That was awful
Not the game watching at Bruce’s – that was a good time
And not the Spartans – they won but struggled late again. As “Hatin Ass Spurrier” said, the Spartans are like that bum under the bridge. Just a quarter away from getting their act together.
No, what was awful was the other games, and even worse – the Doofus’ picks.
Mrs. Doofus and I went over to Casa Bruce to watch Tech, State, Auburn and a host of other great games. Food was served, beverages were poured and we sat back for the first game - Duke @ Georgia Tech. We were keeping an eye on he stands too as the Sax Man was at Bobby Dodd.
The game was a disaster. The pass defense had some critical breakdowns , none worse than letting up a 30 yard strike when it was 3rd and 26 late in the first half. Duke went up 14-6 one play later.
The Jackets also coughed up the ball three times including a disastrous pick at the Duke 10 when they were still in the game, trailing 24-12. With 8 minutes left in the game Duke had increased the lead to 31-12.
Tech made a game of it scoring 2 TDs, behind their backup QB, to close to 31-25 with 1:27 left. We were rooting for the onside kick. Could there be a miracle?
Nope, the onside kick failed and Duke ran out the clock. It was the first time in ten games that Duke beat Tech.
And to make things worse there was 1 hour 17 minute lightning delay which meant that the game overlapped the State and Auburn games. Since there is no Doofus Deck at Casa Bruce, watching all the games required some nimble remote control clicking. But, mental exhaustion and the intensity of the Tech game led to untimely gaps. We were to miss some early scores of the other games.

When we did finally catch up to the State game, the Spartans were off to a great start. The offense was clicking and State was up 21-3 early in the second quarter. And they kept going, increasing the lead to 38-17 after 3. But once again the Spartans like to make things exciting in the 4th.
State’s defense started off the 4th quarter with a nice strip sack to get the ball at midfield. But Connor Cook returned the favor by throwing a pick.
The defense was holding, but then on 4th and 2, Purdue sprints 52 yards for a score. Crap. It’s still State 38 Purdue 24 though – no need to panic.
Then a play that had everyone scratching their heads. State goes nowhere on their next drive and on 4th and 6 at their own 29 they try a fake punt. WTH??
It picks up one yard and Purdue takes over at the State 30. I know Dantonio trusts his defense but why put them in that spot?
Four plays later the Boilers score and the score goes to MSU 38 Purdue 31 - 6:19 left.
And just like against Nebraska, State burns off clock but still needs to punt. Sadler makes another punt inside the opponents ten putting the ball at the Purdue 5, 3 minutes left.
My heart rate is picking up though - Purdue is one drive from putting this game into OT.
And once again, the defense comes through with an interception. This time a pick 6!
State wins 45-31. I can finish the sangria Bruce has stewed for a good couple hours. Nice
Still, State has not scored an offensive TD in the fourth quarter for three straight games.
And then the disasters started.

Week 7 Mega Bet Recap
Auburn -3.0 @ Mississippi State – Perhaps it was best that the clicker was periodically set to nap. Auburn got off to an awful start. I thought Miss State would get off to a good start with the home crowd super pumped after Game Day was in Starkville. But not this.
Auburn had two plays and both were turn overs. Suddenly there was four minutes off the clock and the Tigers were down 14-0.
Auburn finally hangs on to the ball but punt from their own 26. The Bulldogs score again. 21-0. And there are still 6 minutes left in the first quarter.
Auburn tried to make a game of it. As the home crowd died down a bit, the Tigers cut the lead to 28-20 by the end of 3. Then the wheels fell off again. Mississippi State opened the 4th quarter with a FG to go up 31-20. Auburn muffed the kickoff return. First down MSU at the Auburn 15.
One pass later and its 38-20 Bulldogs. MSU then shuts down the prolific Auburn offense limiting them to one FG for the rest of the game. The Bulldog defense was superb. They held Auburn QB Nick Marshall to 17-35 passing, 2 picks and a 35.7 QB rating. Auburn's red zone numbers coming into the game were perfect scoring on all 21 drives. But on Saturday they were 4 for 6 with 20 points. Starting late in the first quarter, three straight drives got inside the MSU 10 resulting in only 6 points.
Final score Mississippi State 38 Auburn 23 LOSS The big Guy returned from the game drenched and pissed. Not a fun day.
East Carolina -15.5 @ South Florida – If you are laying big points, you can’t get off to a slow start. East Carolina got off to a slow start falling behind 21-7 to USF at the half. The Pirates turned it up a notch in the second half scoring 21 unanswered to win it 28-17. Got the win but not the cover. LOSS
Oklahoma State -20.5 @ Kansas – And the other thing you don’t want to do when laying big points is let a team back into the game. The Cowboys were cruising leading 20-7 at the half. One more TD and they would have the cover.
But something happened at the half. Kansas, who couldn’t score with a cheap hooker, all of a sudden gets hot and ties the game 20 all with 7 minutes left. Oklahoma State then returns the KO return to take the lead 27-20 and win the game. But well short of the cover. LOSS
San Diego -7.0 @ Oakland – San Diego could never put the Raiders away. Each time one team scored the other would answer. Each team scored 1 TD in the first three quarters leaving the game 21 all after 3
Oakland opened the fourth quarter with a TD but this time San Diego counters with a FG. The score is 28-24 Oakland with 6 minutes left. I’m in trouble.
Oakland punts on their next drive and the Chargers make a great return to the Raider 39. Six plays later San Diego gets a TD and its 31-28. It’s going to take a miracle to get the cover though. We are inside the two minute warning and I still need another TD.
On the first play of Oakland’s next drive QB Derek Carr is stripped sacked at the Raider 15. All right!! I might get this game after all. But the fumble is overturned and Oakland keeps the ball. The Raiders end the game with an interception at the Charger 5. Final score SD 31 Oakland 28 LOSS
If you are keeping track – that meant the Mega Bets went 0-4. That is awful. And the Mini Megas were only slightly better.
Penn State Pick ‘em @ Michigan - Final - Michigan 18 PSU 13 LOSS
West Virginia -6.0 @ Texas Tech – Final - WVU 37 TTU 34 LOSS
Florida International +11.5 @ UT San Antonio - Final UTSA 16 FIU 13 WIN
Buffalo -14.0 @ Eastern Michigan- Final – Eastern 37 Buffalo 27 LOSS – after the game Buffalo HC Jeff Quinn. Quinn was not on the Hot Seat List. Last year he was 8-5 and went bowling. But you just don’t lose to Eastern Michigan
Air Force +7.0 @ Utah State – Final – Utah State 34 Air Force 17 LOSS- I should know better than to pick against my Aggies
Miami +3.5 vs Green Bay – Final – Packers 27 Fins 24 WIN

So what the F happened?
I couldn't blame the Big book of Guesses it went 36-34-0
I wanted to blame it on getting too pumped up to last week’s GT pregame speech.
Well partially. I did let emotions get ahead of clear thinking. It’s the same damn lesson I have to relearn every year. Don’t take so many road favorites. Combining the Megas and the Minis I went 2-8. That’s hard to do. But if I had taken the home teams I would have gone 9-1.
I took a look at last year. Same damn thing in week 6. I went 0-3 by taking too many road favorites.
Not sure why I force myself to have to retake that lesson again. But I do.
How pissed am I for making this same mistake? This pissed

That’s UCLA HC Jim Mora having a bit of “disagreement” with his DC Jeff Ulbrich. Mora was a bit cheesed with the defensive play calling after an Oregon touchdown. And Ulbrich didn’t take too kindly to the criticism, handing Mora the play sheet, taking off his headset and referring to various body parts as what he can do with it.
Yea, I was that pissed.
And it’s a good thing I am just wagering quatloos. I would hate to have to make this same damn mistake in Vegas.
OK lesson learned (again) – don’t overload on road favorites. They are usually coming in unmotivated against a weak opponent and don’t cover. That’s not to say there are not opportunities but overloading on road chalks is a good way to lighten your wallet.
This week I’ll make sure to have a more balanced diet.
And the Sheriff needs to reevaluate his picking habits too as he had his third straight losing week going 1-2 with:
OVER (71.5) Cal/Washington - Final score - Washington 31 Cal 7 Loss
Arizona (+2.5) over USC. . – Final score USC 28 Arizona 26 Win
UCLA (+2.5) over Oregon. – Final score – Oregon 42 UCLA 30 Loss
I'll have the week 8 picks out later this week.
And week 8 actually starts tonight. Tonight's game is UL Lafayette travelling to Texas State. Texas State is home and favored by 2 1/2. I've always liked the Ragin Cajuns but I'm trying to get out of the habit of taking road teams. Then again, when in doubt take the points.
Naw, I'll take the bobcats and lay the points. No quatloos though
