There might be something to this picking under the influence. Not the picks actually, that went a random 20-20-1. But it’s not the picks that matter, it’s the bets. And they were phenomenal. The Doofus went 3-0 on the Mega Bets with:
Nevada +24.0 @ Northwestern – The Cats just don’t cover big spreads, especially if they are trailing 17-7 at the half. Bruce was worried but his Cats pulled it out in the second half winning 31-20 but not getting the cover WIN
Georgia Southern +34.5 @ Auburn - Got a bit lucky in this one. Auburn was up 41-7 with a minute to go, 4th and six at the Ga Southern 30. The Tigers went for it and threw incomplete. The Eagles get the cover by the hook. WIN
Alabama -7.0 vs Florida State – All hail the process! Bama’s defense and special teams dominated. The Tide made two picks while the special teams blocked a punt, blocked a FG and recovered a fumble on a KO return on the way to a 24-7 beat down.
The Noles not only got trashed but lost their starting QB to a knee injury. So much for a trip to the playoffs for the Noles. WIN
I also went 2-1 on the Mini Megas making for a very profitable weekend.

The Sheriff got off to a bit of a rocky start going 1-2 on his picks with:
Navy -10.0 vs Fla Atlantic – In the game that was played over two days due to lightning delays, the Middies rolled 42-19 WIN
Wyoming +11.5 @ Iowa – tap those brakes on Wyoming QB Josh Allen’s draft rating. The Iowa defense shut down Allen and the Cowboy attack, winning 24-3 LOSS
UCLA -3.5 vs Texas A&M – Week 1’s best games were on Sunday. UCLA was down 44-10. Then, at the exact second that Atlanta began their epic Super Bowl melt down, the Aggies began theirs. UCLA capped off the second biggest comeback in Div 1A history with a fake spike, throw for a TD pass to win 45-44

The biggest comeback? – if you went to the GO JUMBO trip in 2006 you were there. The Spartans came back from 35 down to beat Northwestern 41-38.
Great comeback by the Bruins but not enough to get the cover LOSS
Take Aways from Week 1
With another melt down, A&M HC Kevin Sumlin’s hot seat just went nuclear. He might not make it through the season.
And A&M lost their starting QB Nick Starkel in the game too. His replacement Kellen Mond was awful.
Can a coach be on the hot seat after one game? I was not a big fan of Texas HC Tom Herman after weird late season losses at Houston. To start off the season with a loss to an average at beat Maryland team certainly got the grumbling going early in Austin. And don’t blame former HC Charlie Strong, he left a pretty good roster. But first year head coaches sometimes have ugly losses. Saban lost to UL Monroe his first year at Bama.
Also getting some furry eyebrows after one game is Baylor HC Matt Rhule. He lost to a bad Div 1AA Liberty 48-45. Unlike Texas, Rhule inherited a mess. But losing to Liberty has the nay sayers crawling out from the woodwork.
Liberty was one of four Div1AA teams to win this week. Tennessee State spoiled Georgia State’s home opener at its new stadium 17-10; The best team in the FCS, James Madison crushed East Carolina 34-14 and a horrifically bad Howard beat UNLV 43-40. Add Rebel HC Tony Sanchez to the Hot Seat list.
The PAC 12 went 11-0 this weekend. Key wins, besides UCLA’s miracle in the Rose Bowl, were Colorado’s stifling a high flying Colorado State 17-3; and a great back and forth game between UNC and Cal that Cal pulled out to win 35-30.
For the Spartans – LJ Scott should stop fantasizing about going early to the NFL and start focusing on hanging onto the ball. And Spartan fans better hope that Brian Lewerke stays healthy as Damien Terry was awful in mop up duties.
Still, nice win and cover after a very shaky first quarter. With Rutgers looking good against Washington, Maryland beating Texas, and Western Michigan playing tough against USC there are no free spaces on the MSU schedule.
And over the weekend we lost another one of our radio heroes. Walter Becker, half of the legendary band Steely Dan passed away.
Becker and Donald Fagan formed Steely Dan in the early Seventies. They were a band like no other. They were unique, precise and creative blend of jazz, pop, soul and rock. I liked their music so much I named a dog and daughter after their songs.
The band in heaven gets another great guitarist, sax player and song writer
