It was shaping up to be a good weekend. Michigan State had just beaten Air Force and their tricky triple option and I was off to see Bruce and Mrs Bruce to watch Georgia Tech take on Notre Dame. Not only would they be cheering on the Jackets with adult beverage infused enthusiasm (not that Mrs Bruce needed it – she is quite effusive without any help) but it was a Mega Bet! Time to get that first Mega Bet win of the season.
Well, it didn’t quite work out the way we had planned. The host and hostess were very generous much like the Jacket defense
Georgia Tech -2.5 @ Notre Dame – When I arrived, Bruce and I were giddy. State had won and Northwestern was putting the final touches on its win over Duke. Bruce was yelling “Our nerds are better than your Nerds!”
Mr. Bruce was only half interested. Her anxiety level was increasing. Kickoff was fast approaching and Bruce was flitting between several games. Just before 3:30 she grabbed the remote.
By now, Mrs Doofus had arrived. She was rooting for Tech but hoping to get some look-ins on the Auburn game too.
Neither Mrs need have bothered. Both games were over long before the final whistle.
Tech could not control either line of scrimmage. Two weeks into the season, they had scored 144 points. Now it looked like they wouldn’t get 144 yards. The Domer defense did exactly what it needed to do to stop the option. Get into the backfield quick, force a pitch and tackle. Notre Dame’s DL was camped in the Jacket backfield chasing down runners. DC Brian Van Gorder seems to have figured out the triple option after all.
Meanwhile, Notre Dame’s offense didn’t seem to miss the loss of starting QB Malik Zaire. Backup DeShone Kizer sliced up the Tech secondary. And after an the occasional incomplete pass, RB CJ Prosise would burst into the Tech secondary for a long gain.
After Prosise galloped for an ND record 91 TD run, I decided to call it. ND was up 30-7 with 7 minutes to go. Not only that but Auburn as getting killed by LSU. It was pretty bleak.
I should have stayed. Georgia Tech almost pulled off a miracle. They scored a TD with a minute to go. Got the onside and scored again with 20 seconds to go!! get another onside and this could be a game for the ages!
No such luck - they ran out of miracles. Touchdown Jesus was just teasing. Notre Dame got the next onside kick and ended the game. Final Score Notre Dame 30 Tech 22 LOSS

Temple -10.5 @ Massachussets - Talk about wild finishes. UMass scored a TD with a minute to go to go up 23-20. The extra point would be critical as it would put the Minutemen up by four and force Temple to go for a TD.
The Owls block the extra point and run it back for two points! They trail 23-22 and UMass having to kickoff. And they will be getting good field position as UMass was flagged for an unsportsmanlike and would be kicking from their 25 yard line.
Temple gets the ball at their 35 and marches down to the UMass 15 with 10 seconds left. The Owls kick the FG and win it 25-23. Great game. Too bad I was giving 10.5. LOSS

Bowling Green +3.0 vs Memphis – This was expected to be a high scoring fun game. It didn’t disappoint. Each time one team scored the other would counter. After 3 quarters, the score was tied 34 all. Bowling Green scored the first TD in the fourth quarter. Of course, Memphis matched it.
These two teams combined for over 1,100 yards of offense. Amazingly, for as much as they were putting up in the air, there were no turnovers. The Tigers finally won it on a FG to win 44-41 – Right on the number TIE

I'm still looking for the first Mega Bet win of the season although there was some improvement last week. I went from GD awful to just weak. The Big Book of Guesses went 22-27-2 on the college games up from 19-32-1 last week. Small victories I guess. In the NFL, The Big Book of Guesses went 7-9 marginally better than 6-9-1 last week.
I missed on the Point Whore Parlay going 2-1. Northern Illinois lost to a bumbling Ohio State 20-13 easily covering the 35 point spread. Tulsa lost to Oklahoma 52-38 covering a 30.5 point spread. But Oklahoma State rolled UT San Antonio 69-14 making the card worthless.
The Mini Megas went 1-2 with Rice downing North Texas 38-14 covering the 8.5 point spread. Oregon rested QB Vernon Adams and let Georgia State hang around in a 61-28 win. Not enough to cover the 43.5 point spread. Buffalo bumbled their way to an ugly 40-32 loss to New England - failing to cover as 1 point home dogs.

Here’s some take aways from last week’s games -
Alabama – two losses in a row to Ole Miss? Is Bama slipping? As Hatin Ass Spurrier put it “Alabama fans were leaving that stadium like there was an overturned truck full of cigarettes outside.” The Tide is now 4-5 in its last nine games against Top 15 teams.
The decision to start a rookie QB against the LandShark defense? Dumb Saban, Just dumb. The Big Guy is going to hate this but let’s not start fading the Tide just yet. Remember they were -5 in turnovers yet had the ball in their hands with a chance to win it at the end of the game.
Central Florida – what happened to the Knights? They used to be one of my favorite teams to bet on. Their tremendous defense kept them in games against power 5 teams and kept them at the top of the American Conference. This year is a greased rail downhill train wreck.
Prior to the season HC George O’Leary started hinting that this may be his last season. Looks like he got his retirement started early. UCF is 0-3 with losses to Florida International and Furman. Really? Furman? That’s bad.
Connecticut – You’re in the game Huskies. With the defense playing great and a chance to end it into OT you go for the FG – not the fake! With 53 seconds left at the Tiger 25, Kicker Tim Boyle threw a wounded duck over the middle into triple coverage and the pass was picked winning the game for Mizzou

The Huskies are Boston College light - a good enough defense to keep games close but not enough offense to win games. If it weren’t for the Big Al rule I would take UConn and the points this year.
Auburn – Sorry Big Guy, but is there a more disappointing team this year than Auburn? The offense was supposed to hum as always and with Muschamp leading the defense everything was set up to win the SEC.
The defense showed some improvement until it went into Baton Rouge and handed the Heisman to RB Leonard Fournette with these kind of runs

Meanwhile the offense is misfiring like an ’82 Yugo. With the team ranked 116th in total offense, HC Gus Malzahn has decided to switch QBs going with redshirt freshman Sean White. Desperate times down on the Plains
Northwestern – Over the last few years, the Cats were known for playing just good enough to lose a close game. This year behind a tight defense, they already have a home win over Stanford and a road win over a solid duke team.
I don't want to jinx it Bruce but with Wisconsin trying to find a running game and Nebraska sitting at 1-2, could this be the year that Northwestern challenges in the Big Ten West? Minnesota and and an improved Iowa are out there too. The West race could be very exciting.
The week 4 Mega Losses are coming soon
Remember - the 2015 GO JUMBO trip is Nov 7th at the Westgate Resort
