I went with a Doofus daughter and Mrs Doofus to a college visit last weekend. The campus was much nicer than I expected. At the end of the tour the did the usual “listen to the students tell you how great campus life is” Of course it’s great. Its college!! If you’re not having a great time you’re not trying.
Now this college made a big mistake. They had the meet the students upstairs in the Student Union. Behind them were several TVs showing ESPN. I wasn’t paying a lick of attention to the spiel. The game was OSU @ Illinois. Illinois was one the Sagarin favored teams and was keeping it close. Early in the game the Illini scored and I let out a
“Booyah Baby! That’s the way you do it!!
I was greeted with stares and a sharp elbow by Mrs Doofus.
I was able to keep it under wraps for the rest of the game but I still missed most of the spiel. After the game the Doofus daughter met up with a friend to spend the night in a dorm. Mrs Doofus and I wandered through town until we found a local watering hole. Inside they were showing several games including the Spartans @ Nebraska and Georgia @ Auburn. We bought a couple yards of beer (each – it was college after all) and kicked back for a couple of great games. The Spartans leveraged 5 turnovers into a divisional championship while Auburns miracle win over the Mutts got Mrs Doofus all excited. A happy wife means a happy Doofus!
Let’s hope the Doofus daughter gets the scholarships she was testing for. I could use a few more repeat visits.

As far as the Sagarin favored games – the phenomenal trend continues as the went 14-5. Wow.
Of course I happened to pick one of the five as a Mega Bet with
Week 12 Mega Bet recap:
Va Tech -14.0 vs Maryland - It was senior Day for Va Tech. Maybe they were too focused on looing good for Mama and not spending enough time prepping for the Terps. Maryland jumped out to a 21-7 crushing any hopes of covering the 14 point spread. Hokie QB Logan Thomas reverted to being awful again but did enough to force OT. Maryland pulled it out in the extra innings eventually winning 27-24 LOSS

Vanderbilt -12.5 vs Kentucky – This game also started out poorly when Kentucky scored a TD first. Things were looking bad until the Dores blocked the extra point and ran it back for a safety.
Vandy shut out Kentucky the rest of the way but were struggling offensively too. Late in the foruth quarter the Dores were up 15-6 and running out the clock. Kentucky turned it over on downs deep in there own side of the field. Luckily, Kentucky had just enough timeouts left to keep Vandy from going into victory formation. I figured Vandy
was going to kick a FG that would get the score up to 18-6. A win but not a cover. It was going to be another version of getting Wanstadted.
But on third down the Dores run a play action and toss an “in your face” TD pass with 47 seconds left. Kentucky was pissed. I was geeked. Final score 22-6 WIN
Miami +1.5 vs San Diego – Another close victory. Miami had built a 20-16 lead midway through the final period. But San Diego was not going away quietly. With 1:54 left they started on their 17. They were able to drive to the Fins 25 with 6 seconds left. Rivers dropped back and threw it into the end zone but it was swatted away. Fins win 20-16 WIN
The Doofus goes 2-1 for the second straight week. Let’s see if we can do it again with:
Week 13 Mega Bets
Using the Sagarin ratings has been on fire. This week again it’s a target rich environment with
Buffalo -24.5 @ Miami (FL) - Final Buffalo 44 Miami (FL) 7 Win
Ohio -7.0 vs Kent State – Final Kent State 44 Ohio 13 Loss
Northern Illinois -2.5 @ Toledo – Final Northern Illinois 35 Toledo 17 Win
Central Florida -17.5 vs Rutgers – Final UCF 41 Rutgers 17 Win
UNLV +2.5 @ Air Force – Final UNLV 41 Air Force 21 Win
So going into Friday the Sagarin favored teams are 4-1
On Friday its Navy +1.5 @ San Jose State
And on Saturday there are plenty to choose from including
Florida State -57.5 vs Idaho (Holy Crap FSU is giving 57.5 and its still not enough – Idaho is bad)
East Carolina -6.0 @ NC State
Duke -5.0 @ Wake Forest
Michigan State -7.0 @ Northwestern
Indiana +34.5 @ Ohio State
Illinois -6.5 @ Purdue
Houston -3.0 vs Cincinnati
Florida Atlantic -21.5 vs New Mexico State
Tulsa -3.0 @ La Tech
Tulane -16.5 vs UTEP
Bowling Green -25.0 @ Eastern Michigan
New Mexico + 32.0 @ Fresno State
Boise State -6.5 @ San Diego State
Utah State -9.0 vs Colorado State
Arizona +20.5 vs Oregon
Colorado +22.0 vs Southern Cal
South Alabama -3.5 vs UL Monroe
Mississippi State -2.0 @ Arkansas
Missouri -2.5 @ Ole Miss
Vanderbilt -2.5 @ Tennessee
So there are still 20 betting opportunities this weekend
With the Sagarin Rating getting so many correct I’m going to up the ante a bit this week and take four Mega Bets with

With the Sagarin Rating getting so many correct I’m going to up the ante a bit this week and take four Mega Bets with
Houston -3.0 vs Cincinnati – Cincinnati is 8-2 but don’t let the record deceive you. The have played nobody this year. There best win was last week when they crushed a reeling Rutgers. Before that it was what Memphis? Purdue?. Hell they lost to Illinois and South Florida. Houston is the third best team in the AAC after Louisville and UCF – who represent 2 of their 3 losses (the other is a pretty solid team in BYU). Houston crushed Rutgers too and actually beat South Florida.
With the spread at 3.0 and Houston at home indicates that Vegas thinks these teams are equal. They’re not. Houston is better – especially on defense. Houston rolls at home (well kinda home until they build their new stadium)
Bowling Green -25.0 @ Eastern Michigan – EMU was putrid before they fired their HC Ron English for being a dick. They allowed 50, 56, 59 and 55 points before finally beating an equally inept Western Michigan team last week. Meanwhile, Bowling Green rolls bad teams like Ohio 49-0 and Miami (OH) 45-3. This will get ugly.
Missouri -3.0 @ Ole Miss – I’ve had a good luck so far taking Missouri on Mega Bets. Small wonder – they are 8-1-1 against the spread. The Tigers get QB James Franklin back after injury. If he falters back up QB Maty Mauck is ready to go. He was superb in his stead. It really doesn’t matter who is under center.
Missouri has a great pair of WRs in Michael Sam and Kona Ealy.
With two good offenses it will come down to who has the better defense. Answer Missouri.
For the NFL pick I’ll go with
Arizona -2.5 vs Indianapolis – The Cardinals are rude hosts. The have beaten the Lions, Panthers, Falcons and Texans in the desert. Indy has pretty much wrapped up the AFC South and so will not be focused in this game while Zona needs this game to keep pace for a wild card spot. I’ll take the Card defense to keep an uninspired Colt offense in check.
The Sheriff is going with
UCLA (+2.5) over Arizona State. I’m surprised UCLA is the underdog since the game is at the Rose Bowl, but if Vegas insists on giving me points, I won’t complain. I’ve been riding UCLA all year long and I’m not going to stop now. UCLA’s LB/RB Myles Jack will score at least two touchdowns.
Minnesota (+16.5) over Wisconsin. I’m not sure Minnesota can win this game (Wisconsin is just too good), but I’m pretty confident they can cover. The way this team has rallied around its epileptic coach (Jerry Kill) is one of the better stories in college football this year.
Michigan State (-7) over Northwestern. After watching Sparty beat Nebraska, I think the Big 10 Championship game will be more competitive than most people realize. You guys are for real. Northwestern’s season is in free fall (sorry, Bruce). Michigan State wins this game easily.
