My bracket went down in flames. It’s only the first weekend and it’s already a disaster. I can’t remember the last time I had such a bad start.
The very first night I lost a Final Four pick when Iowa State got upset. Then on Saturday my second Final Four pick went down with Villanova.
No doubt, upsets were the way to go this year but even my upsets lost.
In some ways though it’s kind of liberating though. I can root for whomever I want. No need to worry about the brackets.
I arrived at Ellis’ deck free to root for all the underdogs and any team in MSU’s path to the Final Four.
We had shamed Ellis into hosting Saturday. He got the hint and put on a great outing.
JB arrived fresh from a Bourbon tour in Kentucky. He brought over a bottle of Buffalo Trace and a cigar shaped ornament for the Ellis Christmas tree. We all had suggestions on where to place it. Most figured Mrs. Ellis would force it to the back of the tree. I was pushing Ellis to place it so that the Angel on top was giving it a light.
Chris brought over a second TV so we could watch all the games plus a little golf and “I still hate Laettner”. And we still do. Ellis’ Tar Heel Carolina blue blood was getting the best of him while watching so we had him change the channel before he blew a gasket.

And what great games so far this year. Five one point games on the first night set a tourney record – including one which knocked out Iowa State. The record for the entire tourney is six. That should be broken this year.
The ACC has held up very well. Only one team has been bounced (MSU beating Virginia, of course). UNC and NC State should be next versus Wisconsin and Louisville respectively.
Kansas has been avoiding in state rival Wichita State for years. When the Shockers finally got their chance they crushed the Chicken Hawks 78-65. That brought quite a few cheers from the deck. Next up – Notre Dame, should be one of the better Sweet 16 games. Shock ‘em!
I found myself rooting for Duke, which almost got me thrown off the deck. I may hate Laettner but I really hate that cheating scum bag Bill Frieder. The world will return to normal though when I root for Utah over Duke.
Things won’t be easy watching the West Virginia Kentucky game. Do you go for cheatin’ John Calipari or the drunken douche Bob Huggins. I guess you can hope that both teams get lost on their way to the mistake by the lake, Cleveland, and both forfeit.
Their won’t be any doubt on who to root for Friday night. State may be a 7 seed but Izzo has the team peaking at just the right time (again). They are favored over 3 seed Oklahoma and are now seen as a favorite to make the Final Four. Seems just a few weeks ago that they were a bubble team.
And Spartan Nation is crowing that MSU is the first school in NCAA history to win 4 straight bowl games and make 4 straight sweet 16’s. Heady times along the old Red Cedar.
