I sent the weekend at a nice B&B in the mountains on an anniversary trip with Mrs. Doofus. It was a romantic time – beautiful scenery, some nice wine, a little dinner and of course – football!
With the Mrs. by my side and some Knob Creek in my glass, we watched some great games including a near comeback win by Georgia (I still got the cover) and the same with Georgia Tech (also another cover).
Almost made me forget that I had my first losing Mega Bet losing weekend since week 1. Guess I was a little distracted by other things….
Week 14 Mega Bets
Oklahoma State -4.5 @ Baylor – This one started out looking like it might be one of the worst picks of the year as Baylor jumped to an early 24-3 lead to start the second quarter. But with two high powered offenses going at it a 21 point lead is next to nothing. Sure enough, by the start of the fourth quarter the lead was down to 7 at 34-27 Baylor. Baylor scored a TD and OSU got within 7 again with 1:16 left. I still had a chance. If the Cowboys got the onside and scored they could force OT and get the cover then. No such luck. The Bears recovered the onside and two victory formations later I had the first Mega Bet loss of the weekend. LOSS
Da Bears were stunned last week! With the Mrs. by my side and some Knob Creek in my glass, we watched some great games including a near comeback win by Georgia (I still got the cover) and the same with Georgia Tech (also another cover).

Seattle +3.5 @ Chicago – I figured this would be a FG game. Close – in a wild finish Seattle QB Russell Wilson led the Seahawks on a beautiful 97 yard TD drive to go up 17-14 with 24 seconds left. Normally that should be enough to get the win but Chicago threw a 56 yard bomb to WR Brandon Marshall (geez Seattle – who did you think they were going to throw to?) to set up a walk off tying FG.
In OT, Seattle was not going to let Chicago have the ball. They marched to the Bear 14 and threw a pass to Golden Tate that was jostled as he came down. As Tater lay sprawled on the field getting a concussion test the refs reviewed the play. Golden walked off the field (he’s OK) and the play stood as called – TD WIN
By the way – keep on eye on the Bears injuries. LB Brian Urlacher and CB Tim Jennings were hurt on the winning drive. Add to that WR Earl Bennett, DB Chris Conte and OL Chris Spencer who were hurt during the game and more importantly Devin Hester who didn’t suit up and the Bears are a hurting bunch.
Carolina -3.0 @ Kansas City – Man, who would have thought the old murder suicide angle would come into play. Not me when I made the pick. But as Jamie said – that’s what we pay you for – to anticipate these things. Very true – for a limited time all those asking for a refund can get double their money back!
Vegas didn’t know what to make of the situation either. Would the Chiefs be demoralized or come out fired up. Eventually they picked demoralized as the spread grew to a hefty 6.5 by kickoff.
Vegas was wrong. The Chiefs played inspired ball. They took the opening possession on a 74 yd TD drive. The normally awful Brady Quinn had a pretty good game too going 19-23 for 201 yards and 2 TDs. And with the game on the line late on the fourth quarter and KC holding on to a narrow 24-21 lead, he led them on a clock crunching 3 minute drive and FG to ice the game 27-21 LOSS
That brings the Mega Bet record to 26-15
The Mini Megas meanwhile went 2-1 again as:
Cleveland -1.5 @ Oakland – Oakland showed that they really are just playing out the string. They let a sub par QB Brandon Weeden go all pro on them giving up 364 yards through the air. "We can't stop the run, we can't stop the pass," said Raiders CB Michael Huff after the game. That’s true.
Nursing a 13-10 with 9 minutes left, Weeden led them on a 6 minute 94 yard game clinching TD to go up 20-10. Oakland scored a meaningless TD late to close the gap to 20-17 but no matter – I got the cover WIN
Jacksonville +6.0 @ Buffalo – Jax QB Chad Henne returned to awful quicker than I expected. He was 19 for 42, lost a fumble and threw a game ending pick. Jacksonville actually led 10-7 early in the seconds quarter but then it was all Buffalo as they reeled off 27 straight points going on to win 34-18. Keep an eye on the bills injuries too as WR Stephen Jackson and two OL didn’t finish the game LOSS
Pitt -6.0 @ South Florida – The Panthers defense was outstanding – forcing turnovers on the first three and 1 TD in a 27-3 rout and holding the Bulls to 117 total yards. Easiest win by far of the weekend WIN
The Mini Megas are now 11-4 for the season.
The college football head coaching carousel continues to spin. And as some positions get filled it generates new openings. New HCs were named at Auburn (Malzahn from Arkansas State), Arkansas (Bielema from Wisconsin),Tennessee (Jones from Cincinnati), Cal (Dykes from La Tech), Purdue (Hazell from Kent State), Boston College (Addazio from Tempe) and South Florida (Taggert from Western Kentucky). Stay tuned.
Only one college game this week as Navy takes on Army. I’ll be getting underneath Dwinks skin again this year as I root for the Middies. The spread looks about right at Navy -6.5 so I’ll pass on taking a Mega Bet on that game but I will on:
Week 15 Mega Bets
Miami +10.0 @ San Francisco – The love fest with SF QB Colin Kaepernick has gotten out of hand. This line is way too big. Miami was able to pressure Brady last week recording 4 sacks. SF will be looking ahead to matchups with New England and Seattle and coast through a low scoring affair.
Pittsburgh -7.0 vs San Diego – San Diego can’t keep Phil Rivers upright. Not that it matter – Rivers sucks. The Bolts used to make late season surges to make the playoffs. Not this year. With no passing or running game the Bolts are going to struggle in Heinz field. Add the Pat time zone angle (game time is 1:00) and the Steelers will roll with a partially healthy big Ben under center.
Houston +3.5 @ New England – Houston is just slightly better than New England right now – primarily because of their better defense. JJ Watts was watching how Miami got to Brady last week and is licking his chops. This is another of those FG games. I like getting 3.5
No Mini Megas this week
Coming soon is the Bowl Preview and Confidence picks
And RIP Dave Brubeck and why not Take 5 while you wait for the A Train
