The Bowl Mega Bets got back on a winning track as UCLA routed Va Tech 42-12. QB Brett Hundley obliterated the 4th ranked Hokie defense – passing for 226 yards and running for another 161. Meanwhile, Va Tech QB Logan Thomas’ 2 year slide down the draft chart finally hit rock bottom. He was 3 for 11 yards passing for an anemic 49 yards before getting knocked out of the game in the second quarter.
Va Tech tied the game at 7-7 midway through the first quarter and then it was all Bruins as the reeled off 35 points to a FG and safety for Va Tech. WIN
Today I am going to go with:
Ohio State vs Clemson over 69.0 – Coming into the bowl season I was looking to take Ohio State and give the points. But now it looks like we are going into the annual upset phase of bowl season. Happens every year – underdogs, even big underdogs, start beating over confident favored teams. This year, so far, every BCS game the
underdog has not only covered – but won outright. In two of the games a double digit dog won.
Central Florida was a 17 point dog and won 52-42. That was an easy pick. UCF has been a tough out all year- just ask Louisville and South Carolina.
Oklahoma trounced Bama 45-31 as a 16 point dog. The SEC is not all that. I hope they start turning down the hype at ESPN someday. Pisses me off that the SEC gets an automatic pass to the National Championship game. Bring on
the playoffs but let’s not start allocating two spots to the SEC.
And of course MSU beat Stanford 24-20 while getting 6.5. More on that game and days events to come!!
So with all those favorites falling I’m not about to take the Bucknuts to cover - even if the spread is a mere 3 points. Nope – I’m going to take the more fun bet – the over.
Ohio State - for all the talk about nearly being in the championship game - has a big flaw. Their defense is leaking and leaking badly. A pedestrian Michigan offense was able to rack up 41 points while MSU’s pound and ground put up 34 on the scarlet and grey. Clemson has the ability to put up even more behind QB Tajh Boyd and WR Sammie Watkins.
OSU DB Bradley Roby has been overrated all season and now is expected to sit this one out with a knee injury. DE Noah Spence is sitting this one out too after being suspended. All of which means that the Boyd should have plenty of time to pick apart the sub par OSU defense.
And while the Bucknuts have been AWOL on defense the offense has been humming along nicely. The tandem of QB Braxton Miller and RB Carlos Hyde gave MSU’s #1 defense all it could handle in the BIG championship game.
Meanwhile Clemson’s defense just gave up 31 points each to South Carolina and Georgia Tech. OSU should do better than that.
I’ll take the over with each team racking up 40 points in a shoot out.
