Let the Party get started! The gang is gathering at the beach Command ready to get this thing rolling.
And, of course the highlight, besides getting to travel with Mrs Doofus, that’s a side glance as she is wondering what I’m doing. Is she reading my mind?
Love ya Babe.
Aaaand we're back
The other best thing is it’s Spartan Time! Your favorite team hosts Tulsa in what is becoming a traditional Week1 Labor Day Friday night under the lights.
Spartans -23.5 vs Tulsa – The Golden Showers under former Baylor OC Philip Montgomery, runs the old Baylor RPO offense. Except they can’t pass, have no pass protection, so rely on the ground game. Oops, that’s exactly what State does best – stop the run. Number 1 across this fruited plain to be precise.
That may change a bit though. Last years starting QB Seth Boomer was awful so Montgomery got a former recruit Zach Smith to transfer from Baylor. He’s a much better passer and could get the RPO to actually work. That is if he were able to play behind a OL that could handle the Spartan DL. They can’t. Willikes and Panasiuk will be in his grill all game long.
So the real story line is going to be – is the MSU offense back. Will they open up the offense and will Lewerke be back to 2017 form. Last year Tulsa ran a soft 3-3-5 defense that basically gave up stuffing the run. This year the have a new DC so they will likely tighten things up. He’s not that new though, he was promoted from LB coach. If they stay with the defensive scheme expect Connor Heyward and Matt Dotson to have big games.
This is just the opening opponent that State needs to face. They play into State’s strength on defense and don’t challenge you on defense.
State rarely covers big spreads so I wouldn’t bet them Just sit back and get your victory cigar out late in the 3rd quarter.
I will lay the first Mega bets of the 2019 season starting with:

Syracuse -18.5 @ Liberty – Syracuse finished 10-3 and could have been 12-1 if they closed out against Clemson and won in OT vs Pitt. They are the only ranked team in the ACC not wearing purple and orange.
Syracuse made have lost Eric Dungey to the NFL but replacement Tommy DeVito is so highly regarded that he was selected 3rd team all ACC. He’s more of a pocket passer than Dungey so expect slot receivers Sean Riley and Nykiem Johnson, to have big days. Michigan State transfer Trishton Jackson could join in the fun too.
Liberty put up gaudy numbers on offense last year but never faced the ferocious pass rush that Syracuse will unleash. Defensive linemen Alton Robinson and Kendall Coleman totaled for a combined 22 sacks last season.
Normally, these matchups are payday games for the smaller school but this one is being played in Liberty. Doesn’t matter, there’s too much talent disparity. The Orange roll big.

Virginia -2.5 @ Pitt – It decided the Coastal last year. Pitt came to Charlottesville on an early November bad weather night and left with a 23-13 victory.
Pitt ran wild last year against a banged up UVA defense. Leading RB Darrin Hall is now Green Bay Packer. More importantly, there is a change in offensive philosophy.
New OC and former UMass HC Mark Whipple likes to throw the pigskin all over the yard. That doesn’t play to Pitts strength. Meanwhile a healthy, experienced (they return 8 starters) and improved Cav DL won’t get gouged again. Neither will all-world CB Bryce Hall. Pitt trying to pass the ball is exactly what UVA is looking for.
The Cav’s have a pretty talented Bryce playing on the other side of the ball too. All QB Byrce Perkins did last year was lead the ACC in total offense. He’ll have a lot of familiar faces in the huddle as 4 of his 5 favorite targets from last year return.
There’s a huge revenge chip on the UVA’s shoulders. They are healthy, have the better defense and QB. Virginia will get an early leg up on the Coastal title.

Oregon +2.5 vs Auburn (in Atlanta) - Oh, how times have changed. The last time these two met in was in 2010 for the National Championship. Auburn won that game 22-19. But now Cam Newton is long gone as is Oregon HC Chip Kelly and the Quack Attack
This time, Oregon is starting the first round draft pick talent at quarterback with Justin Hebert while Auburn is starting over. Oregon QB Justin Herbert is an elite talent, a likely top 5 pick, with the experience and tools to handle the pressure of the big moment. Auburn is starting a true freshman Bo Nix who’ll have to handle a veteran defense that’s going to bring the pressure from the start.
All five starters are back on the Duck OL with four All-Pac-12 performers in place. They will hold their own against the strength of Auburn, it's DL. RBs CJ Verdell (1,018 yards, 10 TD) and Travis Dye (739 yards, four TD) provide an effective 1-2 punch in the run game.
The Pac 12 really needs this game. Washington did last year too and ended up getting thumped by Auburn. History won't repeat. The Ducks start out their quest for a CFP spot.

I'll put down a couple Mini Megas on:
Oklahoma State -14.0 @ Oregon State - It's the battle of OSUs. When Mullet Man and his Cowboys are on they are really on. But when they are not - watch out. The other OSU, Oregon State might be the worst team in the Pac 12. OSU, Okie State will be on. Lay the points.
Boise State +6.5 @ Florida State – That hurricane we were worried about, well, it got this game moved from a neutral site in Jacksonville to a home game for FSU and moved game time up from 7:00 to Noon. And while the spread was adjusted from Boise +4.0 to Boise + 6.5, it still dropped this to a Mini Mega.
In Willy Taggert’s first year at the helm he skillfully guided the Noles to it’s first non-bowl season since Reagan was in office. The defense was a huge disappointment.
Boise ripped off another 10 win season and are the kings of third down. Last year they were 2nd in offensive conversions and 11th in preventing 3rd down conversions. FSU ? 111th best in getting off the field. The Broncos won’t be intimidated by an underperforming FSU.
And it's a target rich environment for the Point Whore Parlay. I'll go with:
Middle Tenn State +34.5 @ scUM - I only got 31.0 when I was in Vegas. but I still like it
Toledo +12.0 @ Kentucky
Georgia Southern +27.5 @ LSU

The Sheriff sent in his first picks of the 2019 season
The Sheriff has one rule for Week 1 betting: no one knows anything about these teams yet so take the points.
Akron (+17) @ Illinois - The only thing the Sheriff knows about Akron is it’s in Ohio, but we all know that the Illini under Lovie Smith have absolutely sucked the last 3 years. Gimme the points.
South Alabama (+36) @ Nebraska - The Cornhuskers are a trendy pick to win the Big Ten West this year. The Sheriff’s extensive background research has revealed that South Alabama’s nickname is the Jaguars, but the Doofus did not preview the SUN BELT conference so that is the extent of his knowledge. Gimme the points.
Wyoming (+17.5) vs Missouri - The Sheriff’s favorite Mountain West team opens the season at elevation in Laramie against a SEC opponent. Gimme the points
Doofus - this is one where I tempted to lay the points. Mizzou is sneakly good with former Clemson Kelly Bryant under center.
And for all the games, spreads, picks and much much more here is the 2019 Week 1 Bettors Guide
