OMG!!
WTF!!
What the hell is going on??
The texts were coming and furious late Saturday night. I was ignoring them all.
Ellis called. I ignored that too. The Spartan Nebraska game was too intense.
State was absolutely dominating Nebraska. That is, for three quarters. After Tony Lippett scored to put the Spartans up 27-3 Chris was this close to calling it. If the lead stayed the same for a few more minutes he was ready to put a fork in the Huskers.
His fork would have to wait. The miscues started early in the 4th quarter. Punter Mike Sadler had been amazing for three quarters. The announcers were all over his ability to pin teams down by punting inside the ten. Sadler shanked his first punt on the evening. The Huskers returned it to the Spartan 43.
The Spartan defense had been amazing too. They had held Nebraska’s prolific running game to 13 yards in the first half. In the first half, State turned it over three times in the first half. Nebraska got no points. Now holes were starting to develop. 7 plays later it was 27-9. Nebraska missed the PAT.
OK – we let one slip. Just burn some clock and get out of here with the W.

Nope. MSU goes three and out with two pass incompletions. An unsportsmanlike penalty on Jack Allen (his second leading to an ejection) put MSU back to their 13.
Sadler’s punt is OK but Nebraska makes a fair catch and will starting at their 45. They drive to the State 36 but turn it over on downs with 10:52 left. Chris and I have our forks out. This game is just about over.
I called Mrs. Doofus to get my ride home. Just enough time to finish my last, and now designated victory cigar.
This time State does a much better job burning clock using up over 5 minutes before punting to the Nebraska 32. Chris and I were recapping the day’s games assuming a Spartan win.
Not so fast – Nebraska scores a TD in and minute and a half to make it 27-16. Still, there are only 4 minutes left and State is up two scores. No need to panic.
State goes three and out, Nebraska uses all their timeouts to set up the final anxious minutes.
Sadler does another OK punt but this time the Huskers take it to the house.
Holy Crap!!
Now its 27-22 with 3 minutes left. It seemed as if the old Spartans had returned. The ones that always found a way to blow a game. Nightmares of collapses against Purdue, against La Tech and the worst, Notre Dame, started to surface
Dantonio’s greatest legacy until now was not the Big Ten Championships. Nor was it a Rose Bowl win. Those had happened before. No, what Dantonio had done is to exorcise the Spartans from their epic meltdowns.
But after the Oregon game, and now this, it seemed as if the demons had returned.
We better not blow it!

My cell phone was pinging like crazy. No time to read and respond. I was too engrossed.
I was thinking about earlier in the game when they had a little segment on Conner Cook. He said that before the game he put down three things to do, three objectives for the game – finish finish finish. Now was his chance.
He didn’t finish. In a drive where they needed to chew up clock – it lasted four plays. The worst was when Jeremy Langford tries to get a game winning first down but goes out of bounds. 40 seconds were still on the clock that need not be there.
I can’t believe it!! The phone is really going off now.
Your ride is here. It was from Mrs. Doofus. I was to regret ignoring that text.
Punting blunders had led to two scores. Now it was the FG units turn to add to the chaos. A 36 yard FG attempt boinked off the left upright and then off the cross bar. No good…
Ping! This can’t be happening! Ping! WTH!
If State was to hold on to this game then they would have to rely on the unit that gives the Spartans their identity. Their strength. The defense.
With no time outs and 1:07 left, Nebraska abandoned their ineffectual run game and went to the pass. A 43 yard bomb put the Huskers at the State 37 first and ten.
If the defense were to fold then the demons had truly returned. This was more than one game. Years of rebuilding could be undermined. It was an anxious moment.
First and ten…Incomplete…Whew..
Second and ten 35 seconds left- ball still on the Spartan 37 and…
Pick!!! Trae Waynes came through!! The defense held. Demons of collapses past were to remain banished. These Spartans can hold on through intense adversity. The rebuilding has not weakened. Spartans hang on to win 27 – 22. What a game.

I let out a huge sigh of relief and then thanked Chris for a great day. He had hosted another outstanding day of football at the Outdoor Ampitheatre.
It seemed that all our teams had won in a day full of upsets. For the first time since 1990 five teams in the top ten had gone down. It was almost seven.
Week 6 recap
Florida State 43 Wake Forest 3 – It looked like this may be a game for a while. After a half, Dan’s FSU squad was leading by a way too close 13-3. But they dominated the second half scoring on five of six drives with a fumble return for a TD by the defense to boot. Slow starts may work against NC State and Wake but it may catch up to the Seminoles.
Va Tech 34 North Carolina 17 – Ellis’ Tar Heels were the only of the gang’s team to poop in the punch bowl. But hey, at least the kept the Hokies under 50 points. Ellis is now emailing updates about the upcoming basketball season. Time to start fading the Heels.
Army 33 Ball State 24 – A week after embarrassing themselves against an Ivy league team, Dwink’s Army team came through against the MAC. Army delivered back to back haymakers in the fourth quarter. The Black Knights scored a TD with 3 minutes left and made a pick on the Cardinals ensuing drive to put the game away.
Ohio State 52 Maryland 24 – Chris’ Buckeyes joined the party with a blowout win over Maryland. We kept telling Ellis that OSU was beating an ACC team. He said you guys can have Maryland.
Purdue 38 Illinois 27 – It was so good for the gang that even Chris’ Purdue squad won. Mike and Kibby made their annual Big Ten road trip to this game. Illinois decided that defense was optional in letting up scoring plays of 44, 54 and 80 yards. Exciting, but not a very well played game. Illinois must really stink if they lose to Purdue. Bye Bye Beckman.
Notre Dame 17 Stanford 14 – Mootsie got an important W as his Domers nipped the Cardinal. Conditions were dreadful due to a torrential downpour. There were three different FGs that were missed because the holder couldn’t get a grip on the ball. But when the rain subsided the drama kicked in.
After the ND kicker made the only FG of the game the Domers kicked off. Stanford made a nice return to start at the Domer 42. They then went on a nice 4 minute drive to score a TD. The score was now 14-10 Stanford with 3 minutes left.
Notre Dame responded with their own nice drive – getting it to the Cardinal 23 – 4th and 11. Last chance. One play would decide the game – this play

I know a lot of fans of the BBofG are throwing up in their mouths watching that but give Mootsie his due – it was a great play.
Rutgers 26 Michigan 24 – Dobby’s Scarlet Knights delivered yet another knock out blow to Brady Hoke’s reign at Michigan. Michigan missed a wind aided 56 yard FG with three minutes left. Rutgers then ran out the clock and the students stormed the field. Not sure why – everyone in the Power 5 conferences beats Michigan. It’s the first time since 1967 that UM started the Big Ten 0-2.
Northwestern 20 Wisconsin 14 – What a turnaround for Bruce’s Cats. After starting the season with losses to Cal (which doesn’t look all that bad now) and Northern Illinois (that’s still bad) the Cats have now reeled off back to back wins over Penn State and Wisconsin. Northwestern was able to withstand a 259 yard day from UW RB Melvin Gordon by trouncing the Badger passing attack. Wisconsin was 12-29 through the air with four interceptions. Strange as it sounds the Northwestern Nebraska game could decide the BIG West.
Georgia Tech 28 Miami (FL) 17 – And how about the Wreck! 5 and 0 baby! Bruce went home for some chili dinner and never returned to watch his other team. He wanted to be with Mrs. Bruce as Tech beat the Candy Canes for the first time in six years. Tech getting 352 yards rushing was great but not that unusual. What is difference with these Jackets is the ability to make plays on defense. The Tech defense made two key interceptions. One was late in the first half, with Miami at the GT 27 that would have given the Hurricanes the lead and this one at the end of the game that sealed it

And there were plenty of other great games two as the college football landscape made huge shifts this week.
Utah 30 UCLA 28 - Utah’s Andy Phillips nailed a 39-yard field goal with 34 seconds to play to take the lead. UCLA then went on a nice drive using up the rest of the clock to get to the Utah 37. Ka’imi Fairbairn lined up for a walk off game winning FG. Miss! But wait - there’s a running into the kicker penalty. He gets another chance Yeah – he missed that one too. Take your chances on betting on UCLA. One week they are demolishing Arizona State 62-27. The next their losing to a not very good Utah team.
Arizona State 38 USC 34 – And speaking of the Forks – what a crazy last four minutes in that game. It started when ASU scored on a 21 yard TD pass to get within two 27-25. A minute later USC bolts for a 51 yard TD run to stretch the lead 34-25. The Sun Devils were now down two scores with 3:02 left
They were not fazed – ASU hits on a 73 TD pass. Score USC 34 ASU 32. Forks need a stop.
And they get it but USC has burned all but 23 seconds. ASU drives to the USC 46 to set up this play.

What is it with PAC 12 and Hail Marys this year? Don’t leave your seat until the final whistle blows.
Not only is the PAC 12 going wire to wire but they are slowly cannibalizing their chances at making the playoffs. Along with UCLA and Stanford going down - add Arizona's upset of Oregon 31-24 on Thursday. More losses among the top teams are sure to come – improving the Spartans chances.
And while the PAC 12’s cannibalization is self-inflicted – The SEC West’s is scheduled. The best division in all of college football by far (the number of losses to teams outside the division? – zero) went toe to toe this Saturday with some great games
Ole Miss 23 Bama 17 - Over the last two years, the Rebels lost to the Crimson Tide by a combined score of 58 to 14, hadn’t beaten the Bama since 2003, and had won just three times in the series since 1976. But with Katy Perry cheering them on the Tide never had a chance.
It did take a furious finish though to get the win. Bama was leading 17-10 when the punted the ball to the Rebs with 6:24 left. Bo Wallace hit on a 34 yard TD pass to tie it with 5:29 left.
Then the fun really started. Bama fumbled on the ensuing KO return giving the ball back at their own 31. Bo then hits on this sweet one handed TD pass

Couldn’t happen to a nicer coach.
And it was football Nirvana in the Egg State as the other MSU won too – blowing out Texas A&M 48-31. And the score didn’t reflect how badly the Bulldogs dominated the Aggies. The score was 48-17 with less than 3 minutes left. The Aggis scored two meaningless TDs to end the game.
The Aggies may have been blown out but they did score on one great catch

Speedy Noil – gotta love that name.
As far as Mississippi State, in years past they’ve been the schoolyard bully, beating up on the weak and helpless but folding like a cheap suit against good teams. Not this year. They have now taken down A&M and Arkansas. With Dak Prescott under center they now have an offense to go with their usually solid defense.
The SEC West race leadership race now travels to Starksville Saturday where the Bulldogs face off against Auburn. Should be a great game.
Over in the Big 12 – the championship race and spot in the playoff picture got a bit clearer. Baylor held serve against Texas as expected but the surprise was
TCU 37 Oklahoma 33 – TCU finally got national attention with a big win over Oklahoma. These teams were locked into a great game with the score tied 31 all after three quarters. Then TCU got the winning score on this play

Oklahoma scored by blocking the PAT and returning it for a safety but they were unable to score after that.
TCU this year is similar to Mississippi State in that they finally have an offense to go with a solid defense. And the Big 12 could be decided Saturday in Waco when TCU travels to play Baylor. Lots of good games on tap for this weekend.
In the Independents Notre Dame remains in the playoff hunt but BYU had a huge disaster on Friday. Not only did they lose to Utah State (I love betting on the Aggies) but they lost their star QB Taysom Hill for the year with a broken leg. Christian Stewart came in and was awful, completing 10-of-29 passes and threw three interceptions. BYU’s season is now damp toast.
As far as the betting - meh
The Big Book of Guesses had a winning week going 36-34-1 but the Doofus went 1-2 again as
Oklahoma scored by blocking the PAT and returning it for a safety but they were unable to score after that.

The Big Book of Guesses had a winning week going 36-34-1 but the Doofus went 1-2 again as:
Virginia -6.0 vs Pitt - Virginia was rolling over Pitt racking up a 24-3 lead at the half. Then they took their foot off the pedal. Pitt scores ten points in the third to cut the lead to 24-13. The killer was a Pitt TD with 1:27 to get me with a back door cover. Final Virginia 24 Pitt 19 LOSS
It was the second week in a row that I missed a cover by a point. Hope they're out of the way now.
Auburn -8.0 vs LSU - Auburn is the class of the SEC West. ANd QB Nick Marshall is incredible. He threw for 207 yards and 2 TDs and ran for another 119 yards and 2 more TDs. Wow
As predicted, LSU started out slowly getting behind 17-0 before the 1st quarter was even over and 31-7 by the end of the first half.
But this time there would be no come back. Auburn kept the pressure on winning 41-7 WIN
New Orleans -10.0 vs Tampa Bay - I still suck at betting the NFL. In a week where the Big Book of Guesses goes 9-5 (before tonight's MNF game) I picked this turd.
The game started out well as the Saints went up 13-0 early in the second. Then TE Jimmy Graham went down and the Saints offense fell apart. the defense too.
The Bucs reeled off 24 straight points to take a 24-13 point lead late in the the third. Covering 10 points was virtually impossible now.
New Orleans started clawing their way back tying it 31 all in regulation, finally winning it 37-31 in OT LOSS
The Mini Megas went 2-0 to keep minimal for the week
Cal @ Washinton State over 78.0 Final 60-59 WIN Cal is now a Hail Mary away from being undefeated
New England +1.0 vs Cincinnati - Final score Pats 43 Cincy 17 WIN Watch out when Brady is pissed off
The Sheriff went 1-2 as well with
Colorado (+7.5) over Oregon State. The Sheriff benifitted with the back door cover when the Buffs scored a TD with 3 minutes to go before losing - Final score OSU 36 Colorado 31 WIN
UCLA -13.0 vs UCLA Final score Utah 30 UCLA 28 LOSS
USC -11.5 vs Arizona State - Final score - Arizona State 38 USC 34 LOSS
The Week 7 picks will be coming later this week (and hopefully a little earlier)
