Last week I went 2-2, or maybe it was 2-1-1. Then again it might have been 3-1. Crazy. Yup, that was last weekends Minnesota New Orleans game.
You know how it ended. With 10 seconds to go I was grumbling about how the Vikings had blown a 17 point lead. I said to Mrs Doofus, the only way I can win this game is if a Minnesota receiver, breaks a tackle and runs ito the end zone.
And then the play. Stefon Diggs catches the ball, safety Marcus Diggs whiffs on the tackle, and Diggs scoots into the end zone. It was the first ever walk off TD in NFL playoff history.
The place erupts, I put down my Four Roses and yelled out “Called it!!”
I texted the same thing to Pat. He was not impressed. He was grumbling about how the Saints defense could blow such an easy play.
But as fun as the play was, the excitement was really starting in the Sportsbook. See the spread opened up at 3.5, rose to 5.5 during the week and dropped to 5.0 at the time of the kick off. That small drop doesn’t usually mean anything as those are considered dead numbers. Games rarely end up with a difference of 5 points
But with the TD, Minnesota was up by exactly 5. Since it was the last play of the game, the Saints had gone to the locker room. The refs called them back for the XP. If the Vikes kick the XP, Minnesota covers, if they don’t they either get the push or the Saints cover depending on when and where you made the bet. The place must have been nuts.
After several minutes, the Saints managed to only sent out ten men. Will they go for the XQ, maybe even go for two? Must have been wild in the book.
Minnesota kneels down – it’s a five point win.
In my playoff pool they used they used the opening line so I won that game but the Big Book of Guesses uses the Westgate Super Book line. That stayed at 5.5 so I’ll count it as a loss. Just a wild finish.
Hopefully this weekend will have some of the same dramatics.

New England -7.5 vs Jacksonville – This game really comes down to one question – how bad is Brady’s hand. Forget about whether Jacksonville can pressure Brady up the middle or can Fournette go off against a suspect Patriot run defense. Pay no attention to whether Blake Bortles may not be that bad (he is). Nope this comes down to Brady’s thumb.
On Thursday it was reported that Brady hurt his hand during Wednesday’s practice but no word as to how or who hurt it. Conflicting reports came out – did he or did he not practice on Friday. How did he do? On Friday he shows up at a presser with red gloves on refusing to answer questions about his hand.. The conspiracy theories exploded. There hasn’t been so much talk about gloves since OJ.
I’m of the camp that thinks he’s dinged up but fine. As Pat said about the Vikings last week – the players know the spread. I think the New England coaching staff is trying to get the spread down so they can clean up at the window.
I was going to lay points when the opening line of 9.5. If Pittsburgh can shred the “vaunted” Jacksonville defense with an aging Big Ben and half interested LeVeon Bell (he skipped the walk throughs last week before the Jaguars game as a tune up to a hold out next year) imagine what New England can do. Jacksonville struggles against pass catching tight ends and running backs. That's exactly how Brady destroys defenses.

Minnesota -3.0 @ Philadelphia – It’s a battle between two Rams castoff QBs. Foles and Keenum were teammates back in 2015. Foles sucked and returned to Philadelphia with a quick stint in Kansas City. Keenum replaced Foles but was benched late during 2016 season to make room for Jared Goff. He signed with the Vikings prior to this season.
These two teams are very similar. Both rely on their defences to cover up deficiencies in the QB play. Both defenses will get pressure against inferior offensive lines. But Keenum is the better QB and his ability to scramble will keep drives alive.
I’ll lay the three points as Foles will be more likely to have a turnover. Minnesota will capitalize and be on its way to the first ever home game Super Bowl.
Make it a Mega Bet
