Lots of good bowl games today! Here's the picks for the first couple of games.
New Mexico Bowl – San Diego State -3.5 vs Central Michigan – Jim McElwain led a tremendous turnaround for the Chips. In his first year he took CMU from 1-11 to 8-5 and a spot in the MAC championship game. He should off his offensive skill set as CMU had the 28th overall best offense.
The Chips will face a stiff test as SDSU has one of the best defenses in the country. The Spaztecs have the 4th best scoring defense.
CMU is loose with the football. They coughed up 15 fumbles to rank dead last in Div 1A.
The Chips are 8-0 when scoring more than 24 points, and 0-5 when scoring under. No one has scored 24 points or more on San Diego State this year.
Neither team plays well in bowls. SDSU has lost two straight while CMU is on a four game bowl losing streak.
SDSU has a way of playing down to their competition. With points at a premium, I’ll take CMU and the points for a quatloo.

Cure Bowl - Georgia Southern -5.5 vs Liberty – Other than upsetting Buffalo, Liberty hasn’t beaten anyone with a pulse. They beat two Div 1AA schools, New Mexico, UMass and New Mexico State, twice. Not exactly Murderers Row. The offense is 31st in scoring but it’s more a reflection of who’ve they have played.
Georgia Southern has some pretty good wins under their belt, beating one of the better Group of Five teams, App State as well as bowl eligible Georgia State.
The Eagles rely on the triple offense. GSU ended up 8th in rushing but 130th in passing. The passing defensive stats are ugle but getting rocked by LSU 55-3 will skew those stats.
Do you really want to back Hugh Freeze? Not me. GSU’s rushing game will control the clock and keep the Flames unlit on the sidelines. I’ll put a Min Mega on the Eagles.
More picks to come today.
