The Doofus has been hard at work updating the Big Book of Guesses
On Thursday, the Sax Man and Jason come to Doofus Manor all excited about the Falcons. They had even been talking about buying Falcon season tickets. And when the NFL schedule was released the talk got even stronger – and louder.
The Falcon got a great set up. They have a Sunday night game (versus the Pats), a Thursday night game (Saints!) and a Monday night game (Bills). And Seattle comes to town. The Georgia Dome is
within walking distance of Georgia Tech and selling one of those games could cover half the cost of the season tickets.
Oh, the conversation (and the Knob Creek) was flowing and the excitement was growing. But like all denizens of the deck – it was all talk and no action. As of today still no tickets have been bought.
And while they were sleeping off a good night of football talk and libations, the Doofus has been hard at work compiling the NFL schedule with times and records against the spread into the 2013 NFL Bettors Guide!

Then the debate started with who has the toughest schedule. For all the talk about scheduling parity (having the best teams play stronger schedules and the weakest the easier) in reality, of the 16 games only two are up in the air. There are six games within your division while eight games are fixed due to rotating interdivisional play. Each year the NFL schedules each division against one division within your conference and one division in the other conference. That doesn’t leave Roger Goodell much room to play with.
That’s why each year it seems as though a lousy team ends up with a tough schedule. They start out by not playing themselves (obviously) within their own division while they share 8 games with their divisional superiors.
Here is a good ranking and recap of the schedule difficulty. Toughest Schedules
And no sooner than the NFL released their schedule – our favorite sports book the LVH released the opening lines for week 1. Nice.
Too early to get a feel for the spreads but here is one interesting tidbit. Over the last 13 years the loser in the Super Bowl is 1-12 against the spread in week one. This year that would be San Francisco hosting Green Bay. The Niners are giving 5.5. I kinda like the Cheese Heads with that many points.
Here are all the opening day spreads with lots of time to move with free agency still in play and of course the draft next Thursday!

And speaking of trivia – what do Ed Reed, Dallas Clark, Steven Jackson, Aaron Rodgers, Brandon Meriweather, Chris Johnson and Dez Bryant all have in common?
Answer – they were all the 24th pick in the draft. Brian Resutek of the Wall Street Journal Crunched the Numbers and found that the 24th pick has been the best pick since 2002. With 23 Pro Bowls for the 24th pick it easily outdistanced the first pick. And who has the 24th pick this year? Indianapolis – last years number one pick team.
And if history and the mock drafters are correct then the next super star in the NFL is going to be either Eric Reid Safety LSU, Cordarrelle Patterson WR Tenn, Cornellius “Tank”Carradine DE FSU or Datone Jones DE UCLA.

On NFL draft night, I’ll be on
Dobby’s deck enjoying an Irish Whiskey tasting hosted by the local wine shoppe.
Chris and I have volunteered to wire his deck so we can watch the draft at the same time. Should be a great evening!
And if you can't wait for Labor Day to get your football betting going here are some prop bets on the NFL draft Draft day bets
And finally a toast to Pat Summerall who passed away this week. His low key delivery allowed the center of action to be the game and not the announcer. When his memorable voice came on you knew that the big game was getting ready to kick off. Sundays will never be the same.
