rocked the Longhorns on Saturday. Texas QB Case McCoy got  Texas up early 21-14 but then melted down with 5 turnovers. Baylor got the lead 24-14 with 50 seconds left in the half and never looked back. Final Baylor 48 Cows 24 WIN

Float like a butterfly - piss like a bee
Had a choice to make this weekend - whether to go to the Iron Bowl (Alabama @ Auburn) or an Old Fashioned Hate (Georgia at Georgia Tech).

Being a good Dad, I gave the oldest son the Iron Bowl tickets and watched the game in the Flats.   Both home teams lost but still a great weekend of College Football.

Speaking of which - the Doofus was on fire last weekend going 3-1 on the Mega Bets and 3-0 on the Mini Megas. Too bad last weekend wasn't the GO JUMBO weekend. I would have cleaned up. Of course - my personal effects would have be strewn across the front lawn when I got home but that's another story for another day.

It's Championship Weekend with the MAC, CUSA, Pac 12, Big Ten, ACC, SEC and for all intents and purposes the Big 12 all putting on championship games.   I'll be watching the games with the Whiskey Swilling Cigar Chomping Football Society in the newly heated Man Cave. Good times will be had by all!

And I will be rooting for

Week 14 Championship Weekend Mega Bets:

Baylor -3.0 vs Texas - Rumors circulate that Texas HC Mack Brown will step down after the season. I think Mark is the source of the rumors. Texas continues to flounder while Baylor will give them a whoppin' while they still can. Bears QB Robert Griffin III is expected to play after suffering a concussion last week. Baylor is giving three equal to the home field advantage - which means these teams are supposedly equal. Don't believe it - Baylor is playing much better than Texas right now. I'll lay the points.
