Big Disappointment this week.
Mrs Doofus got me an early Chriistmas present at Costco. It was a one year subscription to Direct TV. It was going to be great. It had the NFL package so I could watch all the NFL games plus the Big Ten Network so I could watch all my Spartan games. And there it came with a gift card that would cover most of next years NFL package too
Not only that but she got 4 boxes so I could have 4 games on at once for the Doofus Deck parties. Man, I was really pumped.
But when the installer came out - it turns out I only had 40% reception from my house. To get better reception I would have to take down lots of huge trees in the back yard and probably several of my neighbors trees too. And while the thought of midnight lumberjacking crossed my mind I decided to pass. Rock, If some of your trees come down - It wasn't me.

It's only 2 weeks into preseason but one thing is becoming clear - the Lions are going to struggle this year. And it comes down to the secondary and Stafford. I know Calvin Johnson wasn't playing against the Browns in a bad 24-6 loss but Stafford continues to struggle with his mechanix. Next time you get a chance watch Matt Ryan versus Stafford. Ryan always has his shoulders (and head) facing the reciever and throwing off his front foot. Now watch Stafford - shoulders typically perpendicular to the WR and leaning backwards as he heaves it. Not always but way too often. Megatron makes Stafford better than he is. It should be the other way around.
Add to that that Brandon Weeden was carving up the Lions woeful secondary. So far, the Lions have played against two teams with horrific QBs (Jets in week 1). Imagine what Tom Brady is going to do next week.
If the Lions win less than 7 games ( a distinct possibility) they need to fire Schwartz and bring in a HC can that coach up Stafford while it is still possible. With Stafford signing a huge new long term contract - the Lions are stuck with him. If they don't get him playing at his potential it's going to be another 5 years of futilty - Calvin Johnson or no Calvin Johnson.
And speaking of New England and Atlanta in a way too early prediction (once again this based on watching only 2
weeks of preseason) - they are my two of my four teams in the NFL final four. The other two are in the NFC - the winner of the NFC West (I'll stick with San Francisco ) and in the AFC Denver.
Would make for a two great championhip games. A rematch of SF and Atlanta. And Brady versus Peyton one more time. Nice.

When the GO JUMBO executive committee meets to decide the next years Vegas weekend (with whatever brain cells are floating above the cigar infused alcohol swamp) there are certain minimum requirements.
First is that it is on a Spartan away game. There are enough season ticket holders in the gang that going on an MSU home game could endanger attendance. Imagine, wanting to go to a non smoking, alchohol free stadium in the rain with only one game to watch - versus watching 8-10 games all at once with free drinks in hand and cigars at the ready. Don't understand it but we schedule around it nonetheless.
My requirement is that we go in late October or early November so I can get a good feel for teams and make better picks. Turns out that my hunch is correct. Accordng to a nice artice in the Bettingtalks.com the casinos winning percentage drops considerably in October and November Vegas Winning Percentages. Since 2004. in September the books have a winning pecentage of 11.5% of the total amount wagered. In October it drops to 5.8% and then plummets further still to 2.8% in November. Theories as to why it drops vary but I am in the camp that the the sharps (with the Doofus tagging along) are able to hone in better on the games and start making their money.
An added bouns is that in October you not only have college football and the NFL but baseball playoffs (this year it's the World Series - Tigers vs Braves??), NHL, NBA and NASCAR. Plenty of action in the Sportsbook.
Remember - this years GO JUMBO weekend is Oct 26th at the LVH
