Matt Millen's Legacy
It's finally here. After months of pretending to be interested in baseball - Football is here.
Time to fire up the grill, don some Spartan gear, put the beer in the cooler and raid the humidor. The Man Cave - after a well attended shake down cruise last Sat. night - is now fully operational. Let the games begin!!
But before we get into the picks - some more interesting goings on this week. In Knoxville Tennessee, HC Derek Dooley banned his Mom, Barbara Dooley, from the radio. Apparently she was must listen to radio in Tennessee since "She's funny, opinionated, outspoken and sounds exactly like the hysterical Southern aunt that every family has." Dooley claims she hurts recruiting. "He doesn't like that I don't have a filter," said Barbara. I don't know about you but if I wanted to make sure my Mom did something - I would tell her she was banned from it. "Mom, I forbid you to sky dive" Next thing I know, parachutes would be landing in my back yard.
Matt Millen continues to prove he is an absolute idiot. Fired from the Lions after leading the team to the only 0-16 record in NFL history - he was canned by the NFL network after 2 years as an analyst . Millen is now considered a college football expert by ESPN. Asked who would replace the suspended Jacory Harris as QB for Miami - he answered "Jarrett Lee". That would be a good replacement if it weren't for the fact that Jarrett plays for LSU! Click here toRoll the tape of the idiot Millen Maybe after Saturday's game, Lee can quickly transfer to Miami in time for their game against Maryland on Monday. How nice for ESPN that Millen will be calling the game. He'll be sure to bring great insight. What a moron.

NCAA all-purpose yardage record-holder Damaris Johnson was suspended indefinitely by Tulsa on Friday after he was questioned by police following his girlfriend's arrest for embezzlement. She was a checkout girl at Macy's and got caught charging 34 cents for stuff costing over $1000. What sells for 34 cents at Macy's? Even the gumballs cost 50 cents.
Lots of good story lines in this weeks games. In South Bend, HC Skip Holtz, son of Mush Mouth Lou Holtz takes his South Florida Bulls up north to take on the Fighting Irish. Should make for some interesting times in the Holtz family suite. The Domers are favored by 10. Skip is 27-10 when getting points so I'll take the Bulls to cover.
For all the picks click the file below. It's formatted for easy printing and has all the games, up to date spreads, results from last year (revenge games are good betting angles), Sagarin ratings, game times and networks, and, of course, the picks by the Big Book of Guesses. A handy guide for all you football fanatics.

The Nicktator, Nick Saban, takes on his Alma Mater, Kent State in Tuscaloosa. Saban played DB for the Golden Flashes, graduating in 1973. That means he was a freshman during the Kent State shootings in May 1970 Four dead in Ohio. Explains a lot really. (upload takes awhile but classic music). The Tide is favored by 38. KSU's only chance is if Saban shows some mercy. That doesn't seem to be in his nature. I'll go with Bama to cover.
Dark horse Heisman candidate, Houston QB Case Keenum, will be looking for revenge after UCLA knocked him and his back-up out of the game last year. UCLA went on to win 31-13. I like Houston in a vengeful mode giving 3
Cal will play all their home games at either Candlestick or AT&T Park while renovating their stadium. First up will be Fresno State. The Bears are favored by 9 1/2 at many casinos but by 10 at the Las Vegas Hilton. FSU HC Pat Hill is 5-1 against the spread versus non-WAC foes the last two years. I'll take the 10 and Fresno.
Colorado has lost 16 in a row on road and travels to inhospitable Hawaii to open the season. Hawaii is 22-12 against the spread including 7-0 last year at home. I'll take the Warriors laying 7.
WVU and Marshall meet in the Friends of Coal Bowl WVU vs Marshall. A rather misleading name as these teams are anything but friendly. In a rivalry game I'll take the points. Marshall is getting 23 which should be enough.

Keep your poweder dry early in the season
But its how you bet 'em more than how you pick 'em. Those games are good for some chump change just to keep it interesting. This early in the year you are better off going light on the bets. Keep you powder dry until you can get a better feel for teams.
Still it is fun to make a few Mega Bets - even if it means going light - so here goes....
Week 1 MEGA BETS
Indiana -6 @ Ball State (Neutral Field) - As you can see - I like revenge games. In another revenge match up - Ball State hosts Indiana in Indy at the Lucas Oil Field. The last time these teams played, Ball St won 42-20 in 2008. There will be a lot of Hoosier Seniors looking to avenge that loss. Both teams have lousy defenses so expect a ton of points (consider taking the over 55.5 as a side bet) The best player on the field will be IU WR DeMarlo Belcher who skipped pay days on Sunday to return for his Sr. year. Belcher will have a great game as the Hoosiers cover the 6 points.
Ohio -7 @ New Mexico State - Another angle I like to play is to bet against bad teams. New Mexico St was one of the worst last year ranking 111th (out of 120) in offense and 113th in defense. Meanwhile, Ohio has been a consistent MAC contender behind a stout defense and conservative offense. Expect the Bobcats to grind it out and cover the 7 points.
Colorado St - 6 @ New Mexico - There is bad and then there is next level bad. Was there a worse team than New Mexico last year? Lobo HC Mike Locksley would have been fired at other schools for such accomplishments as going 1-11 in back to back years, having a sex discrimination lawsuit fied against him by his admin. asst (later withdrawn) and being suspended and fined for punching an asst coach. The only reason Locksley remains is the school can't afford the buy out.
Last year New Mexico was 120th in offense and 119th in defense (how much worse can you get?) Don't expect New Mexico to be much better this year. There have been injuries and transfers galore. Colorado State was nothing special last year but hopes to get to mediocre behind second year QB Pete Thomas. I'll take Rams to handily beat the train wreck of a team in New Mexico and the 6 points.
Remember - only 10 weeks to VEGAS BABY!!
GO JUMBO!!
