It was a fantastic time at Mr and Mrs. H's Coastal Command. The weather was overcast and cool - perfect for a football weekend. The storm that was ravaging the East Coast had passed but it was kicking up the surf. The crashing waves provided a nice backdrop to the Football Watching balcony.
Chris and I had spent Saturday morning setting up the multiple TVs. They were going to be needed as several good games involving our favorite teams were going to be on simultaneously. Starting at noon with:
MSU -21.5 vs Purdue - Bruce had sent an email saying that he would Mega Bet MSU if he was in Vegas.I told him that is why he can't go to Vegas. State wins (4-0 straight up) but they don't cover (0-4 ATS). No way would I lay 21.5

By halftime, Bruce was starting to feel like he was missing a good bet. State was up 21-0 and was pushing Boilers all over the place. The "See, I told you so's" were just about ready to come.
I knew better. I've seen this circus too many times this year. It started with a botched punt. And then the defense went AWOL. Purdue scored TDs on three straight possessions. With 6:44 left they had cut the lead to 24-21.
State's offense burned the clock down to 3 minutes but at midfield were forced to punt.
Purdue gets the ball at their 20. They were on fire and had the ball in their hands with a chance to win. Could the season go down in flames so early?

It was going to be up to the defense, once again, to win the game. Purdue gets to their 37, 4th and six. Incomplete! and then - flag - defensive holding on Arjen Calhoun.
Purdue has life. They get to midfield. It's fourth down again. This time Calhoun breaks up the pass without a penalty. State wins 24-21.
I turned to Bruce and said "And that is why you don't beat on State"
If nothing else, State is going to be battle tested when the pressure comes from the rest of the Big Ten. With the injuries mounting, every game is going to be a tight one.
Indiana +21.0 vs Ohio State - In the same email that Bruce was sure that State would cover, he was pleading with me to not bet Chris and take Indiana to cover against Ohio State. He didn't want to hear Chris go on about hitting up the "Doofus ATM".
I made the bet anyways. And while the Mega Bets are just practice for Vegas, this one involved real cash. More importantly, it involved bragging rights. I needed a win to shut Chris up.
It was an easy win. The Buckeye offense is just not humming. Ezekiel Elliott broke three long TD runs but that was just about it for Ohio State. Cardale Jones struggled throwing a pick. They also fumbled it four times losing it twice.
Indiana's offense is doing just fine. With 10 minutes left they had cut the lead to 34-27. The teams traded punts until the Hoosiers had the ball one last time 3:44 left, first and 10 at their 43.
They drive to the Buckeye 6 - First and Goal! The Bucknuts are going down baby! Chris had long lost the bet. Now he was just hoping this game doesn't go to OT. Or worse yet, Indiana goes for 2 and gets it. They way they were moving the ball, it was a distinct possibility.
OSU's defense stiffens and aided by a false start it got down to one final play - 4th and goal at the 10. It's when Indiana went back to being Hoosiers again on the last play

Ugly ending to a great game

Georgia Tech -7.5 vs North Carolina - This game was just ugly.
It started out great. Tech got up 21-0 on a porous NC defense. Bruce was splitting time between the balcony with Chris and I watching the Indiana game and inside, next to Mrs Bruce, watching the massive big screen TV showing Tech.
But two TDs by UNC in the last 90 seconds of the first half had everyone very nervous. Tech was up 21-14 but the tide had appeared to have changed.
Carolina didn't stop scoring. In the second half they continued to gash the Georgia Tech defense outscoring the Jackets 24-7.
The killer was this trick play to take the lead 31-28 early in the fourth quarter.

When UNC scored on a 4th and five from the Tech 27 to go up 38-28 late in the fourth - Bruce came out to the balcony for good. Mrs Bruce was going to need some quiet time and Bruce struggles to be quiet.
Tech got a late FG to cut the score to 38-31 but their final drive ended at midfield.

Despite the MSU near miss and the Tech melt down, overall, it was a great weekend for the Big Book of Guesses and the Doofus. The BBof G went an amazing 37-21-0 against the spread on the college games, another 3-1 on the over/under and 8-6-1 on the NFL.
The Doofus went 2-1 on the Mega Bets with:
Memphis -8.5 @ South Florida – Mrs. Doofus and I had arrived in time for a fine chili dinner. Afterwards, I went to rinse the dishes. I wanted to help while I still sober enough to do so. From in the living room, Chris and Bruce were shouting that the Memphis game was kicking off.
The Bulls scored on their first two possessions. Chris was pounding on me “South Florida is good! No way would I give 8 and a half.” Chris says things just to say them. He really doesn’t know.
I told him that USF was playing on emotion. It was at home, nationally televised on a Friday night. It’ll wear off and Paxton Lynch will destroy a bad Bull’s team.
Sure enough, Memphis responded with a TD on the next drive to make it 10-7. It would remain that way at the half. Chris was still chirping although with a lot less enthusiasm.
Memphis got their mojo in the third quarter. They scored 10 points. They got another TD to start the fourth quarter. It was now 24-10. I had the cover and more importantly was getting quiet from Chris.
He left to do whatever Buckeye fans do when they aren’t getting their way. Too bad for him. With a minute left USF got a cheap TD to get the back door cover. Final score Memphis 24 USF 17 LOSS

Alabama +1.5 @ Georgia – Bama went into Georgia’s house, went straight to the fridge, drank all their beer and ate all the leftover wings. And then for good measure pissed all over their new hardwood floors and watched while they made Georgia clean it up. It was that kind of beat down.
This game was no contest. Bama jumped to a 24-3 halftime lead and then snuffed out any hope that Georgia would make a second half comeback by doing a pick six on the Dawg’s first possession.
The Tide dominated the game scoring on offense, defense and even special teams. Now Mark Richt gets to feel all the pressure that Nick Saban was getting last week. As expected, in a huge game, Georgia folded like Pete’s tent on a canoe trip.
Final score Alabama 38 Georgia 10 WIN

Oregon -7.5 @ Colorado – Mike and I stayed up for the last game of the weekend. It would be a late game. It was supposed to start at 10pm Eastern but a lightning delay pushed the kickoff to 11pm. No matter, we were going to get as much football as we could.
Once again, I was laying points to a home team that was playing with emotion. Colorado was shredding the Oregon defense but the Ducks were keeping pace. At the half it was 17-17. I needed a few stops from the Ducks.
The defense answered holding Colorado scoreless until the fourth quarter. In the meantime Oregon scored two TDs to make it 31-17. Oregon then really turned it on scoring 10 more in the fourth to make the final Oregon 41 Colorado 24 WIN

I also went 2-0 on the Mini Megas with:
Navy -5.0 @ Air Force – Navy QB Keenan Reynolds needed 5 rushing TDs to set the all time NCAA record. He still needs 5. But he’s not fretting. The Middie defense forced 4 turnovers, the RBs scored 3 TDs and Reynolds passed for a TD as they routed Air Force 33-11 WIN
Carolina -3.0 @ Tampa Bay – Jameis Winston is starting to look more and more like a huge bust. Playing against a real defense, he tossed four picks as Carolina rolled 37-23 WIN
The Point Whore Parlay just missed again going 2-1:
Texas Tech +17.0 @ Baylor – Baylor did their thing in destroying Texas Tech 63-35 Loss – Good thing I took the over too
San Jose State +19.5 @ Auburn – RB Peyton Barber ripped off 5 TDs and the Tiger defense forced 4 turnovers in a 35-21 win. San Jose State hung around just enough to get the cover WIN
Indiana +21.0 @ Ohio State – Easy $5. Thanks Chris - you were overdrawn at the ATM
