Wow, Manti Te’o - no matter how this plays out he looks bad. Either he is a total naïf or a conniving SOB. And when the NFL teams go behind closed doors and ask which would they rather have – you can be sure it’s the conniving SOB. Look how it helped Ray Lewis. My Girl Friend is dead??
It’s down to the final four in the NFL. Three teams were here last year – New England, San Francisco and Baltimore and one is a newcomer – Atlanta. The defending champs, the New York Football Giants are the only ones not to come back.
The New England Baltimore game is a repeat form last year. In that game Lee Evans dropped a game winning touchdown and Billy Cundiff missed a chip shot FG that would have sent the game into OT. Not surprisingly neither play is on the team this year.
Meanwhile, in the Georgia Dome – the Falcons finally got the monkey off their bback and won a playoff game. After blowing a 20 point fourth quarter lead they kicked a FG to get the win (but not the cover) over Seattle.
San Francisco comes in off the heels of a record rushing day by a quarterback when Colin Kaepernick gashed Green Bay for 181 yards. Add in the 263 yards passing and Kaepernick was credited with 444 total yards.
But before I make this weeks picks – a caution – I have gone a pathethic 2-6 picking the playoffs and 0-2 in the Mega Bets including last weeks miss with
Week 19 Recap:
Denver -9.0 vs Baltimore – Chris hosted the second day of NFL action at the Outdoor Ampitheatre (Mrs. Doofus was away and I took the opportunit to host the first day’s action on the Doofus deck) As we settled in for an afternoon of dirty martinis I was certain that the bad Joe Flacco would finaly show up against the Broncos. No such luck - the good one keeps coming to town. With the Ravens offensive line keeping Flacco upright (he was sacked only in the game) he had all day to survey the field. He kept going deep connecting for 331 yards (averaging an incredible 9.7 yards per catch). But it was a late one that killed me.
Ahead 35-28, Denver got the ball back with 3 minute left. I figured – all right Peyton, go down get a FG and put this game away (and by the way get me the cover). But it was not to be – they got he ball to their 47 and the clock down to 1 minute and punted. Crap – well at least hold on and get the win.
But that was not to be either – in the absolute worst prevent defense ever Flacco heaves the ball for a 70 yard touchdown. The DB made a putrid attempt to knock down the pass letting the receiver get behind him while the safety totally misplayed the coverage. It was horrible horrible coverage.
The game went into overtime and then double overtime before the Ravens kicked a 47 yard FG to win 38-35 LOSS
So with everyone fully warned here is the
WEEK 20 MEGA BET
I’m not going to jinx the Falcons and I am worried about their ability to stop running QBs - Cam and Russell combined for 887 yards passing, 6 TDs, 1 pick and 262 yards rushing in two games. And I’m not about to pick against Joe Flacco only for him to have another great day so I’m going to go with
New England vs Baltimore over 49.5 – OK Joe have another great game – I need it this time. Brady has been on fire again this year. Thanks to an improved offensive line that has only allowed 16 sacks going back to week 6 , Brady has thrown for 4,827 yards 34 TDs and only 8 picks. Last week he destroyed Houston throwing for 3 TDs and 0 picks. He’ll get his points against a rejuvenated Ravens defense. The Pats have gone over 7 times in nine home games.
So it will come down to whether the good Joe Flacco shows up again. NE defensive back Aqib Talib has been a surprising shut down corner all year. Flacco didn’t complete many last week (he was 18-34) but when he did they were deep. And after Baltimore fired OC Cam Cameron late in the season they went back to featuring forgotten RB Ray Rice. Rice has responded with over 100 yards rushing in both playoff games.
Conditions are going to be cold with temperatures in the mid to low 30’s gusty winds and wind chill at kickoff of 27 degrees and falling. Most books have the over around 51.5 but our favorite LVH sports book is going with 49.5. I’ll go with that line
