It’s tough not to be gun shy after the whoopin’ I took last week. I usually start out slow but this is about as bad as I’ve done. Ever the optimist, I’m figuring I’m getting my bad picks out of the way even earlier this year. I mean, it’s got to turn around – right??
We will see.
Before I get into the Mega Bet Losses (fade ‘em while you can), here are some interesting things going around college football
Rutgers – Dobbie meekly tried to defend his Knights after the news broke during the summer about miscreants on his team doing all kinds of nefarious things. Now comes news that HC Kyle Flood is suspended for three games and fined $50,000 for contacting a professor about the status of Bruce’s favorite Knight – CB Nadir Barnwell. Flood was told by a member of Rutgers' academic advising staff not to contact professors about student-athletes, but he still went ahead anyways with the in-person meeting. Flood stated he may have told the advisor that he used his personal email account to avoid an Open Public Records Act request. Sounds like he should run for Secretary of State.
A review of the report finds even dumber things done by Flood How dumb can you be
Then news came out that less than an hour after Knights loss to Washington State, WR Lester Caroo was slammed his girlfriend to the sidewalk. He has been suspended indefinitely. I’ll see what Dobbie has to say about all that this weekend.
Hatin' Ass Spurrier had it right when he said "Rutgers brags about being the oldest college football program, which is probably why it's begging for assisted suicide"
It was another week of last minute heroics. Just prior to Caroo’s WWE move on his girlfriend, Washington State beat the Knights on a TD pass to the back of the endzone with 8 seconds left.
Notre Dame - Bruce is always going on about how he hates the luck of the Irish, He was in full lather this weekend after Notre Dame pulled this week’s game out of the rear on this play.
We will see.

Word around the ‘hood is that Bruce can been seen wandering around aimlessly muttering “My Jackets will get them this week, you’ll see…YOU’LL SEE!”
Mootsie is content to chuckle softly on his patio, periodically playing the Dame fight song - just loud enough for Bruce to hear. This is going to be fun this week.
The Sax Man is geeked – he will be at the game.
BYU - While the Catholics got a bit of luck this week, it doesn’t compare to what the Mormans have been getting. BYU not only won on a Hail Mary in week 1 (do Mormans believe in Hail Marys?) - they won on one in week 2 too.

This week BYU travels to UCLA where they are 16.5 point underdogs. The Sheriff figures their luck will end is willing to lay down the 2 TDs plus - see below
Make sure you are wearing your cup, Bruins. BYU is known for going after your berries

Texas – AD Steve Patterson was fired. Things started out well ith the hiring of Charlie Strong to lead football and Shaka Smart to run the basketball program. He also won approval for alcohol sales at sporting events.. That alone should give you life time tenure.
But things started going south when he went Dave Brandon in raising money. He caught a lot of grief by making opposing team bands pay for tickets. He surprised the City of Austin by asking it to fund a basketball arena after not putting a nickel into the Erwin center for 30 years. He later backed off.
Most egregious for big time donors – he instituted a loyalty program which pushed some long time season ticket holders out of their seats. You don’t mess with the big hats Steve! The play of the football team hasn’t helped. The got the shinola kicked out of them by Notre Dame and it took a 5-1 turnover margin to beat lowly Rice. Let's just hope they don't have their eyes on Mark Hollis.
The SEC - what was that? One week after having ten teams ranked, it all came crashing down. Hey, Bielema, of you are going to belittle Ohio State for scheduling MAC teams, you better beat the one one your schedule. Sure Toledo is good but your are in the be all and end all of college football - the SEC West.
Tennessee was supposed to be the "it" program in the SEC this year - a dark horse to win the East. Then they blew a 14 point lead with 8 minutes left to Oklahoma. It was the Sooners third straight win over an SEC team.
And Big Guy - what's the deal with Auburn? They almost got Appalachian Stated. At least App State was a great Div 1AA program when the beat Michigan. Not so with Jax State.
Of course. I have no room to talk with the way my picks have been going. But in the interest of allowing people to bet against my picks here are this weeks Mega Bets.

Georgia Tech -2.5 @ Notre Dame - The Sax Man called. He was on his way to the Georgia Tech game in South Bend. He was pumped. “I think they are going to win big tomorrow!”
“Me too!”
There was a pause. Then “You’re not going to Mega bet them are you? You know they aren’t going too good”
That’s an understatement. I said “I think this is the week it turns”
Another pause
Then I said “But I could be talked out of it for the right price".
Since an acceptable offer was not forthcoming..here goes
Notre Dame has played one great game and one, well, not so great. The opener against Texas was text book in a 38-3 slaughter. But when the entered into ACC play they struggled against a flawed Virginia team. Sure, Virginia was pumped. And sure, they got a few breaks along the way. But in the end, the Domers needed a last second miracle to pull off the win.
Now they face a red hot Tech squad that will be geeked to come into South Bend. It’s so rare for Tech to play Notre Dame that one of the murals in Bobby Dodd shows a victory over the Irish from a time long ago.
And while Notre Dame gets to play against the triple option every year by playing Navy they 1) fail to contain it and 2) haven’t seen anything like what Georgia Tech is coming with. In two seasons as the Notre Dame DC, Brian Van Gorder’s teams have allowed 34 points and 39 points to Navy. He hasn’t figured out how to stop it.
QB Justin Thomas is a perfect fit for HC Paul Johnson offense. Quick to make the right read, able to run with it of it is there and most importantly, go over the top when defenses cheat too much. Tech has now run for over 200 yards in 16 straight games.
Notre Dame’s victory over Virginia was a pyrrhic one in that they not only lost starting QB Malik Zaire, but also his favorite security blanket TE Duran Smythe.
The flaw with Tech over the last few years was an inept defense. DC Ted Roof was brought in last year and his fixed it up enough to win against the big boys. It’s nowhere near the level of a Michigan State but good enough to let the Tech offense to win the game. Good enough to stop a team playing a backup quarterback missing its best dump off target.
The trends favor the Jackets. They have won nine straight against the spread going back to last year. Notre Dame is 2-6 over their last eight.

Temple -10.5 @ Massachussetts – This one comes down to motivation. Temple can destroy UMass if they want to. Do they want too? I looked – it’s not a trap game. Temple has a bye next week.
I’m impressed with Temple’s HC Matt Rhule. He comes across a lot like Dantonio. No non sense – straight shooter. He doesn’t allow his team to overlook an opponent. He didn’t allow the Owls to have a let down after dominating Penn State as they followed up that huge victory with another important win in the American conference – holding off Cincinnati in a 34-26 win.
Temple got the win even though they got out yarded by Cincinnati 557 yards to 296. They won it by picking off the Bearcats four times. In week one, they got the win by sacking Christian Hackenberg 10 times. The team rides on the coattails of the defense and the defense finds a way.
Expect the game to start out slowly for Temple, they have only scored a combined three points in the first quarter.
Both teams have trends gong in their favor. UMass is 8-4 ATS including 4-1 at home. Temple is 9-4 ATS on the road.
I'll take a focused Owl team putting the beat down on an over matched UMass team

I can hear Pat now. There you go again Doofus – taking road favorites. Don’t you ever learn? Sure – the best part is I get to learn it every year!
So just to keep Pat off my back I’ll take a home dog with
Bowling Green +3.0 vs Memphis – Bowling Green has been making some noise for the MAC. While Toledo rightfully gets the credit for beating Arkansas, the Falcons quietly scored six second half touchdowns in beating Maryland. BGSU has now put up 78 points on Power five defenses (30 on Tennessee).
Memphis can put up the points too. They’ve scored 118 points in two games. But it was against Kansas and Missouri State. Not quite the same
Falcon 5th year senior QB Matt Johnson has been on fire this year throwing for 424 yards against Tennessee and 494 yards against Maryland. BSU is called the Baylor of the MAC after averaging 625 yards per game with their up tempo offense.
In what should be a high scoring game, I’m going with the more battle tested home team getting the points.
I’m going against the trends here. Memphis is 9-1-1 ATS while BGSU is 3-6 at home ATS.
For this year’s first Point Whore Parlay I’ll take
Northern Illinois +35.0 @ Ohio State – The Huskies are not quite as good as in prior years but should be able to keep the game within 5 TDs while Urban tinkers with his offense.
Tulsa +35.0 @ Oklahoma – The Sooners are on let down alert after beating Tennessee. Tulsa is fired up to play their in state big brother and can put up points.
UT San Antonio +24.5 @ Oklahoma State – Letdown alert for the Cowboys. They struggled at Central and face Texas next week.
I’ll do some Mini Megas with
Rice -8.5 @ North Texas – North Texas is a tire fire – losing to lowly SMU. Rice held up well against Texas before losing. North Texas should be no problem
Oregon -43.5 vs Georgia State – The Ducks come out looking for blood after losing to MSU last week. They’re going to go for style points to get themselves back in the playoff conversation. What better opponent than the hapless Panthers. This game should be in the bag before the bands come out for half time.
I'll take my first stab at the NFL too but not enough to go Mega yet
Buffalo +1.0 vs New England - Rex Ryan has Bill Belichick's number going 8-5 ATS the hooded one. Brady's numbers against Pittsburgh on opening night were more about how the Steelers defense has crumbled since last year than about Brady
The Sheriff had a good week last week going 2-1 with his picks This week he likes
Stanford (+10) over USC. My comments last week regarding David Shaw still stand, but this is a rivalry game and 10 points is too big a number for a game that usually comes down to the last play. After beating up on Idaho and Arkansas State, we still know exactly nothing about the Condoms. I will take the points and the Trees.
UCLA (-16) over BYU. I wish this number was less than two touchdowns, but I’m going with the Bruins anyway. BYU has been a team of destiny the first two weeks with its backup QB Tanner Mangum beating both Nebraska and Boise State on last minute Hail Marys, but UCLA is playing great football right now. Keep an eye on this kid Josh Rosen – he’s got a NFL arm and already reads defenses better than Brett Hundley ever did. Stay up late and watch this game!
Cal (-6.5) over Texas. Here’s another spread that’s a little bigger than I would like (it opened at 1.5), but the smart money seems to be heading the Bear’s way so who am I to doubt the wise guys? Texas seems to be a team in turmoil (they just fired their AD) and Cal is actually playing some defense this year. The O-line is protecting Goff much better than it did last year and Cal has some NFL talent at wideout in Kenny Lawler and Bryce Treggs. A wise man once said, “we may be through with the past, but the past isn’t through with us.” If the Bears can forget their past, they should be able to win this game.
