Cure Bowl UT San Antonio +1.5 vs Troy – Now it’s time for an excellent bowl game. It’s they only bowl that feature conference champions.
Both teams finished hot down the stretch, with Troy covering every game away from home this season. Troy's only defeats were to two very good teams, losing to Ole Miss in the season opener and losing their conference opener in a narrow 32-28 decision against Appalachian State.
The #25 Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners have won ten consecutive games. They did not lose a single game in the C-USA, with their only losses to Houston and Texas.
The strengths of these teams come on different sides of the ball, with the Roadrunners having an elite offense and the Trojans countering with an attack orientated defense.
Roadrunner nation was ecstatic by the announcement that QB Frank Harris will return for 2023. Harris had his best season ever. He cut his turnover rate nearly in half while notching 31 passing TDs to just seven picks

The results were similar on the ground, cutting his fumbles in half while logging 63% of his rushing yards from scrambles. With 31 rushing attempts exceeding 10 yards, containing UTSA on third down can near be an impossible task.
UTSA is no slouch on defense either. The Roadrunners allowed just 3.3 points to opponent drives that crossed the 40-yard line, the 28th best red zone defense overall.
Troy has an outstanding running back in Kimani Vidal. The sophomore RB was especially sharp late in the season, rushing for over 200 yards in two out of his last three games, and has accumulated 1059 rushing yards on 5.1 yards per carry.
The Trojans’ defense is definitely their top strength. They easily contained their foes in conference play and only allowed more than 19 points three times all season, one of which was against Ole Miss. The Trojans stymied opposing offenses, finishing top-15 of all FBS teams in limiting ground and air explosive plays.

While the defense was the primary driver for a conference championship, the offense had an awakening in the Sun Belt title game. Slot receiver Tez Johnson leads the team in receptions, and with an average of 3.6 yards per route run, Johnson is the most explosive wide receiver in college football, ahead of bigger names like Tennessee’s Jalin Hyatt and Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison Jr.
However, a lack of a run game has stalled the offense in several games. The Trojans finished outside the top 100 in third-down conversions.
The offense consistently fell behind the chains and relied too heavily on big plays through the air. Those inefficiencies were never more present than in the red zone, where the Trojans finished outside the top 100 in touchdown rate.
The Trojans have deleted every passing attack this season but struggled against dual-threat quarterbacks. LSU’s Jayden Daniels and Liberty’s Kaidon Salter dominated the Trojans defense with zone reads and quarterback keepers, a scheme Harris is expected to run frequently.
Look for Harris to shred the Troy front seven while avoiding Martial and Steward in the passing game. the Trojans do not have the offense to keep up with the Roadrunners.
I’m putting a quatloo on the Roadrunners on the money line and combining it with UAB money line on a parlay.
