What a great weekend of college football!!
Bruce and I and our lovely brides started out the weekend with the final tailgate of the year. Anticipation was high as Tech was a mere 3 point dog. Mrs. Bruce’s prediction was simple and concise. We win if the good Tech shows up and we are in for a long day of the bad one appears. Bruce, being a wise man, didn’t disagree with Mrs Bruce. Marriage has a way of eroding the independent thought.
While enjoying some of Bruce’s fine gumbo and various beers left over from Thanksgiving we followed the Spartans. State's defense ruled the day again. They kept the Gophers out of the end zone. That means that for the fifth time in the last six games opposing offenses have been held to just FGs.
The offense better get back on track though. They went 0-8 on third down. Nice to have a defense that keeps that from being an issue. So now it’s on to the Big Ten Championship for the second time in three years.
And State’s opponent will be the Bucknuts. OSU nearly blew it against Michigan. The Wal Marters scored a TD with 32 seconds left. But rather than force OT, Brady Choke decided to go for 2. Bad call. QB Devin Gardner threw a pathetic pass that was easily intercepted to kill the comeback.
The highlight of the game wasn’t the ending though. It was the brawl to start the second half.

Too bad the video cuts off before that Buckeye gives the crowd the finger with both barrels. Classy
As far as suspensions - naahh. These are golden haired programs. They can do no wrong
Don't really care though. I don't want any excuses when we beat them!!
And to get you pumped up for the Big Ten Championship game - where is a little video to get the juices flowing

.Yeah baby - Sparty On
OK - back to the great games last week
As the noon games wound down, it was time to head to the Clean Old Fashioned Hate - Georgia vs Georgia Tech. Things got off to a great start as the good Tech showed up. The Bees threw the ball amazing well and were swarming on defense as the built a 20-0 lead. With 34 seconds left in the Dawgs got a TD to cut the half time lead to 20-7. At half time the Sax Man was shown on the Jumbotron bringing a cheer from Mrs. Doofus. Congrats Sax Man!
Things went down hill from there. In the second half Georgia got the passing game going and was able to tie the game at 27 all.
Four quarters was not enough to settle it betwen these two. We were going to need OT. Georgia won the toss and elected to play defense. Tech wanted to use the end zone where the band was. Good choice. They place was rocking. Tech took their first possession and scored a TD. All right! Now if they can play a little defense again maybe they can pull this out after all.
But it was not to be. Georgia’s Gurley Man became a Mutt possessed. He took four straight hand offs and was in for the tying TD.
Switching sides, Georgia got the ball again. This time it took Gurley man one play straight up the middle to get the go ahead TD. Where are the safeties for crying out loud?? He went in untouched.
Tech was not about to give up though. They got to the 11 for a 1st and 10. Two rushes later it was 3 and 2 at the three. Pure bedlam. Tech runs it again but is stuffed for a 3 yard loss. One more play. 4 and goal at the 6.
Vad the Impala throws it into the end zone- tipped! – tipped again!! Incomplete - Arrrrrrggh!! So close. Tech had the game and let it get away.
As we left the field to a lot of woofing and annoying SEC chants we checked our cell phones for the Auburn
Alabama score. When we left our seats the Bama was leading 28-21. By the time we got to the car the Tide was getting ready to kick the winning FG in a tied game. Not sure how the Tigers tied it but I was worried nonetheless.
Fuss texted “block FG return for TD”.
And then the play. Perhaps one of the greatest endings ever. Certainly up there with the Flutie miracle.

Holy crap!! What a play
And Fuss had called it. A few minutes lates he texted “I called dude …. well almost”
Close enough. Great call Fuss.
Auburn now plays Missouri for the SEC champioship and a shot at the National Champioship too. The Big Guy is still partying somewhere over at Toomers Corner.
As far as the other games - the Sagarin favored games went a respectful 12-9 or 57%. Not as torrid a pace as the last couple of weeks but enough to cover the Vegas spiff.
The Mega Bets kept chugging along too. Last weekend I went 3-1 with:
Baylor -12.5 @ TCU – Another slow start to the Mega Bets. Baylor was supposed to be all about the offense but
not in this game. The Bears were held to a season low 370 yards of offense (vs. their Div. 1A leading average of 662 yards) So it was up to the defense to lead the way.
Two pick sixes by the Bears led to a 34-17 lead. Despite the offensive woes I still had the cover. That was until Baylor QB Bryce Petty threw only his second INT of the year giving the ball to TCU at the Bear 25. 2 plays later and TCU was in the end zone cutting the lead to 34-24. TCU was able to get within 3 with 11 seconds to go in the game but Baylor picked off the potential game winner in their own end zone to seal the win 41-38 LOSS

UT San Antonio -16.5 vs La Tech – La Tech
HC Skip Holtz ruined a proud South Florida team and is now on his way of destroying an equally proud La Tech program. Last year La Tech was a fringe BCS bowl team. This year they are just plain awful.
Give La Tech credit – they kept it close for a half. A pick six with 1:45 left in the second quarter but the Road Runners lead to 17-10. But then the Bulldogs quit. It was all UTSA in the second half as the rolled to a 30-10 WIN

Missouri-4.0 vs Texas A&M – This game looked like it also may go south when Mizzou couldn’t get their offense going in the first half against what had been a pretty inept Texas A&M defense. Behind 14-7 at the half Missouri chances didn’t look good. A graphic came up in the screen – Missouri is 11-44 when trailing at the half. Uh Oh.
But things turned for the better. The Tigers took the opening drive of the third quarter to the house to tie it at 14 all. After forcing a punt they took the next drive into the end zone too and now had a 21 – 14 lead.
A&M wasn’t done though – they tied it with their first drive of the fourth quarter. Come on Mizzou – one more TD and get out of here. Sure enough. With 3:34 left in the game the Tiger RB Henry Josey burst through the middle for a 57 yard scoring scamper. Final score Missouri 28 Texas A&M 21 WIN

Arizona +3.5 @ Philadelphia - I called this one exactly right. I was worried that Arizona might be a little unfocused coming off a blow out win the week before. But they should still be able to keep it within a FG and the hook. Arizona proceeds to come out of the locker room and turn it over on their first two possessions. Ugly...
Philly got a TD out of the first turnover but was forced to punt after the second. Zona finally settled down a bit and knotted the score 7 all midway through the second quarter on a bomb to WR Larry Fitzgerald.
But then the Eagles then started pounding away. A FG and then a TD with 15 seconds left in the half put the Philly lead at 17-7. Not only that, Philly took their first possession of the second half into the end zone too - pushing the lead up to 24-7. C'Mon - Wake up Cardinals!
They did - Arizona stuffed the Eagles from then on and scored two more TDs including one with 4:45 left.
Arizona then tried to win the game out right. Late in the fourth they started at their own 10 ...and went 5 yards in three plays. On fourth and 5 Carson Palmer threw an incompletion.
Now I was in a pickle. Phildelphia had the ball at the Card 15 with 1:52 left and Zona still having 2 timeouts left. Zona was sure to use them giving Philly plenty of opportunites to score. I was going to get reveresed Wanstadted!
The best outcome would be for Philly to get a first down but not a TD. They got the first down alright but not because of a great play by Philly. It was due to an unsportsmanlike penalty on Zona. Didn't matter. It allowed the Eagles to run out the clock. Final score Philadelphia 24 Arizona 21 lucky WIN
That brings the Mega Bet record to 10-4 since the GO JUMBO weekend. Sure would be nice if the picks would be this good when it counted. Oh well.
Seeing how it is Championship week there aren't a lot of Div 1A games to choose from. As far as sagarin favored teams there are 8 games:
Louisville -2.5@ Cincinnati
Rice +6.0 vs Marshall
Memphis Pick em @ UConn
Central Florida -10.0 @ SMU
Missouri +2.0 vs Auburn (Neutral Site)
UL Lafayette -3.0 @ South Alabama
Utah State +3.5 vs Fresno State
And of course - everyone's favorite team
Michigan State +5.5 vs Ohio State (Neutral Site)
No way am I going to take a Mega Bet against Auburn. The Big Guy would be crushed. And that would make Mrs. Doofus angry. Even winning a Mega Bet is not worth the wrath of the Mrs. I can just see it now - You were rooting against Auburn?? and then THE LOOK. I'm shuddering just thinking about it.
As far as Memphis vs UConn - not sure if I've ever tested the Big Al rule outside of Vegas but I better not risk it. Last thing I need is to find out it applies and screw up the Spartans.
And I can't pick the Spartans either as a Mega Bet as that would just plain jinx them
So for this weeks Mega Bets I'll go with:
Week 15 Mega Bets
None of the other cllege games look very lling either. Utah State is without their starting QB while Fresno State is 1-15 against the spread coming off a loss as a favorite. UL Lafayette starting QB is also doubtful. Central Florida plays down to their competition and may not play with much gosto. They clinched a BCS spot as the All American champions. And despite what Sagarin says I think Marshall could roll Rice. (though I will still pick Rice)
So I will limit the Mega Bets to just one NFL game this week:
NY Giants +3.0 @ San Diego - Two teams headed in different directions. The G Men have won 5 of thier last 6 while San Diego has lost 4 of their last five. Yet San Diego is favored. New York is playing with confidence and the D Line has started to more like a typical Giants DL. recording 17 sacks over the last 5 games.
A resurgent Eli Manning should have no problem moving the chains against the 31st ranked Bolts pass defense. The spread is a typical home field spread but San Diego's home field advantage is pretty meager as they are 0-4 as home field favorites and 1-4 ATS in their last five. add in San Diego may be looking ahead to next weeks battle with Denver and I see the Giants winning this game out right.
And here are all the games, spreads, picks and much more for week 15
