The trip to beach Command was a grand old time. Just grand. Mr and Mrs Chris hosted the gang and everyone had a blast. Plenty of beach roaming, pool action, Mr H cleaning up in ping pong, and somewhere amongst all the adult beverages and cigars, some football was watched.
In the category of don’t overreact but….here’s some takeaways from week 1.
USC QB JT Daniels suffered a torn ACL and is out for the season. If the season gets derailed Urban is just waiting in the press box to take over.
Willie Taggert’s hot seat also went up a few more notches after blowing 31-13 lead and losing 36-31. The Broncos were the better team, they were just sleepwalking with the start time moved up to noon ET, 10:00 MT.
Where are those SEC..SEC chants now? Memphis beat Ole Miss (even more embarrassing – the Tigers were favored), Wyoming dropped Mizzou (good call by the Sheriff) North Carolina came back from a 20-9 deficit to upset South Carolina 24-20 (nice Macarena by Mack Brown after the game) and my favorite, Georgia State 38 Tennessee 30. The Panthers were 2-10 last year and the next time they beat a Power 5 team it will be only their second.
The SEC did get a bit of redemption when Auburn’s freshman Bo Nix threw a TD pass with 9 seconds to go to beat Oregon 27-21. Easily the best game of the weekend.

That’s Purdue hoping fans you are looking the SEC’s way after they blew a 17 lead in losing to Nevada.
Florida 24 Miami (FL) 20 – Is the Cane defense that good again or was it another disappointing game by the SEC. Not sure yet. Two story lines to watch.
Virginia solidified their front runner status in the ACC Coastal with a convincing 30-14 win over Pitt.
Army only scored 14 points against Rice?
Trevor Lawrence may get all the pub but RB Travis Etienne looked fantastic against Georgia Tech for 205 yards and 3 scores. Clemson hasn’t lost a beat from last year.
Don’t let the 52-14 score fool you though. The Jacket defense looked pretty solid. Two GT turnovers in the red zone killed them. And when the defense picked off a pass, Trevor Lawrence made a huge tackle to save a TD. The offense couldn’t punch it in from the 2. It’s struggling in moving on from the option attack. But the defense will keep Tech in games.
Jalen Hurts looks like the real deal at Oklahoma too. The defense is a little better. That’s all the Sooners need. After Iowa State needed triple OT to beat Northern Iowa, the Big 12 championship looks to come down to the Red River Shootout.
With Oklahoma, Alabama, Clemson and Georgia all rolling big, the CFP may already be taking shape.
About that Iowa State game - don't overreact when FBS teams struggle with good FCS teams. Happens every year. Minnesota and West Virginia fans, you can breathe now.
For all the close games with the FCS, the FBS did go 39-1. The 1?, that would be Western Kentucky. The Hilltoppers used to be a good, real good Sun belt team. Not any more.
And finally, State’s defense looks even better than last year. Wish I could say the same about the offense. I hope another phenomenal CFP quality Spartan defense is wasted by the offense again this year. We’re starting to look like the Lions wasting the careers of Barry Sanders, Megatron, Stafford….

The picks weren't wasted though. The Doofus went 2-1 on the Mega Bets and 2-0 on the Mini Megas for a profitable weekend.
The Sheriff went 2-1 with his picks too. We are off to a nice start.
Week 2 can often be one of the hardest as you tend to overreact to week 1
Miami (FL) -4.5 @ North Carolina - Just because UNC beat South Carolina, it doesn't make them a good team. The Cocks were leading by 20-9 going into the fourth quarter and blew it. South Carolina is quirky that way.
Up until the 4th quarter, UNC frosh QB Sam Howell was under pressure as the OL was having difficulty with the Cock pass rush. Miami's is much better.
Miami's RB DeeJay Dallas is an explosive player. Against Florida, He ran for 94 yards and a touchdown on just 11 carries. He was also a weaponin the passing game with four receptions for 37 yards. Look for Miami OC Dan Enos to get him more touches on Saturday.
One person who will be fired up is HC Manny Diaz. He was Mack Brown's DC at Texas in 2011 and 2012. Brown fired him after the Longhorns gave up 550 yards rushing to BYU in September 2013.
Miami has had two weeks to prepare for this key game in the ACC Coastal. UNC is trying to adjust to winning. THe Canes are the superior team. UNC will lay strong early before a sell out crowd but talent will carry the game.
Investors Note: Miami (FL) is 11-4 ATS in September games.

Cincinnati +15.5 @ Ohio State - The BearCat defense is for real. Last week they held Chip Kelly and the UCLA Bruins to 8 of 26 passing with three turnovers on the day. They also held UCLA to 62 yards rushing
Meanwhile, OSU jumped to a 28-0 lead over FAU but then were outscored 21-17 the rest of the way. Cincinnati won't get down 28-0.
This is a huge game for Cincinnati with 70 players from Ohio and few getting interest from the Buck Nuts - they will have a Spartan sized chip on their shoulders.
UC head coach Luke Fickell knows a thing or two about Ohio State, he was the former Buckeye head man for a year.
This is going to be a close exciting game.

The NFL kicks off this week so here's the first pick of the 100th season of pro football
Cincinnati +2.5 vs LA Rams - Cam is healthy and the Panthers have strengthened their OL. Meanwhile, the Rams DL is worse with the loss of Ndamukong Suh.
Rams QB Jared Goff is over rated. He put up great stats against lousy teams but when playing good defenses like the Bears Eagles and Patriots he threw six picks zero TDs and completed a meager 54.8% of passes. I can still see him playing with that deer in the headlights look in the Super Bowl
The Pat Time Zone Angle is in play. LA is playing a 1:00 ET game. The wrong team is favored. Panthers win outright.

I'll lay some Mini Megas too on:
Texas +6.5 vs LSU - This is a pure streak bet. Texas HC Tom Herman is 13-2 ATS as an underdog. LSU is 2-6 ATS outside the SEC.
Syracuse +1.5 vs Maryland - Dino Babers is getting points against Mike Locksley? I'll take that.
For this week's Point Whore Parlay I'll go with:
Central Michigan +35.0 @ Wisconsin
New Mexico State +55.0 @ Alabama
Liberty +13.5 @ UL Lafayette
The Sheriff likes
Fresno St (+3) vs Minnesota. The Bulldogs are tough as nails with a promising young QB named Jorge Reyna. Jeff Tedford’s boys will pull off the upset Saturday night.
North Carolina (+4.5) vs Miami (Fla). The Sheriff has no love for Mac Brown but he has to admit to being impressed with the Tar Heel’s victory over South Carolina and their true freshman QB Sam Howell. North Carolina will be 2-0 after Saturday.
Doofus: I guess we will agree to disagree on this one.
Cal (+14) @ Washington. The Golden Bears had the best defense in the PAC-12 last year and return most of that stellar unit this year. That tough D will cover this number.
Honorable Mention – Army (+22.5) vs Michigan. The Sheriff doesn’t want to jinx it but here’s hoping for not only a cover but a glorious upset in the Big House. Go Army!
