Last one out of the WAC please shut the door!
The Conference realignments just won’t stop. The latest rumor is for Florida State and Clemson to leave the ACC and join the Big 12. The reason is of course more dinero. 8 million more in fact. Andy (don’t call me Merle) Haggard, chairman of the FSU Board of Trustees is spouting that number. Plus he feels that the ACC is too centered on the state of North Carolina and basketball. His is torn about leaving though. The costs of travelling to Texas, Kansas, Iowa etc would eat into the extra monies from TV. And he says that the ACC has better academics. Yeah – like that is important to FSU. Real hang up is the estimated $20-25 million break up fee. Stay tuned.
Meanwhile, the WAC is on its deathbed. Hawaii, Nevada, Fresno State, Utah State and San Jose State are all bolting for the Mountain West while Louisiana Tech heads for Conference USA. The two new members from Div 1AA, UT San Antonio and Texas State are leaving after one year. UTSA will also head to CUSA . Texas State figures the grass to be greener in the Sun Belt. That leaves just two schools – those power houses New Mexico State and Idaho. In what could be the ultimate slap to the face, Idaho is considering dropping down to Div 1AA rather than stay in the WAC. Two Div 1AA schools bolt after one year and another school would rather be in Div 1AA that be in your conference. Good job commissioner Jeff “the Turd” Hurd!
The NCAA better get a handle on this constant conference realignment or the politicians will….. Ugh

The NFL finished their draft. Personally I like the draft. It combines my two favorite sports. NCAA football and the NFL. You get to see how your favorite players rack up and your favorite NFL teams get fresh blood.
But in the end one draft does not move the needle much. It takes several drafts by quality organizations plus some targeted free agents to make a lasting impact. In reality the real good teams will still be very good and scheduling parity will sort out the rest.
But in the interest of my take on the draft. Indianapolis was forced to take Andrew Luck after the decided to part ways with one of the greatest QB’s of all time. We will see how this works out as can’t miss franchise QBs miss all the time. The Redskins way over paid for RGIII. So much so that they took MSU QB Kirk Cousins just in case. Washington still amazes me by setting new lows for incompetency every year. They must have Matt Millen on double secret speed dial.
After Luck and Griffin the well had gone dry on elite QBs. That didn’t stop the Dolphins and Browns from taking a QB in the first round. Big over reach for both teams. You can pencil in bust next to Tannehill and Weeden right now. Tannehill may see the field for Miami just because Matt Moore and David Garrard will stink up the joint. Weeden is 29. He should be at the peak of his career not fighting to be a starter.
Some picks I like are Luke Kuechly LB to the Panthers. Guy is a tackling machine. I also think Trenton Richardson RB to the Browns will make an impact but they still will flounder behind their emerging QB controversy. And Green Bay shored up their defense with DT Nick Perry out of Southern Cal. He was a steal at number 28.
Meanwhile, Seattle way overdrafted with LB Bruce Irvin. Guy went in the first round. Could have had him in the second or third. Even then he is a one note player with speed off the edge. He will get eaten up in the NFL. Also Dontari Poe DT to the Chiefs will turn out to be a workout wonder. Great measurables but he couldn’t dominate in the Sun Belt so why will he be a great pro?
The Lions finally drafted someone to protect Matthew Stafford. OL Riley Reiff looks good but I still remember that can’t miss OL from Wisconsin Aaron Gibson – huge bust. We will see. Then the Lions went with quantity versus quality by taking 3 CBs in the late rounds. The nightmare of Drew Brees torching the secondary in the playoffs last year isn’t about to go away with these guys.
The Falcons did not have a first round pick as they are still paying the price for overpaying for Julio Jones last year. The gift that just keeps on giving.
Cantor gaming has released spreads for all the 2012 football games except for the joke that is week 17. For all the spreads click here .
According to their picks – it looks like New England will win every game by about a touchdown. Same with Green Bay. And New Orleans will not feel the effect of Bounty gate either…
Some lines for VEGAS BABY weekend that seem interesting are Pittsburgh only giving 1.5 at Cincinnati. Over the last 7 years the Steelers are 10-4 versus the spread against the Bungals. Arizona is getting a point at Minnesota. Viking RB Adrain Peterson is rehabbing an ACL in 2012. It takes 2 years to get over those surgeries. I’ll also be looking at Oakland giving 5.5 to a visiting Jacksonville. Jag QB Blaine Gabbert was flat out horrible last year. If he shows no improvement the Jags will be destroyed on a West Coast trip.
In the NCAA there has been a scheduling change. There is an additional game for the early arrivees on Thursday. Houston will be facing SMU in what is usually a high scoring affair. Can’t wait to get there. Ellis and I will save you a seat if you are coming Thursday!
