The Sax Man and I went down to the Big Guy’s place for a combined birthday party. I’m pleased to say that the Doofus Deck 2.0 has found a nice home. Now christened the Doofus Deck West, it’s showing its age a bit - especially after a less than careful roofing contractor made some tactical hits on the canvas. The Big Guy made some repairs using every handyman’s favorite tool, duct tape.
He also made a nice improvement – a fire pit. Good thing, it was a bit nippy. Using some Boy Scout water to get the fire going along with some Knob Creek, our body temps were raised to a proper temp. The Big Guy set up multiple TVs, Polka brought an excellent Oreo Peanut Butter icebox pie, I brought some cigars and we sat back and watched football underneath the stars. Great time.
And there are more great games this weekend including:
Notre Dame +10.0 @ Florida State – Plenty of games were called the Game of the Century back in the 21st century and the 1993 version of this game was one. But we all know there was one true Game of the Century and it did involve ND but it happened 1966.
That said, the 1993 version of this game was a damn good one. #2 ND led #1 FSU 31-24 when Charlie Ward took the Seminoles to the Domer 14.

Your welcome Mark
The last second heave was knocked down and the Irish escaped with the win. What is forgotten is that ND then lost the next week to Boston College. Ooops.
This year its #2 FSU hosting #6 ND. The Domers were caught in a look ahead situation last week as the struggled to beat North Carolina 50-43. Up until then the defense was hanging tough.
The line is an over reaction to last week. FSU is not the steamroller of last year, struggling to beat Clemson and NC State.
Here’s a fun fact – When in games where both teams are 6-0 or better ND is 9-0-1. We all know when the 1 happened. I’ll take the points.
Texas A&M +14.0 @ Alabama – The last two years this game have been instant classics. In 2012, Johnny football burst on the football landscape with a 29-24 win. Then in 2013, A&M exposed the supposed invincible Bama defense in a 49-42 loss.
This year, Bama’s offense was supposed to lead the charge to another national championship, Then Ole Miss (loss 23-17) and Arkansas (win 14-13) happened. So much for the offensive juggernaut.
Once again, too many points for me. I’ll take A&M and the points.
Georgia Tech -2.0 @ North Carolina – Duke upset the Jackets last week after having two weeks to prepare. Carolina has been a defensive sieve this year without the opportunity to have an extra week.
Last week the Heels hung tough against ND. The line has over compensated for the close loss. I’ll take the Wreck, which leads the nation in 3rd down conversions at 58.9%, to sustain drives, kill the clock and get the cover.
Kansas State +7.0 @ Oklahoma – The Sooners are vulnerable this year. Two weeks ago they got beat by TCU and last week they were out gained by Texas 482 yards to 232 yet still won 31-26. A pick six and kickoff return for a TD were the difference in the game.
KSU is not likely to make those same mistakes and come in prepared and healed after a week off. Even though KSU is 1-5 in their last six against ranked team and Stoop is Is 8-2 against his mentor Bill Snyder, I’ll still take the points and the Wildcats.
Oklahoma State +10.0 @ TCU – tough call here. I like the bounce back scenario for TCU at home after a crushing loss to Baylor last week.. The Frogs offense did their part - Every game this year TCU has scored on their opening possession while also scoring the first 14 points. But the defense collapsed in the 4th quarter – letting up 24 points in the last eleven minutes.
I go back and forth on this game so in the interest of, if you can’t decide take the points - I’ll take the Pokes and the points.
For this weeks Mega bets I’ll take
Week 8 Mega Bets
Kentucky +10.5 @ LSU – Kentucky is a controversial triple OT loss to Florida from being unbeaten and being one of the biggest surprises in college football. The Wildcats offense is humming right now hanging 45 on South Carolina and 48 on UL Monroe. The pass defense has been surprisingly good too ranking 12th overall.
LSU is a young team and the defense is not up to previous years. Last week they let up 27 to Florida who can’t score a lick and 41 to Auburn. The offense is struggling, so far they have punted 43 times. Sounds OK until you realize the punted 44 times all last year.
And the 3rd down conversion rate has dropped from 57.1% last year (#1 overall) to 36.3% (102nd)
Both these teams played close games against the Gators and blew out UL Monroe. They’re about equal. I know Death Valley is worth a few points but 10.5? I’ll take the Cats and the points in an exciting game.

Washington +20.5 @ Oregon – Oregon has owned the Huskies winning 10 straight. The closest games was a 17 point win in 2011. And the Ducks are fresh off a pounding of UCLA last week 42-30. It’s for that reason that Oregon may be overlooking Washington.
The Husky’s Hau’oli Kikaha leads the nation by a mile in sacks this year with 10. And LB Shaq Thompson has four defensive TDs on the year. Overall, Washington is third in the nation in sacks with 24.
That doesn’t bode well for a leaky Oregon offensive line. To be fair the Ducks do return LT Jake Fisher which should tighten things up a bit. But the Huskies have an active front seven on defense and will create problems for the Oregon offense.
New HC Chris Petersen is 2-0 against the Ducks. I don’t see him going 3-0 but he should keep them within 3 TDs. I’ll take the Huskies and the points.
NY Giants +6.5 @ Dallas – Dallas beats Seattle in Seattle and the talking heads have them in the Super Bowl. Vegas sees an opportunity to sucker in Cowboy fans and moves the line from 3.5 to 6.5. I’m not buying, thank you very much.
This is the same Dallas team that struggled to put away mediocre Houston and St Louis teams. The Giants pass rush will harass Tony Romo and limit the Cowboy offense. Dallas meanwhile will be reading the press clippings and feel over confident after defeating the defending Super Bowl champs.
Should be a close game. I’ll take the points.
I'll take some Mini Megas with
Army -3.5 @ Kent State - Don't let me down Dwink
Clemson @ Boston College Under 45.0
Rutgers +21.0 @ Ohio State
And I'll do a Point Whore Parlay with
Tennessee +16.5 @ Mississippi
Colorado +20.5 @ USC
Nevada +12.0 @ BYU
And the Sheriff says:
The Sheriff’s picks the last few weeks have been terrible so he’s going to venture outside the PAC-12 this week in search of new inspiration.
Minnesota (-12.5) over Purdue. The Golden Gophers are 5-1 with their only loss coming at TCU. Jerry Kill’s boys could be the team of destiny in the BIG-10 West this year, and as much as I hate to bet against my Boilers, I’m probably doing them a favor.
Doofus: Minny is 10-4 as favorite but Purdue 7-3 as road dog. I’m leaning to taking the points.
Baylor/West Virginia OVER (79.5). Two high-powered offenses against two less than stellar defenses makes a recipe for the OVER.
Doofus: In two previous meetings the winner scored at least 70 points. Sounds good to me
Wyoming (+1.5) over San Jose State. This is tough one because the Spartans looked good last week in crushing UNLV 33-10 and Wyoming lost to Hawaii on Oahu, but I can’t bet against the Cowboys at home (War Memorial Stadium in Laramie, Wyoming has the highest elevation of any FBS school at 7200 feet).
Doofus: Wyoming better win at home while they have a chance. Next two games are at Colorado State and Boise State
And for all the games, spreads, picks records ATS and much much more here is the Week 8 Bettors Guide
