Might be why ND seemed to be runnng in reverse last week
Another good time on the Doofus Deck last Saturday. I told Mrs Doofus that we would only be watching the noon games but since she was away the party lasted into the late night. I paid the price the next day but well worth it!
The Doofus Deck TV tower survived another shakedown. Chris arrived without either his flaming boots or a cable box so we were limited to only three games at a time. No matter - we survived. Some nice single malt helped ease the pain.
And there was a lot of hooting and hollering going on! Bruce and I were pounding on Ellis as Georgia Tech rolled his Heels. We almost had a doubly good time until Northwestern fell apart in the last seconds. Ahead by 3 points with only 18 seconds left, Michigan threw a bomb to the 9 and kicked a tying FG. The stunned Wildcats then blew it in OT losing 38-31. Crap
Dooby and Dwink were going at it as Rutgers hosted Army. Dwink was really miffed when I told him – not only was I rooting for the Scarlet Knights but I needed the 17 point cover too. They did. Nice. Sorry Dwink. Root for a better team.
And then as night fell - the really big games came on including two Mega Bet games -
Notre Dame -18.5 @ Boston College – Man, this was a frustrating game. Needing style points to get into the BCS championship game, ND just ground down BC. After the opening Irish drive of the second half, the Irish only had had the ball four times, scoring three TDs and coughing up a fumble. By then they were leading 21-3, just under the 18.5 spread but things were looking good. Then they took their foot off the gas. They lacked the killer instinct. Their next four drives went punt, fumble, punt, punt. The last two drives stalled in BC territory. BC got a FG in the fourth quarter to close the gap to 21-6 still losing but costing me the cover. Damn Irish. LOSS
Texas A&M +13.5 @ Bama – Back to back classic games for the Tide. A&M came out on fire scoring TDs on their first three drives to take a 20-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. Bama slowly worked their way back into the game and trailed 20-17 at the end of the third quarter – setting up another great finish. The Aggies got their mojo back and kicked a 29 yard FG to open the fourth quarter - taking a 23-17 lead. A&M forced Bama to punt and then drove down the field again but this time missing a 37 yard FG. You knew this would come back to haunt them and it did. The Aggies forced another punt and two plays later were in the end zone for what seemed like an insurmountable 29-17 lead. Bama then hit a 54 yard bomb to cut the lead to 29-24. The Tide forced a punt and with 1:36 left in the game had it 4th and goal at the A&M 2 yard line. It looked like Bama was going to have their second miracle finish in as many weeks. But A&M picked it off to seal the victory. Exciting game unless you were getting 13.5 like the Doofus. Then it was just fun to watch the first of 2 undefeateds to lose (as predicted by the Doofus! Well, to be honest I thought A&M would cover not necessarily win but what the hell – it’s my website – I called for a Bama loss!) WIN

The Doofus is counting up the wins!!
And on Sunday -
Atlanta @ New Orleans Over 53.5 – Another undefeated went down! Actually I didn’t care who won – I just wanted points. And plenty of points were to be had. At the end of the first half, the teams had combined for 9 drives which resulted in 5 TDs, a FG, 2 punts and interception. The over was looking good! Things settled down a little bit in the second half but Atlanta opened up the fourth quarter with a TD to cut the Saints lead to 28-24 and the over was in the bag. Now I could sit back and root for an Atlanta win. They didn’t - but it didn’t matter – the Mega Bet was in the bank. New Orleans held on to win 31-27 WIN
Overall 2-1 on the Mega Bets - that brings the Mega Bet season record to 21-12!
The Mini Megas went 1-1 as:
Syracuse +1.5 vs Louisville - Syracuse shredded the overrated Louisville defense for 524 yards. Tied 10-10 after the first quarter, The Orange scored TDs on their next three possessions to take a 31-10 lead. A lead they never relinquished. Early in the fourth quarter, Syracuse had built the lead to 45-19 before coasting to a 45-26 win. The Doofus correctly predicted the second take down of an undefeated team this week (This one is true – I did call for the Syracuse win). Nice! The Orange getting small points had an easy cover. WIN
Ole Miss -2.5 vs Vanderbilt – So damn close on this one. Ole Miss looked to be in the driver’s seat when after their first drive of the 3rd quarter the led 23-6. But Vandy rallied with 2 TDs on their next three drives to cut the lead to 23-20. I still had the cover but barely. Ole Miss got a FG with just under three minutes left. Now the only way I was going to lose was with a last minute TD. And that’s exactly what happened. The Dores hit on a 26 yard TD pass with 51 seconds left to win the game and blow the cover. Rats!
Still that leaves the Mini Megas at 4-2 on the season - also very nice.
After back to back Doofus parties I will be drying out this weekend. Well kind of – I’ll be tailgating on the Flats as Georgia Tech hosts resurgent Duke. Should be a good game. And during the game I’ll be keeping an eye on scoreboard for:
Week 12 Mega Bets:
Ohio State +2.5 @ Wisconsin – This spread is an overreaction to last week’s Badger blow out of Indiana. No way Wisconsin is going to roll the Buckeye defense like they did the Hoosiers. The Bucknut run D will stuff Bucky’s run game forcing Wisky to win through the air. Backup QB Curt Phillips is not the answer. He was only able to go 4-7 and 41 yards against a woeful Indiana defense. Ohio State is coming off a bye and will be well rested. Wisconsin has only faced three good teams this year in Oregon State, Michigan State and Nebraska and lost all three. Make that 4.
Rutgers +6.0 @ Cincinnati – Another better team getting points on the road. Rutgers stout run defense will shut down the Bearcats. The Scarlet Knights have only allowed 5 running TDs all year. That will put the onus on Cincy Sr. QB Brendon Kay to win the game. Kay started his first game last week and was serviceable against Temple. Rutgers is a whole lot better on D than Temple. This should be a low scoring game with 2 good defenses going at it. If it’s a defensive struggle I like taking the points. Putting a little down on the under too.
Chicago @ San Francisco under 38.5 – This was going to be a defensive slugfest – now one or both starting QBs may be watching from the stands. Jay Cutler and Alex Smith were dinged in the head. Smith is listed as probable and Cutler as doubtful. The points are going to be at a premium Sunday night.
Going to make 3 Mini Megas this week including:
Wake Forest @ Notre Dame Under 42.0 – If it were possible to score negative points Wake would do it. The Irish D is superb. Wake’s offense is starting their 250th string QB- a former high school robotics team captain and equipment manager. Not really but the Deacons are desperate at QB. Notre Dame has chosen not to score this year - deciding to run around until they get 3-4 scores and then sit on the ball. HC Brian Kelly would rather argue to be in the MNC on Oprah than try to get in with style points.
Kent State +2.5 @ Bowling Green - Another better team getting points on the road. Kent State has the best running game in the MAC. BGSU has the best defense. The Flashes will squeak out a win and get the cover.
Central Florida +1.5 @ Tulsa – Staying with the better team getting points on the road. The Knights are the class of the CUSA. The two best teams in the CUSA go at it. CFU will ride their defense to victory.
The Point Whore Parlay makes a return this week with:
Indiana +17.5 @ Penn State
Stanford +20.5 @ Oregon
Minnesota +20 @ Nebraska
And the Sheriff of Malibu has some picks too
I know most of the SEC has a “bye” this week (Wofford, Jacksonville State, Georgia Southern, c’mon), but there are some great games in the PAC-12 so I wanted to make some picks.
UCLA + 3 ½ over USC. Can’t believe Vegas is nice enough to give me points – Bruins win outright. I also like the Over (63 ½) – both offenses will light it up. Should be the game of the week.
Oregon – 20.5 over Stanford. Stanford is good but the Oregon offense is unstoppable. Especially in Eugene.
GT -13 ½ over Duke. I always like the Yellowjackets at home. The Dukies will head back inside for the start of basketball season.
