Relentless. That’s what was on the back of the Spartan helmets. For all the hype videos and uniform reveals it was the one word tucked where you you might have noticed, that made all the difference.
It was a term that was attributed to the Wolverines and their running game coming into the game. They kept pounding away at opponents until the finally submitted in the fourth quarter. But that was not they way it played out in this game.
In fact, much of how the game was supposed to play out didn’t quite happen. Michigan was supposed to grind away and then hit underneath routes. State was going to stop the run and force QB McNamara to beat them with his arm.

State was supposed to have the better passing game with Thorne throwing to Reed and Nailor. Yet Thorne two picks in the first quarter putting the Spartans in a two score hole early on.
But State was relentless. They kept chopping wood, not letting early set backs get in their way.
Relentless. State never went away from the run game like Michigan did. K9 secured, not only invite to New York, but the aisle seat, with his 5 TDs and 197 yards, the most ever by a Spartan against Michigan.

Relentless. Thorne never gave up on the pass. He matched K9 in yardage, hit timely passes and threw no more picks.
Relentless. While State coaching staff stuck to their game plan and a balanced offense, the Michigan staff panicked. The defense couldn’t get players onto the field resulting in numerous penalties.
The offense, despite McNamara’s huge day inexplicably changed QBs. McCarthy’s last two drives ended in a fumble and an interception.
