The Big Guy was in town so Jason held a get together at his new place to watch some football. Like any good Dad I brought plenty of adult beverages and cigars - even chipped in for the pizza.
We missed the early games since we were helping Mrs Doofus hang curtains and other chores but we did get there in time for the evening games.
And there were some pretty good ones. The Irish Purdue game was a yawner but the Boiler helmets were fantastic. Who cares how you play - it's how you look that counts - right Chris?
UCLA scored a TD with 3 minutes left behind backup QB Jerry Neuheisel to nip Texas 20-13. The fans carried Neuheisal off the field, As the Sheriff said - that's what college football is all about.
It helped that UCLA got an extra possession. At the start of the game UCLA won the toss and elected to defer to the second half. Texas then gaffed by electing to go on defense first. Ooops.
Penn State scored a TD late too to spoil Rutger's Big Ten debut 13-10. Of course, Dobby missed the ending since he went to bed early.
But the wildest finish had to be Georgia South Carolina. As usual, Georgia gets their fan base all excited and then comes crashing down. This time it took a bizarre double hook missed FG and the closest first down measurement I ever recall to give South Carolina a 38-35 win over the Dawgs.

I wonder if the linesmen had the measuring stick perfectly perpendicular.? The slightest lean either way would have made a difference. Amazing.
On Sunday, Ellis hosted a little get together with more adult beverages and smokes. He opted to not get the NFL package this year so we were forced to watch the Falcons get trounced. We also got some golf in and a little Glee rerun to at Dan's request. Might have to get a collection together for the NFL package.
Now that the season is three games in, it’s time to take a look at which teams are surprisingly good and which teams are starting to suck hind titty.
Teams to start fading
Iowa – Most teams in the Big Ten can fit into this category but Iowa is a real disappointment. If you are going to schedule patsies – at least beat them soundly. The Hawkeyes opened with a narrow win over Northern Iowa, then barely escaped Ball State (which lost turned around and to Indiana State). On Saturday, Iowa bowed to winless rival Iowa State at home. The offense was pathetic Saturday, reaching the end zone just once over the final three quarters.
Tulsa - It’s one thing to lose to Florida Atlantic on a night when the field is named in honor of program architect Howard Schnellenberger. But the Hurricane should never lose a bad Sun Belt team 50-21. That’s 50 points yielded to a team that began the weekend having scored just one touchdown in the first two games.
Texas Tech - Central Arkansas and UTEP began to pull the curtain back in the first two weeks, but stopped short of upsetting the Red Raiders. Arkansas, and its physical running game, thoroughly exposed Kliff Kingsbury’s team on Saturday. Hog backs Alex Collins and Jonathan Williams trampled the Texas Tech defense for six touchdowns and more than 350 combined rushing yards.
South Florida – I was impressed last week when the Bulls limited an explosive Maryland passing attack in a 24-17 loss. But USF had their doors blown off by NC State 49-17 at home no less. This is the same NC State that came within a point of losing to Georgia Southern and narrowly escaped Old Dominion.
Houston – Many prognosticators thought Houston would be a contender in the American. Not now. It opened with a blowout loss to UTSA 27-10. And don’t be fooled by Thursday’s 33-25 loss to BYU, the game was more one-sided than the score indicated. BYU led 23-0 in the first quarter before shooting itself in the foot with three turnovers.
Troy – How the mighty have fallen. Troy used to be a Sun Belt powerhouse that would sneak up and cover against Power 5 teams. Now they are a carcass. They opened week one with a bad loss to a doormat UAB team 48-10, lost to Duke 34-17 and then got beat by Abilene Christian. Ugly.
UL Lafayette – I used to love taking the Ragin Cajuns. For the last 3 years they have gone 9-4 straight up, dominating the Sun Belt. For some reason the wheels have fallen off. After a win over Southern, ULL has gotten smoked two weeks in a row with losses to Ole Miss 56-15 and La Tech 48-20.
Vanderbilt – Vandy fans were not expecting to have to go through rebuild mode after former HC James Franklin left. But an opening week gaffe to Temple, followed by a blow out loss to Ole Miss 41-3 put the Dores fans in melt down mode. Needing a late rally to beat UMass last week didn’t help.
Northwestern – This is getting ugly Bruce. I thought last year was an aberration. The loss to Cal – not good but maybe Cal is turning it around. But losing to Northern Illinois? That hurts. The Cats had a week off to get their heads screwed on straight. Let’s see if it helps.

Teams to start betting on
Virginia – The DC Jon Tenuta led defense has been lights out so far in 2014. So good, in fact, that they’re might just his job and that of his boss, Mike London. The Cavaliers have so far held UCLA to one offensive touchdown, generated eight turnovers on Richmond and held Louisville to just 282 yards in this last week’s 23-21 big upset.
West Virginia - It took a year for ‘Neer QB Clint Trickett and the rest of the offense to fully absorb Dana Holgorsen’s system. Now the senior quarterback is comfortable and shredding opponents. Trickett threw for 511 yards and four touchdowns to beat Maryland 40-37. He’s now thrown for over 340 yards in every game this year.
Louisiana Tech – Virginia’s and West Virginia’s HCs were on the hot seat but off to a good start in 2014. Perhaps the most stunning HC to start out fast is Skip Holtz at La Tech. The Bulldogs have rebounded from their opening day loss to Oklahoma (they got the cover) with back-to-back routs of UL Lafayette 48-10 and North Texas 42-21 as a road underdogs.
East Carolina - A year ago, the Pirates went 2-1 in the ACC with victories over North Carolina and NC State and a loss to Va Tech. This year he beat NC State again and then traveled to Blacksburg, the week after the Hokies stunned Ohio State, and walked out with an impressive 28-21 win. Next up is North Carolina. Can the Pirates go 3-0 in the ACC this year? Ellis hopes not.
UTEP – The Miners are 3-0 ATS with wins over New Mexico and New Mexico State. They also got an easy cover in a close loss to Texas Tech 30-26. RB Aaron Jones leads the nation in rushing with 552 yards so far. Let’s see what happens when the schedule gets a bit rougher.
Mississippi – The Rebs have been crushing everyone on their path with wins over Boise State 35-13, Vandy 41-3 and UL Lafayette 56-15. All good enough to get the covers too. Ole Miss is 19th in points scored and 4th on fewest points allowed without the benefit of playing an FCS school. They are also one of five teams from the SEC West ranked in the Top 10. Things are going to get real tough very soon.
And how about Cal – They have already doubled last year’s win total with wins over Northwestern and Sacramento State. Get a road win against Arizona and you will really open some eyes.

The results from last week showed a modest improvement as the Doofus went 35-32-2. The Mega Bets went 1-1 as
Week 3 Mega Bets Recap:
Nebraska -10.5 @ Fresno State – When laying double digit points, it helps when the favorite gets out of the gate fast. The Cornhuskers did exactly that by scoring 2 TDs in less than three minutes to get up 14-0. From there they just kept going, rolling up 562 yards of offense in a 55-19 blow out WIN
Green Bay -8.5 vs NY Jets – And what you don’t want to happen when laying big points is to screw up early and get behind. Aaron Rodgers muffs the snap on the very first play with the Jets recovering on the Green Bay 16. Five plays later and the Jets are up 7-0. The Packers get sacked twice on the next possession to go four and out. The Jets then go 84 yards in five plays and suddnely it's 14-0.
The Packers were awful at the start as the ultimately got behind 21-3 midway through the second quarter.
Rodgers then led a great come back to take the lead 31-24 late in the 3rd quarter. The Jets nearly tied it up late in the fourth when Geno Smith tossed a 37-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Kerley on fourth down -- but it was negated because the Jets (1-1) called a timeout from the sideline just before the snap.
Only the head coach and the QB can call a timeout but they both denied it. Turns out it was done by none other than
OC Marty Mornhinweg. You remember Marty. He was a Detroit Lions head coach from 2000 to 2001. He went 5-27 over 2 years and is best remembered for one of

Check out number 3
No one scored in the fourth which led to a Packer 31-24 win and Mega Bet LOSS
The Mini Megas went 2-0 which led to a third straight profitable weekend.
Wyoming +43.0 @ Oregon – Wyoming led 7-0 after one before Oregon rolled to a 48-14 win. Close enough WIN
Arizona -2.5 @ NY Giants – The Cards scored 15 unanswered in the 4th quarter to pull out a 25-14 WIN
The Sheriff had a profitable week too going 2-1 with:
Oklahoma (-20.5) over Tennessee - Final Score - Sooners 34 Vols 10 WIN
UCLA (-7.5) over Texas - Final Score Bruins - 20 Horns 17 - Great game but not enough to get the cover LOSS
Nevada (+15.5) over Arizona. - Final Score Zona 35 Pack 28 WIN
This week the Sheriff is picking
Virginia (+14) over BYU. After beating #21 Louisville and giving #8 UCLA a very tough game, I believe we need to admit that Virginia was severely underestimated before the season began. I like the Cavaliers to cover this number against the Mormons.
Cal (+9.5) over Arizona. Can anyone explain to me why Cal opened as 17-point underdogs only to see that line reduced to 9.5 points only 3 days later? Someone is laying some serious money down on the Bears this week. Cal had a bye last week so they’ve had 2 weeks to prepare for the Wildcats, who struggled to hold off Nevada at home. Could the Bears pull an upset and prove they are once again a worthy PAC-12 program? Or is that 2-0 record a mirage? We’ll find out Saturday night.
Kansas State (+9) over Auburn. Sorry, Doofus, but this smells like a trap game for Auburn. Playing to a national audience on a Thursday night in Manhattan, Kansas is nobody’s idea of fun. Bill Snyder Family stadium will be rocking.
Doofus: The Big Guy is very disappointed in your pick. Should be a great game though.

What the hell is going on in the NFL?
Before I get to this week's Mega Bets, Bruce asked that I comment on the cluster going on in the NFL. What can I say? Adrian Peterson gives a "whuppin" to his kids, Ray Rice cold cocks his girl friend (now wife), and now reports that Jonathan Dwyer is arrested for head-butting his wife and then punching her in the face the next day - believe it or not, this stuff has being going on for years. It was just winked at and covered up by a pliant sports press.
But then Commissioner Goodell badly fumbled the Ray Rice situation and the mainstream press jumped in.
And then he continued to botch it. The limp two game suspension is what got everyone's attention but when the video of the actual punch came out he permanently suspended Rice claiming he never saw the video. Of course he did! It happened in a casino. Everything is on tape. You take a piss in your bathroom and they know if you mis-aimed a little bit and got some on the floor.
The lack of consistency and proportionality is making Goodell and the NFL look like fools. Knock your wife out - 2 games. Oh, the video surfaces and I had it all along - player takes the fall
Take a tree branch to your kids. Crickets......I'll get back to you.
But smoke a little weed (Josh Gordon) and its a year suspension. Hell, maybe the NFL should be encouraging taking a few tokes now and then. Don't ever recall someone giving a caning to anyone after a couple hits. Everyone just sort of melts into the couch - and then speed dials Domino's.
Say what you will about Keith Olbermann but he has got this one right Spot on
And to all you fans who come out in support of these players - you are idiots. Pure unadulterated morons. If they did this to your daughter or your kids you would come after them armed to the teeth with bad intentions. But play for your team and it's let bygones be bygones. Dopes.
So based on the above, as Commissioner of the Big Book of Guesses, I hereby suspend the NFL from any and all Mega Bets until further notice
That and the fact that in reviewing my Mega Bets - I am 3-0 on the Div 1A games and 0-2 in the NFL. Looks like the GO JUMBO trip is going to be the typical win on Saturday, give most of it back on Sunday again.
So in that spirit I am going with 3 college Mega Bets and no NFL picks with
Week 4 Mega Bets
Missouri -13.5 vs Indiana - Of the three Mega Bet wins, two have been on Nebraska and one on Mizzou. Going to stick with a good thing here
I won a Mega Bet on this game last when the Tigers trounced the Hoosiers 45-28 in Bloomington. Nothing has changed much for these teams since last year either. Missouri is still a solid SEC team and Indiana is still a bad Big Ten team.
If you figure changing the venue is worth six points, then this should be a 23 point difference.
Tiger QB Maty Mauk leads the nation in scoring with 12 TD passes (on only 77 attempts) and one rushing TD. He is both efficient and lethal. Indiana let up 395 yards passing last week to Bowling Green's 2nd string QB, Mauk is going to have target practice this week.
Indiana is just 1-6 ATS in its last seven road games and 4-11 ATS in its last 15 road games as a double-digit underdog. Missouri is 5-2 ATS in its last seven home games as a double-digit favorite. I'll go with those trends.
Nebraska -7.0 vs Miami (FL) - Also sticking with a good thing here too. I'm 2-0 backing the Huskers on Mega Bets. Lets go for three.
Last time Miami's freshman QB Brad Kaaya went on the road he got trounced by Louisville 31-13. Nebraska can match that. And Kaaya is prone to throwing picks having 5 picked off in three games.
Miami is not good against the line either going 2-9 ATS in the past 11 overall, and 1-5 ATS in their past six against teams with a winning record. They're also just 1-5 ATS in the past six on the road.
I'll ride the Huskers until they blow one.
Oklahoma -7.5 @ West Virginia - Yeah, West Virginia is off to a good start. but there best game was against Alabama and they still lost by 10. Oklahoma is as good or better than Bama.
And as good as WVU QB Clint Trickett has been his offensive line is not doing him a lot of favors. Opponents have come up with eight sacks so far this year. And the Sooners can get after the QB. They had five sacks against Tennessee last week. The Sooner secondary is also opportunistic coming up with six interceptions on the year so far - including a pick six against the Vols.
And as usual, Holgorsen's defenses are sieves. They let up 33 points against the Tide and 37 to Maryland. Oklahoma will do better than that especially when you consider that the 'Neers suspended starting CB Daryl Worley
Stoops is 6-1 vs. line since late 2013 and has covered four straight away from Norman. The Sooners have outscored their opponents 55-0 in the first quarter this season so expect them to jump out to a quick lead and never look back.
For this weeks Point Whore Parlay I'll go with:
UNLV +21.0 @ Houston
Middle Tenn State +12.0 @ Memphis
UMass +27.0 @ Penn State
For all the games, times, spreads and most importantly picks (and much much more) here is the Week 4 Bettors Guide
