Chris sent out the invite
C’mon over for some football viewing but leave your cigars at home.
I wasted no time turning down that invite.
No cigars?? Count me out! What is this world coming to?
Actually I couldn’t make it since I was babysitting the foster kids. Mrs Doofus was out having a good time with friends and I was left with the always hungry rugrats. I let food out on the table and set up the TVs and retired to the Doofus Deck for plenty of football.
Chris and the gang called just before kickoff for the MSU game but I didn’t answer. Not sure what it is but my phone doesn’t ring. It hasn’t for years. I even got a new one and that one doesn’t ring either. Someday, I’ll go to the brainiacs at Apple and get them to fix it but in the meantime I just answer if I feel the vibration. Mrs Doofus is always vibrating me.
Anyways, since I didn’t pick up the call they decided to root for Notre Dame. BS! I called their bluff. I knew Bruce would never in a million years root for the Domers. And when I called back, I could hear Ellis in the shouting that he was going for State. My one true friend!
The rest of you can rot in hell if you really rooted for ND over State (except you Mark, of course).
And a helluva a game it was.
State came out pounding away. Pat texted during the first quarter “Looks like State’s strategy is pound the line and tire them out”
Excellent call
Midway in the 2nd quarter took an 8-7 lead on this brilliant Donnie Corley catch.

More pounding away put us up 15-7 at the half.
Then the grind 'em strategy really kicked in. After punting to start the third quarter, State scored TDs on three consecutive drives.
In your face, pound it up your backside, stop us if you can, heartbreaking drives. State was killing it.
With only a few minutes left in the 3rd State had racked up a 36-7 lead.
I was just about to text the gang that this games is OVAH!
But I knew better. I’ve been a Spartan fan far too long to put this one in the win column now.
Sure enough ND's QB DeShone Kizer, who until now was missing passes all over the field got hot. Red Hot!

He goes 65 yards in a minute to make it 36-14.
State continues to pound away but now they are getting stuffed. They punt.
Kizer gets it back and 2 minutes later scores another TD. 36-21. This can't be happening - could it?
State pounds away again and punts.
Kizer keeps on winging and in another 1:45 puts it into the endzone again. All of a sudden a 36-7 lead is now down to 36-28 with way too much time left – over 6 minutes to go.
By now infamous meltdowns of Spartans past were coming back. 2003 La Tech, 1998 Purdue and perhaps most painful of all - 2006 vs Notre Dame, on national TV, at night in a deluge.
Could it happen again? Were we just doomed to blow leads like this. I thought those ghosts were vanquished long ago by Dantonio.
State gets the ball back – another chance to milk the clock. Not all the thoughts were nightmares. I also remembered the game winning 9 minute epic Iowa drive of last. Let’s have one of those.

Not this time. State goes three and out. The defense was going to have to save the day.
And that's where these Spartans are different then past ones. The defense can and has stiffened when it's needed the most.
They hold ND to a 3 and out!
Now get the ball and get a fl!cking first down.
The tension mounts. It's 3rd and 7 - State is deep in their side of the field.
Got...to....get.... a....1st down!! C'mon. Put this game away
O'Conner drops back and finds a wide open Corley. ND had a bust in the coverage and Corley is standing there, all alone waiting for the ball. No Domers anywhere in sight
O'Conner does the right thing and just gets it to him. Nothing fancy. Just get it there.
Corley makes a clutch grab and ...First down!!
State runs out the clock and wins an exciting game. It may have been nerve wracking and too close for comfort. But they won. Something they would not have done in years past.
I'm still recovering.

No need to recover from the betting though. It was a rather non event
The Big Book of Guesses went just under 500 again 25-28-2.
The Doofus went 1-2 on the Mega Bets but going 5-1 on the Mini Megas evened out the final tally.
Western Kentucky -17.5 @ Miami (OH) - Multiple TVs and I had the computer on to watch this one on espn3. This one played out eerily similar to the Spartan game. The PillPoppers jumped to a 24-3 lead midway through the 3rd quarter and then took their foot off the gas.
The Redskins came back to make the final score 31-24. I might have been caught on a "look ahead" situation for WKU. They host Vandy this week. LOSS
Ohio State -1.5 Oklahoma - On Sunday Pat texted a link to a Bleacher Report article with the winners and losers from Saturday. 12 was Dantonio( (winner) and 13 was Kelley (loser). Makes sense. And I really liked 15. It was Stoops (loser) and his inability to win big games.
Exactly as I called it. Oklahoma got butt stomped by the Bucknuts 45-24. easy money WIN
Tampa Bay +6.5 @ Arizona - Sometimes your picks just go south in a hurry. The Bucs turned it over 5 times including a pick 6 in the third quarter. Nothing you can do when that happens other than hope they go your way on the GO JUMBO weekend. Arizona cruised to a 40-7 win LOSS
