The Suckiness from Week 4 not only continues – its spreading!
It’s official now, the Spartan season is in meltdown. The offense is misfiring and the defense can’t stop wild come backs. And the QB controversy is getting even hotter.
State’s offense was struggling against an inept Hoosier defense but hit a couple of big plays to take a 14-0 lead. I was worried though. We were doing it through the air and not pounding the Hoosiers into submission.
The Spartan defense was great for 45 minutes until with 52 seconds left in the third quarter, Indiana finally reached the end zone. They had changed from trying to pound out the ground game and went to their more typical style of up-tempo passing and it worked.
Indiana scores on their next drive. We are tied. I texted the gang. We are toast. You could just see it. Indiana was moving the ball at will and we looked like the Keystone Kops.
Indiana gets the ball back and scores again! They are up 21-14 with 4:38 left.
The only way we were going to win was to do one of those clocking sucking, pound it out drives and score.

Exactly as ordered sir. State takes all but the last 11 seconds off the clock and scores the tying TD - little “help” from the refs.
Gerald Holmes, who for some unknown reason was on the sidelines until State needed the running game going, scored with 54 seconds left. The refs reviewed it and blew the call by ruling he was stopped short.
Holmes tried again and was stuffed (legitimately this time) On third and goal, O’Conner hit Josiah Price. Joe texted – “Biggest PAT in a long time”
Geiger hits and we are headed to OT. Time for some free football!
Actually time for the Spartan Rodeo Clown show to go into overdrive.
State loses the toss and is forced to go first. O’Conner botches a read option and gets only two yards. Not bad but it was about to get much worse.
2nd and eight. O'Cooner drops back and gets sacked. Throw the damn ball! Never take a sack in OT!
Does he listen? I’m mean, I screaming at the TV. Surely he heard.

Nope – he gets sacked again! One sack is bad enough but two????. That’s pathetic.
Now it’s fourth and forever. Gieger trots out for a 49 yard FG. Miss.
States defense is going to have to win this with either a turnover or a couple of negative plays.
Not even close. Indiana calmly punched it to the State 16 yard and set up for a 33 yard FG
Miss! He whiffed on the winning FG! A miracle!
Except it wasn’t. State’s Drake Martinez was called for a lame “leaping” penalty.

Joe texted again “saw two games today where that happened and it didn’t get called” But they did. The call was correct. It's just a stupid rule.
Indiana continues to march to the 3 and goes for a 20 yard chip shot FG. It’s good. The ‘Ol brass Spitton won’t be taking the bus back to East Lansing.
Now State’s goals at the beginning of the season are out the window. Four games in and #Back2Back needs to be replaced. And lowered.
Joe is hoping for 8-4 and the Holiday Bowl. I was wondering if 8 wins is realistic.
After a couple day funk I realized that, yeah, 8 wins is realistic. Dantonio will get this thing turned around. MSU is realizing that old lesson that you have to earn wins. You can’t just show up and expect a victory to be handed to you.The out going seniors knew it and lived it. But this team is used to winning and assumed it was a given.
Saturday in Bloomington was a tough knock up side the head. Hopefully, they get the message.
State wasn’t the only struck by suckiness. I called the Sax Man before the game. He was walking he neighbors dog.
Why?
Well, he was watching the Georgia Tennessee game. With 10 seconds left Georgia hits a bomb for a TD to go up 31-28. The Saxy Lady was going nuts. And then this happened

She stormed upstairs - pissed as all get out.
I raised my son well. He knew when to get out of there. So he took the dog for a walk until things blew over.
She wasn't the only one upset. I took Tennessee giving 3.5. I was going bonkers with the TD until..... they didn't kick the extra point. Crap. I knew they don't do that in OT but I thought they had to kick the PAT in regulation. Guess not. The Vols won 34-31. Just the way its going this year.
And while the Sax Man was avoiding the Saxy Lady he was dwelling in Suckland too.
Miami (FL) had taken the lead 14-7 over Georgia Tech - and then scored on back to back scoop sixes. Scoop sixes are pretty rate but I've never seen them back to back. Then Canes rolled to a 35-21 win.
And for some real suckiness - Purdue's football field is literally being sucked into the Earth
Purdue football is being sucked into the Earth
The Big Book of Guesses, once again, almost hit 50% going 28-29-2 on the college games. The Doofus improved from horrific to a C- going 1-2 on the Mega Bets and 2-2-1 on the Mini Megas.
Nebraska -20.0 vs Illinois – There was a theme to last weeks results. I took teams trying to exact revenge for a prior year upset. What happened was they got their revenge but I was giving too many points. Rookie mistake.
One thing you can’t do when laying points is turn it over. Nebraska turned it over on two straight possessions at the end of the first half and Illinois capitalized by taking a 13-10 lead. The Illini defense kept the game close. It wasn;t until the 4th quarter that the Huskers kicked it in. They scored 3 TDs with the last at 2:48 left to take a 31-16 lead. Too little too late. LOSS
Boise State -20 vs Utah State – This was a defensive slugfest. Not good when you are laying 3 TDs. At the half it was 7-3 Broncos. Boise ramped it up in the second half and was up 21-3 early in the fourth quarter. Just need one more score.
But the Aggies countered with a TD and Boise ran out the clock. Final score 21-10 LOSS
Mississippi -14.5 vs Memphis – If you are going to lay a bunch of points you got to do what Ole Miss did. Score early and often. The Rebs jumped to a 24-7 lead and then traded scores winning 48-28 WIN
Not everything went poorly last week. The Big Book of Guesses is off to its usual slow start but what is strange is that it’s doing pretty darn good in the NFL. Last week it went 9-6 on the pros to bring the record for the season to 37-26.
The Mini Mega paid off when the Saints getting 4 points won outright 35-34. It was the second week in a row that the Bolts blew a game late.
Ellis was ecstatic after North Carolina won on a walk off 54 yard FG to beat FSU 37-35. We were happy for him but his claim that he would have made that FG back in the day was a bit much.
And the critics have started crawling out of the sewer with the Doofus struggling. Ellis wanted to know why I didn't take the Heels getting 10.0 Good point. I've been an idiot in laying a ton of points and FSU had gotten past a bounce back game in week 4. In week 3 they got destroyed by Louisville. In week 4 the Noles took it out on South Florida. I should have seen them coming out a little flatter in week 5. It's an angle I'm going to look at strongly going forward.
The Wolfman pointed out that Penn State's OT win over Minnesota kept him out of the death spiral. Lets see what happens this week when they host Maryland.
And it was a game where I got a break when they don't kick the PAT. The Goofers kicked a FG to go ahead 26-23. When PSU countered with a TD the won 29-26 ending in a push.
It's exactly one month until the GO JUMBO trip. Time to make those flights if you haven't already. If you are driving like Joe though, you have plenty of time
