You woke up Sunday figuring you would hear that there was a new coach at Auburn after they blew a 17-0 lead, at home, to LSU. Somewhat suprisngly, Harsin is still around.
You weren’t surprised when Karl Dorrell was launched at Colorado. He was 8-15 overall and started the season 0-5 with all the losses by double digits.
The long term slide for the Buffs is sad really. In 1998, Colorado had the third most players in the NFL, trailing only Notre Dame and Florida State. Now they have 11 players playing on Sunday. One fewer than….Rutgers.
Colorado also hasn’t had back-to-back winning seasons in almost 20 years, dating back to 2004-05. There’s been just one Top 25 season in the past 20 years, finishing No. 17 in 2016.
You weren’t just surprised, you were stunned with the news out of Madison. Paul Chryst was fired.
Chryst went 52-16 (34-10 in Big Ten play) in his first five seasons before dropping to 15-10 (9-8 Big Ten) the last two-plus seasons. He won three Big Ten West titles, made three New Year’s Six bowl game appearances (winning two) and won the conference’s coach of the year award twice. He bled Bucky red, spending 33 of his 56 years of life as either a Madison native, a Wisconsin quarterback or a Badgers assistant coach.

And he gets fired after a 2-3 start? Were they that afraid that DC and now HC John Leonhard was going to bolt? He just turned down being DC at the Packers. He seemed happy.
Were they afraid of the increased competition from Minnesota? They got upset by Purdue (costing me a parlay dammit).
Iowa? They are even more inept offensively this year than normal,
Northwestern has completed imploded.
Is it because Big Butt Bielema came back home and put a beat down on you in a Buckyesque kind of way? Pretty short sighted if you ask me. Illinois looks good once every generation and then goes back to being Illinois.
Are you afraid of USC and UCLA coming to the Big 10 west? I can’t wait for those two glamorous sunshine programs to waltz into a refurbished Camp Randall (yes, Bucky is dropping some coin into the facilities) with a cold snow squall coming off Lake Mendota in late November.

Please don’t go SEC on me Wisconsin, taking out head coaches at the hint of a struggle. I hope Leonhard has success and I hope he keeps Wisconsin, Wisconsin (he should) but Chryst deserved better. Perhaps move him into a program ambassador the way State did with Dantonio, not a mid season firing.
Remember about a year ago when Jimbo beat $aban and then later saying Nick bought his 2022 recruiting class? We all looked up the schedule and said, “Oct 8, Oooh that will be fun!.”
Well, Oct. 8 is this weekend, and ESPN’s College GameDay is headed to … Kansas
It’s the first time ever, Kansas has a chance to see Lee put on the mascot head, as the Jayhawks were one of eight Power 5 teams to have never hosted GameDay. Trivia question – who are the remaining seven Power 5 programs still remaining to host Game Day? Answer below.
Kansas got to 4-0 by lighting up the scoreboard like a Christmas tree. But it was the defense that stopped Iowa State 14-11 that got the the Fighting Leipold’s got to 5-0.
I told you to get on the Jayhawk bandwagon. You dutifully did. Now there’s another Speedwagon chasing them down.
Sonny Dykes moved across town from SMU to TCU and brought his explosive offense with him. It’s not like Gary Patterson left the cupboard bare at TCU. The Horny Toads have consistently recruited in the Top 3 in the Big 12. They just needed someone to light a fire under the program.
TCU dominated Oklahoma 55-24 last weekend. I have my backup bandwagon ready to go. I’ll jump on whichever teams wins on Saturday.

The winner of the game gets the inside track to face another team I’ll be betting on as the season progresses. #9 Oklahoma State keeps rolling through the Big 12, stopping into Waco and trucking No. 16 Baylor 36-25. I’ve been worried that the Pokes defense was slipping but it grabbed two picks and shut out the Bears in the fourth quarter to seal the win (and a nice money line win for me)
Of course, starting off the second half with this really helped

By the way, do you think either Texas or Oklahoma is ready to compete in the SEC? Yeah, me neither.
It seems like Dorian Thompson-Robinson has been around for forever at UCLA. After 5 years and 40 career starts, is this his breakout season?
He was a highlight reel in downing Washington 40-32. My favorite is this touchdown play
A juke so nasty the Husky defenders tackle each other.
The Sheriff has been calling on you to back the Bruins. Listen to the Sheriff.
It was exactly a year ago, Stanford upset then #3 Oregon in overtime to improve to 3-2. David Shaw’s program has won one game since, its season opener against Colgate. The Cardinal, which won three Pac-12 titles from 2012-15, is in a deeper descent than Wisconsin. Shaw has long been considered untouchable at Stanford, but what happens if the Tree goes 1-11 or 2-12?
I was a doubter. I thought that when former NFL and UCLA head coach Jim Mora went to UConn, he was just going to cash a paycheck and rack up some frequent flyer miles while pretending to recruit. UConn has been one of the nation’s worst programs for several years.
UConn was 1-40 since the middle of 2017 against FBS teams – the lone exception was a 56-35 win over UMass in 2019 – and 2-56 since 2016 against Div 1A teams. The last home win over an FBS team? 20-14 over Tulsa in 2017.
So imagine how stunned I was when the Huskies knocked off perennial bowl team and MWC powerhouse Fresno State 19-14. They held the Bulldogs to just 50 yards rushing. Big Al is smiling.
But never bet on or against UConn. Always remember the Big Al rule!.

Last week, Boise State fired offensive coordinator Tim Plough after a 27-10 loss to UTEP replacing him with Dirk Koetter. This week, Koetter’s offense scored 35 second-half points to run away from struggling San Diego State.
So Aztecs HC Brady "Hokemania" Hoke figured, why not, and fired his OC, Jeff Hecklinski. The Spaztecs have the nation’s worst passing attack. averaging just under 63 yards per game.
I came into the season doubting Bo Nix but he continues to have a solid season. In his 45-27 win over Stanford, he threw for 161 yards two TDs, no picks and actually the team in rushing with 141 rushing yards, two touchdowns, including this this 80-yard scoring dash.
Maybe it was just a one year aberration after all. QB DJ Uiagalelei is on fire. First he torches Wake Forest, no big deal there but against a top-10 NC State team, he passed for 209 yards and a TD and ran for another 73 yards and 2 TDs. Clemson just might be back.
You’ve got four good teams in the ACC Atlantic, Clemson, NC State, Wake and Florida State. The Coastal’s one Top 25 team, Pitt, just lost to Georgia Tech. Maybe mid year coaching changes can be a good thing.
OK, I told you not to worry about Georgia. They weren't focused against Kent state and the Flashers are a good MAC team. They will get back to business against a struggling Missouri. Well, maybe you should worry. Mizzou led Georgia for 56 minutes until Georgia finally went up 26-22 and held on.
The Tigers’ D-line dominated the line of scrimmage much of the night.
Bama and Arkansas had a wild one in Fayetteville. Bama stormed to a 28-0 lead only to have Arkansas rally to be down 28-23. Just when I thought I might get my 17.5 point cover after all, Bama then went full Bama in the Hogs with this run sealing the deal (and costing me a quatloo)

Jamyr Gibbs had a similar 72 yard run to put the Tide up 42-23 earlier in the 4th quarter.
The Sax Man is still mourning that Gibbs was a Jacket before transferring to Alabama during the off season.
Liberty continues to fly under the radar. They are 4-1 with the lone loss a one point defeat by then #19 Wake. Check out this TD grab
Next up for the Flames, 1-4 UMass. Should be a ton of highlight reels for Liberty in that game.
Trivia answer - what are the 7 Power 5 teams to never host GameDay? - 1 from the Pac 12 - Cal; 3 form the ACC - Duke Virginia and Syracuse; and 3 from the Big 10 - Illinois, Rutgers and Syracuse.
Every team in the SEC and the Big 12 has (or will with Kansas) hosted game Day.
Remember - Go Jumbo 2022 is October 29th at the Westgate SuperBook.
