The Doofus was up in Northern Michigan last weekend for a wedding
and family reunion. Problem was that the wedding started at the same time as MSU Notre Dame game. But with two thumbs up from the groom - as soon as the reception started I popped out my laptop, turned on the GenieGo and fired up the game. The bride asked that we turn it off during the blessing – but other than that it was game on!
For most of the night, the guys were huddled around our table. The DJ was an especially big fan. Wedding was great, too bad the game sucked. Spartans got screwed by some incompetent refs.
And while the booze was flowing and the Doofus was busting his
best moves on the dance floor (much to the amusement of a guffawing Mrs. Doofus) the Mega Bets had a pretty good weekend going 1-0-1 with:
Week 4 Recap:
Mizzou -2.0 @ Indiana – Sometimes Vegas just hands out money. No way should this spread been this close. The Tigers just plain rolled for 623 yards of offense through what Indiana calls a defense. Mizzou sprinted out to a 38-14 lead and then put it into cruise control. Indiana got a TD with 10 seconds left
San Diego +3.0 @ Tennessee – Another week another victory snatched in the last minute. San Diego led the whole game but blew it when they dropped a game clinching INT on the Titans last drive. Tennessee
then scored a TD with 15 seconds left. Crap!
The Bolts blew several other opportunities to get the win including a holding call as they were running out the clock late in the fourth quarter and a bizarre series where Charger WR Eddie Royal scored a TD only to have it wiped out by offensive interference (they still call that in the NFL? They certainly don’t against Notre Dame – that’s for sure). Philip Rivers then gets an unsportsmanlike setting up a second and goal at the 25. Final score Titans 20 Bolts 17 Tie
My inventory of “You owe me” just got bigger. Hopefully I cash them in in Vegas.
With some confidence back after an undefeated weekend I’ll ramp things back up with:

Week 5 Mega Bets
Oklahoma State -19.0 @ West Virginia - OK I’ll try the Pokes again. I got burned by a last minute UTSA meaningless TD in week 2 but - West Virginia is in free fall. Last week they didn’t even show up against Maryland – falling 37-0. Frosh WVU QB Ford Childress was pathetic throwing for 46 yards on 26 attempts. He’ll have a tougher time against a stout OSU pass defense .
Meanwhile, OSU is also rested coming off a bye and looking to put up a ton of points against their former OC Dana Holgersen. Last year Okie State blasted a reeling ‘Neer squad 55-34. Could be even worse this year. And here’s a stat for ya – OSU is 34-8 against the spread when giving 5-24 points. WVU? Try 2-9 Against the spread in Morgantown.
Oklahoma -3.0 @ Notre Dame – I like taking better teams in revenge matchups. Notre Dame’s march the national championship game took off when they upset Oklahoma last year. That won’t happen this year as the Domer defense is a pale imitation of last years.
Oklahoma’s defense looks like the real deal this year though ranking 20th overall. Their 18th ranked run defense will force Notre Dame to rely on Tommy Rees. He’s broken last year’s habit of throwing picks. It will return this week.
The Sooners will be well rested coming off a bye week and have been superb against non-conference foes going 8-3 against the spread. The Domers at home are 1-5-1 ATS.
Wyoming -11.0 @ Texas State – Wyoming has turned up the offense. They are averaging 44 points per game ranking 5th in yards and 21st in points on offense. Texas State is 2-1 but it’s a mirage. They beat a pathetic Southern Miss and even worse Prairie View A&M. When facing some real competition they got trounced by Texas Tech 33-7 despite getting 3 picks. The Cowboys will get up early on some bombs and forcing the Bobcats to the air where the suck ranking 115th overall through the air.
Arizona @ Tampa Bay Under 41.0 – These teams are relying on their defenses to stay in games. Tampa Bay
has 12 sacks on the season as the addition of Derrelle Revis has solidified the pass defense.
Tampa Bay has benched the inept Josh Freeman going with rookie 3rd round pick Mike Glennon at QB. If you are a 3rd round pick at QB you’re not expected to play meaningful minutes. At best they hope you might become a quality backup. Glennon isn’t likely to become a quality backup let alone a starter. The Bucs will be forced to try and run the ball against the 3rd best rush defense.
Tampa Bay has gone 7 straight on the under – make it 8.
I’m going to try some Mini Megas this week with:
Toledo +2.5 @ Bowling Green – Toledo hung tough against Missouri and Florida while Bowling Green was
blown out by Indiana. The better team is getting points, Toledo is 8-1 as a road dog.
LSU +3.0 @ Georgia – The offenses are about equal but LSU’s defense is better. Another better team getting
points. LSU doesn’t often get points but is 3-1 ATS when the do.
Ole Miss +16.0 @ Bama – Should be a relatively high scoring game. Bama’s defense is not up to its
usual standards. The Rebs will match scores and hang around – keeping it within 2 TDS. Mississippi has covered their last four trips to Tuscaloosa while Saban is 2-6 as a home favorite.
And the Sheriff of Malibu took some time off chasing football fugitives – coming up with these excellent picks:
Cal @ Oregon. Over 84.0 - The Sheriff likes the OVER in this one, even at this huge number (it opened at
80). Cal has one of the worst defenses in the country – Oregon probably the best offense. You do the math. Cal is going to get stomped, but if young Jared Goff can score 34 against Ohio State, he can put up some numbers
against the Ducks, too.
Arizona State -6.0 vs. USC. The Sun Devils showed a lot heart in coming back against Stanford last week in
Palo Alto. USC doesn’t even know how to spell heart. USC will be 0-2 in the PAC-12 after this game and
well on its way to the PAC-12 South basement.
Washington -10.0 vs. Arizona. I think the Huskies are for real this year. They might even be good enough to challenge Oregon and Stanford for the PAC-12 North title. They are certainly good enough to cover
this number against a 3-0 Arizona team that hasn’t played anyone yet.
