The big football news over the week was not the NFL. That is still in meltdown mode as more incidents come out. More will come and demands for money are sure to follow.
Nope – the big news is the melt down over at the Fort. Michigan fans are debating two things – 1. whether Hoke will last the season (yes) and 2. Whether AD Dave Brandon will go first (yes again). In a rain soaked afternoon, Utah delivered a beat down to the Wolverines 26-10 that put what should be the final nail in Hoke’s coffin. Even better- the Big Ten went 12-1 with the lone loss being, you guessed it, Michigan. Michigan’s “high powered” offense has not even gotten into the red zone against Power 5 teams let alone score.
Now the thinking hope is that a “Michigan Man” (whatever that is) will take over as AD and hire another “Michigan Man” to be head coach. Fairy tales of one of the Harbaughs leaving the NFL to lead the program are floated. Maybe all is forgiven and Les Miles will return to Ann Arbor. Floyd Carr would have a heart attack but it’s for the good of the program they say.
Dream on Wolvies. No coach in his right mind is stepping into that cluster. After the season is over, Michigan will go through multiple hires before stumbling on a good coach. Check out the basketball program. After going several misfires they finally got the right guy in Beilein.
Michigan is a mess and MSU is in the Top Ten for more than a few weeks at a time. It’s a great time to be a Spartan.
And speaking of Michigan - Pete sent along this great memory. It was 20 years ago this weekend and it was one of those moments that you remember exactly where you were. The gang had left the Spartan game at halftime as State was blowing out Miami (OH). As usual, we decided to go to Dagwoods. A few Spartan Burgers and even more pitchers later we got to watch this fantastic play.

The place erupted. Grown men were hugging and high fiving. Singing broke out. Probably my favorite Dagwood’s memory. Thanks Pete.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Sheriff went into 3 day funk over this play. Cal was pounding the Wildcats 31-13 entering the fourth quarter. Arizona then went on a tear scoring 30 points but still trailed 45-43 with 2:44 left.
Cal got to the Zona 29 but missed a FG. The Wildcats took over with 52 seconds left – 5 plays later they were at the Cal 47 setting up this dramatic play

That’s the bio for Rich Rod and Sonny – great offenses – no defense. There were a total 50 points scored in the fourth quarter. Fun to watch but bring your pacemakers.
Week 4 Recap
When the Sheriff recovered from the Debacle in the Desert as he calls it he took solace in that his picks went 3-0 with:
Virginia (+14) over BYU. The Cavs dominated the stats 519 yards to 332 and time of possession but still got the loss. A close enough loss to get the cover – Final Score BYU 41 Virginia 33 WIN
Cal (+9.5) over Arizona. A tough loss but also close enough. Final Score Arizona 49 Cal 32 WIN
Kansas State (+9) over Auburn- A great game by both teams Final Score Auburn 20 Kansas State 14 WIN
The Big Book of Guesses was not too good last week going 29-34 on the week but the Mega Bets went 2-1 leading to another profitable week
Missouri -13.5 vs Indiana – Mrs Pete was ecstatic this weekend. Not sure if it benefitted Pete though. Guess we can ask we get together.
If there was one game I didn’t mind losing it was this one. The Big Ten finally awoke from its nightmare as it beat God’s Gift to Football – the SEC. For the first time in 48 games, Missouri was not the beneficiary of a turnover. In fact, they had forced at least 2 in the last five games.
The teams were exchanging scores when Mizzou went up 27-24 with 2:20 left. But the Hoosiers were not quite done. The marched down the field (helped by a critical pass interference call on 4th and 6) and punched in the winning TD with 22 seconds left – Final Score Indiana 31 Mizzou 24 LOSS
Oklahoma -7.5 @ West Virginia – Oklahoma bruising freshman RB Samaje Perine ran for his weight as he notched 242 yards in Morgantown. The teams were dead even at the half 24-24 with a big help from this Alex Ross KO return

Then Perini kicked it in another gear going for 3 of his 4 TDS in the final 30 minutes. His final one iced the game to put the Sooners up 45 -27 with 8 minutes to go. It meant that even with a WVU TD they would not get a back door cover.
The ‘Neers did just that getting a TD with 2:18 left to pull within 45-33, The on side kick failed and Oklahoma ran out the clock – behind the running of Perine. Final OK 45 WVU 33 WIN
Nebraska -7.0 vs Miami (FL) – And it was also 20 years ago that these teams were playing for a National championship. The outcome was to be the same.
These teams were going at it in a chippy game. Ameer Abdullah was outstanding again going off for 229 yards and 2 TDS. His last one was the clincher, scoring from 10 yards out to put the Huskers up 41-24 with 4:13 left. Once again, I had enough points to not need to worry about a back door cover. And once again, Miami scored a meaningless TD with 18 seconds to make the final score Nebraska 41 Miami (FL) 31 WIN
Jason was in the LVH this weekend laying done some of his cash (and a bit of mine) and had a very profitable outing too as he went 4-1 on Saturday with:
MSU vs Eastern Michigan over 54.5 - Final MSU 73 EMU 14 WIN
Georgia Tech +8.0 @ Va Tech – Final GT on walk off FG 27 Va Tech 24 – WIN and pandemonium over at Bruce’s house WIN
Oklahoma WIN
Missouri LOSS
Utah (natch) +4.5 @ Michigan WIN
He followed that up with a 6-1 NFL day with
Kansas City +4.0 @ Miami – Final KC 34 Miami 15 WIN
Indianapolis -7.0 @ Jacksonville – Final Indy 44 Jax 17 WIN
Detroit -2.5 vs Green Bay – Final Leos 19 Pack 7 WIN
Cincinnati -7.0 vs Tennessee – Final Cincy 33 Tenn 7 WIN
Houston +2.5 vs NY Giants – Final Giants 30 Houston 17 LOSS
Dallas -1.0 @ St Louis – Final Dallas 34 St Louis 31 WIN
Arizona +3.0 vs San Francisco – Final Zona 23 San Fran 21 WIN
Outstanding weekend. Can’t wait for the GO JUMBO trip. Looks like Vegas is giving away money.
Week 5 Mega Bets:
The Sheriff is going with:
Cal (-13.5) over Colorado: The Bears will take out their frustration on the Buffs and get their first PAC-12 conference win since 2012. Jared Goff will throw for 500 yards and/or 5 TDs. This is my lead pipe lock of the week.
Wyoming (+31) over Michigan State: Wyoming is a well-coached, disciplined team and I like the Cowboys to cover this number against Sparty the same way they covered 43 against Oregon two weeks ago for the Doofus.
Doofus: First you jinx the Spartans against Oregon by picking them to cover. Then you go against the Big Guy (though it was a win) Now you pick against MSU?? You are probably going to be correct but if this keeps up you may face a suspension.
Oregon State (+9) over USC: This is a tricky pick for me because I’ve been (rightly) accused of hating the Condoms with a passion, but I think USC got exposed two weeks ago against BC. And Sark is starting to look more like Lane Kiffin than Pete Carroll. Mike Riley will be searching for the nearest IN-N-OUT burger around midnight on Saturday after the Beavers beat the Trojans.
The Doofus is taking:
Minnesota @ Michigan Under 43.0 - I'm piling on the bandwagon. Nick is probably rolling his eyes but quietly agrees this team does not deserved to be favored over any team with a pulse. The problems start with the QB. Devin Gardner has tossed 6 picks so far this year. He was replaced mid game last week by Shane Morris who promptly fumbled and tossed a pick. The Wolverines are now -10 in turnovers on the year - dead last in Div 1A. Morris is expected to start so the turnovers should continue.
Minnesota has its problems on offense too. It is a very one dimensional attack getting nothing through the air. QB Chris Streveler, filling in for injured starting quarterback Mitch Leidner last week, completed just 1-of-7 passes for seven yards. On the year, the Gophers have only completed 30 passes along with 5 picks. That puts them 124th in the nation.
As bad as Michigan is, they are pretty stout on defense especially against the run. the Wolverines allow 80.3 yards per game which puts them 9th overall.
I expect Michigan to put extra men in the box and stuff the Gophers. Then on offense, move around a bit then turn it over. Rinse repeat. Low scoring game.
And I see Minnesota covering the 13.5 too
Boise State -13.0 @ Air Force - Michigan may be 9th in run defense but Boise State is even better ranking 2nd overall. On the year, the Broncos have allowed a measly 214 yards and 2 scores. High powered Mississippi was only able to rumble for 71 yards against BSU.
That is a bad match up for an Air Force team that does little besides run, On the year, 5'9" QB Kale Pearson has only 2 TD. Both came against an anemic Georgia State. The Falcons may be 2-1 but the best team they have played is Wyoming which turned out to be a 17-13 loss.
Boise State will shut down the Falcon ground game and win by more than 2 TDs with a much more balanced offense.
Nevada -4.0 @ San Jose State - I've been impressed by Nevada so far this year in a win over Washington State (24-14) and close loss to Arizona (35-38). San Jose State, meanwhile, has looked awful in getting blown out by Auburn (59-13) and Minnesota (24-7). The other Spartans let up a combined 739 yards rushing in those two games and 9 TDs. Nevada may not be able to put up those kind of numbers but it should roll SJSU in a similar score to last year's WolfPack 38-16 win.
The NFL is still on Doofus Probation for MegaBets but I will take a couple Mini Megas on:
Miami -4.0 @ Oakland and
Chicago +2.0 vs Green Bay
And this weeks Point Whore Parlay is:
Minnesota +13.5 @ Michigan
Cincinnati +16.0 @ Ohio State
Memphis +21 @ Mississippi
