Nick and Mrs Nick came down to check out the Lakeside Command. The drywallers were only part way through so the place was a mess. Mrs Doofus gave them an extended tour, all the while she getting redecorating tips from Mrs Nick.
Nick and I were content to sit on the deck and construct the the new Doofus Deck in our imaginations. Indoor/Outdoor bar overlooking the Doofus pontoon…thing is going to be grand. If, that is Mrs Doofus doesn’t use up all the construction funds on the inside of the house.
After the tour, Nick and I hurried down to a local BBQ and bourbon place the Big Guy found last fall. The food menu is compact and to the point. But the bourbon menu is fantastic. Took up nearly a page. We bellied up to the bar, ordered some fine beverages and watched the AFC championship game.
Earlier in the week, Jason said he would be in Vegas. I gave him 2 ½ quatloos. When I found out that the spread had moved to New England -3.5 I had him put ½ a quatloo on the over 45, a quatloo on Carolina -3.0 and a quatloo on Carolina to with the Super Bowl. I already had a future bet on New England to win the Super Bowl. I wanted to have a potential Woz bet where I had both entrants to win Super Bowl 50.
By the time Nick and I had finished our first round Mrs Doofus and Mrs Nick showed up. They had finished planning out the rest of the house (although I still unclear if there any funds were left over for the Doofus Deck) and joined us for the game. When I told her that I had Jason put a ½ quatloo on the over she looked at me real strange.
“I would have never taken the over”. I was dumbstruck. Mrs Doofus rarely weighs in on the spreads let alone an over/under. Did she really know what she was talking about or was she saying that to get my goat.
Guess she really knew what she was talking about

New England -3.0 @ Denver - Brady was awful. He completed only 48% of his passes – the first time ever in the playoffs he went under 50%. Granted, a lot had to do with the pressure he was getting – and that is the way to beat the Pats – pressure Brady without blitzing. Denver sacked Tom 4 times and whacked him another 19. He was definitely feeling the heat. But, even when he wasn’t pressured he was inaccurate. Missed throws, even a couple bad picks, Brady was spraying ‘em.
New England couldn’t turn to the run game either. They really don’t have one. In fact, Brady was the Pats leading rusher for the game.
So New England needed Brady to be his usual laser accurate self – and he wasn’t.
If Denver had a decent QB this game would have been a blow out. But the Broncos have Peyton Manning. He was bad too. The stats won’t reflect it. The talking heads will spout off about how Manning had multiple TD passes, he hasn’t thrown a pick in the playoffs, Peyton is back, one last swan song, all that BS but don’t believe it.
His TD passes were basically balloon lobs that the receivers were lucky to get under. He never did a good ball downfield. It was just one lob after another.
But those lobs were good enough to spot Denver a 17-9 halftime lead. I was feeling OK about the over but not great. Let's see....17+9 equals 26 times 2 is 52... yeah, I'm doing all right.
However, after there was only one FG in the third quarter my confidence was sinking fast. Mrs Doofus started chiming in. She was clever about it too. It was more of a needling rather than a full on taunting. I turned to Nick and said “I don’t mind losing a ½ quatloo but if she gets this right I’ll never hear the end of it”.
Denver opened up the fourth quarter with a FG to make it 20-12. I needed 2 TDs to get the over.
New England drives to the Denver 16 – 4th and 1. C;mon Pats get the first. Brady hits Edelman on a swing pass. It goes nowhere. Crap
After a Denver punt, New England drives again deep into Denver territory. Its 4th and 6 at the Denver 14 – 2:25 left. I’m thinking they should go for the FG. New England still had a timeout and the 2 minute warning. But Belichick decides to go for it and Brady, of course, misses. Two trips inside the twenty and no points.

Mrs Doofus managed another needle “That hurt”
It was now down to having to get a TD, a two point conversion (the Pats kicker had made 524 consecutive XP and then misses one in the first quarter – just my luck) and then a TD in OT.
“You’re always in it if you have the over!” I said. It was more of a hope and a prayer than a prediction at the point but you never know.
The Patriots force a punt and get the ball at midfield just inside the two minute warning. Brady finally start to look like the Hall of Famer that he is. With precision passing he gets a TD with 12 seconds left. Could it be? Get the 2 pointer and we are in OT baby. Chance to pull this one out!
Brady goes for Gronk for the XP but he was swarmed. Denver knew where it was going and had three guys around him. It gets picked off. Ball game.
Final score Denver 20 New England 12 LOSS
It was my first Mega Bet loss in the playoffs this year. But that is not what hurt. It was the knowing look I got from Mrs Doofus as we headed home.
Once we got home it was time for the Carolina Arizona game. No predictions were forth coming from the Mrs. She wanted cam to win and didn't care about the score.

Carolina -3.0 vs Arizona - Mrs Doofus got her wish and then some. It was a blow out from the start. And it answered the question - Is Carolina the team that jumed to a 31-0 halftime lead on Seattle or the one that let up 24 unanswered in the second half
It's the one thaat jumped to a 31-0 lead.
Carolina was up 17-0 before Arizona even knew what hit them.
And this time there weren't letting up. They kept the pressure on Carson Palmer all game, forcing him into six, count 'em, six turnovers. The Cardinals never had a chance.
Cam scored 4 TD, two by air and two by land. Ted Ginn exacted revenge on Arizona after letting him go at the end of last year. He had a 32 yard punt return which set up his dazzling 22 yard TD run. He also tackled Patrick Petersen after a pick to prevent a game changing TD.
Carolina was naming their score and finalized on 49-15 WIN
It was the most points scored in a NFC championship game.

And ( a little belatedly) a moment of silence for Glenn Frey. I know the Dude hated the Eagles but I loved them - still do.
Whenever I hear his songs I'm aking back to college and lots of good times.
So many good songs to choose from so how about this one - one of my all time favo
